ELARA'S POV

"Shouldn't you be resting, you have been walking for hours now. Aren't you tired?" Cael asked, his voice laced with concern.

"Nah, I'm good."

It's been three hours since I started this walk. I found it hard to sleep yesterday night, especially after what I had witnessed. Yes, indeed I saw Silas with a suspicious person, but it felt too....would I say surreal? I couldn't believe it myself, talkless of telling another person, not even Cael.

"Elara!" Cael's voice cut through the silence. I stopped in my tracks, turning back to see him behind him, his breaths coming in ragged. He took a few long strides towards me, his face etched in worry.

"Is there something wrong?"

"No," I shook my head, shoulders slumping in defeat, "I'm sorry, let's go back to my chambers."

He pressed his lips into a thin line, almost as if he wanted to say something, but he decided to let it go.

"Alright."

We both walked back to my chambers, upon reaching I sighted Silas coming out from a room that was

Elara's POV"What's happening to me?"I stared at my arms in the bathroom mirror. The marks were spreading faster now. Getting bigger every hour. They looked exactly like the ones on Luna, the child we found last week. These glowing blue lines under my skin. They moved around like they were alive or something."Elara?" Kael knocked on the bathroom door. "You okay in there? You've been in there a while.""Yeah. Just getting dressed."I wasn't okay though. Not even close. But I couldn't tell him that. Not yet anyway. The marks started really small. Just a few thin lines on my wrist. I thought maybe they were just scratches at first. Now they covered half my arm. And they kept getting brighter every day.I pulled on a long-sleeved shirt. Made sure to pull it all the way down to cover everything. Maybe if I just ignored them, they'd go away on their own.But deep down inside I knew that wasn't gonna happen."Ready for breakfast?" Kael asked when I finally came out of the bathroom."Sure a

ELARA'S POV My wrist started burning while I fed the baby.It hurt where the first mark showed up. Hot and tingly. The feeling went up my arm. I tried to ignore it. I looked at my son's face instead. The burning got worse.I looked at my arm. The glowing marks were moving. They spread under my skin. New shapes formed while I watched. Swirls and lines that were not there before."What the hell?" I said quiet. The baby stopped eating. He looked at me. His eyes got brighter every day. He seemed smart. Too smart for a baby.I lifted my shirt. I checked my stomach. More marks were there. They glowed like the marks on my baby's skin.My heart beat fast. This was not normal. None of this was normal.I carried the baby to our bedroom. I put him on the bed. I went to the mirror. I looked at myself good. The marks covered my left arm. They were on my chest. My stomach. Some on my neck. They moved with my heartbeat. That was not the scary part. The scary part was they matched my son's marks exa

KAEL'S POV We walked deeper into Shadowfang territory. Everything felt wrong.Ronan walked next to me. His nose kept moving. He smelled what I smelled. Fear. Blood. Something else. Something that made my wolf want to run away."This is bad," Ronan said. He said it three times already."You said that.""Because it is still bad."I stopped. I looked at him. "You want to go back? Tell Elara we quit because we got scared?"Ronan's jaw got tight. "No.""Then be quiet and keep walking."We followed the scent trail for two hours. It led us into the heart of Shadowfang land. The trees were big here. Old. They blocked the sun. Everything felt cold and dead. The trail got stronger. More wolves came through here. Many more."Kael." Ronan grabbed my arm. "Listen."I stopped. I listened hard. There. Voices far away. Too far to hear words. But voices. Many wolves talking. We moved closer. We stayed low. We hid behind thick trees. The voices got clearer."We cannot wait much longer," someone said.

I'm standing in a place I don't know. The ground under my feet is cold and wet. The moon above me is wrong. It's red like blood and too big. Way too big. It takes up half the sky.Trees all around me but they ain't normal trees. They're twisted and bent like they're in pain. Their branches reach down like they wanna grab me.I try to move but my feet won't work right. Like I'm walking through mud that goes up to my knees."Where am I?" I say out loud.My voice sounds weird here. Like it's coming from far away. That's when I hear it. Breathing. Real deep and slow. Coming from everywhere and nowhere."You know where you are," a voice says.I spin around but don't see nobody. Just more twisted trees."Who's there?""You know who I am."The voice comes from the trees. Like the trees themselves are talking."I don't know nothing.""You know everything. You just don't want to see it."The breathing gets louder. Closer."What do you want?""To show you the truth."One of the trees moves. Be

I watch Kael pace around the camp like a crazy man. Back and forth. Back and forth. His eyes got that wild look again."We gotta find him," Kael says for the hundredth time today. "The Watcher's out there somewhere.""And doing what exactly?" I lean against a tree, arms crossed. "You been hunting this ghost for weeks.""He ain't no ghost. He's real.""Maybe. But Elara needs us here. The baby needs us here."Kael stops pacing and looks at me like I said something stupid. "You think I don't know that?""I think you forgot."His hands turn to fists. "Watch it, Ronan.""Or what?"We stare at each other. Two Alphas ready to fight. Been building up to this for days.Elara sits by the fire, holding the baby. She looks tired. Real tired. The kind that sleep don't fix."Both of you stop," she says quiet. We don't stop. We keep staring."The Watcher killed my pack," Kael says. His voice gets low and mean. "Killed my brother. You want me to just forget that?""Your pack's dead. Your brother's de

KAEL'S POVSomething was wrong this morning. The air felt heavy. The forest was too quiet. It felt like everything was waiting.I went to the spot where that thing in the cloak had been. I got on my knees and looked around. The dirt smelled bad. Like old metal and dead things. Not good dead things. Bad dead things."What the hell were you?" I said.I saw a black feather. I picked it up. It turned to dust right away. Great. Even the evidence was useless. My wolf was nervous inside my head. That thing wasn't alive, he said. Not really.I got up. I wiped my hands clean. The wind changed. It brought more of that metal smell from deeper in the woods. The thing was gone. But it left tracks I could follow.I'm good at tracking things. I smell them. I follow them. I catch them. That's what wolves do. But this was different. This was like trying to catch air.I walked into the woods. The trees felt too close together. Every shadow looked like it was hiding something. Every little noise made me
