LOGIN“Have you decided on what to do next?”
My jaw ticked and I relaxed the clenched muscle. I decided to ignore his question. “Why the midnight visit from Gage?”
“This family spilled a lot of blood to guarantee your generation the freedom you have now. There are no arranged marriages in your future, no official godfather seat up for grabs. To the public eye, we’ve gone legitimate and we’ve kept our noses clean ever since you were born.”
“I’m aware,” I said. I was raised knowing exactly who and what we were. I knew how we made money, the tactics we used and the connections we had. I doubted another family was as powerful as ours were. The Vittori’s, the Volkov’s and Makolli’s were ruthless, and none of us minded spilling blood, not even me.
“Your sister wants to expand her horizons and go to University,” Dominic said. It was said with a tinge of sadness. My twin had been stillborn and Honor had been a miracle after doctors told my mother she wouldn’t be able to conceive again. For that reason, we all doted on her.
A faint smile started on my lips. “And you want me to go with her to ensure her safety.”
“We still have enemies, Saint. Your sister is a prize people will kill for to use against us. I’ve also decided that this is a prime opportunity for you to spread your wings.”
“You mean, get more involved in the family business.”
Dominic nodded his head. “Yes, but you’ll do it where we have no reach, so essentially, you’ll be on your own. You’ll have to make your own connections, get a foothold in the area that you will then rule.”
“You’re giving me my own seat of power?”
Dominic smiled for the first time. “Yes, but don’t get too happy about it. It won’t be easy and I won’t be around the corner to help you. This is a chance for you to prove what you’re made of.”
“Who’s going with me?” I was close to my cousins, Niko and Elian, but they worked closely with their own fathers and I wanted to strike out on my own.
“You and Bishop have a golden opportunity and the time to strike is now.”
“What about Aaron?”
“Aaron’s only sixteen. He stays at home, close to his father.”
“Does he want to?”
Dominic grinned. “Not a fucking chance, but Ethan is his father and he said no. Something about you and Bishop being a bad influence.”
I barked out a rough laugh and shook my head. He wasn’t wrong. “Fuck, maybe Aaron’s better off here.”
“Honor and Arya will both join you.”
I almost choked on oxygen. “Arya? Gage agreed to that shit?”
“You know those two girls are more like twins than cousins. Now you will have a new level of incentive to succeed. Honor wants to go with you and where Honor goes, Arya goes. Gage didn’t have much of a choice. Anya convinced him.”
“How? With an axe to his balls?”
Gage’s dark laughter came from behind me. “She handcuffed me to the bed, fucked my brains out and then had me say yes while edging me. It was fucking torture. I had no choice.”
“She edged you?” Gage’s wife, Anya, was a Volkov by blood and a Vittori by marriage. She embraced Gage’s darkness with her own and in all that chaos, they found each other.
“The woman’s fucking talented,” Gage said with a smirk.
Dominic shook his head. “I don’t want to know that shit.”
“I bet Hudson does,” Gage said, and we all burst out laughing.
“Fuck off, go play with your cars or better yet, go edge your wife and grow some balls.”
“Fuck you,” Gage said, and opened the study’s door.
When the door closed behind him and we were alone again, I turned back to my father. “I’m sure you already have a destination in mind.”
“Honor, Arya, and Bishop will be attending Briarwood University in Pennsylvania. It’s exclusive, elite and just big enough to make your mark. There are a lot of smaller towns around Briarwood where your influence can reach. Lots of politicians with holiday homes.”
“Hmm, politics. It’s always good to have a few politicians in your back pocket,” I said, and got to my feet. “I won’t disappoint you, Father.”
“Wrath is barely an hour from where you’ll be. Call him if you need to, his crew is solid. Never be too proud to ask for help.”
I smiled. “That’s good. Wrath’s a good man to have on my side.” I could still remember the first time I met Wrath, staring at him through the back window of an SUV when I was 5. Wrath had killed the man and saved my life after I’d been kidnapped.
“Go get some rest. Your mother will be happy you’re home,” Dominic said.
“So … there’s no pregnant girl?”
Dominic raised an eyebrow. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
I chuckled and wiped a hand over my face. “Fucking Gage. He made me believe some girl came to the house, claiming to be pregnant. I told him it wasn’t mine, but fuck, for a minute there I was worried.”
“You know the rules, Saint, there can be no pregnant girlfriend. A pregnant wife on the other hand will ensure that I don’t have to decide on your punishment. We don’t father children out of wedlock and we don’t divorce. You might not have an arranged marriage looming over your head, but your future wife will be someone that brings something valuable to the table.”
“It’s not called an arranged marriage, but it will be one.”
“It’s not easy being a Vittori, but you have it easier than I had it,” Dominic said.
My father’s turbulent past with Conrad Vittori was no secret and I knew that in some aspects, I was very lucky. Dominic was hard on me, but he never abused me or hit me. My father guided me, showed me the error of my ways and sure, I had blood on my hands, but that was the Vittori way. My father had made sure that I could stand on my own two feet and lead this family if it ever came to that.
“Go sleep, Saint, I’ll see you in the morning.”
I nodded my head and headed up to my quarters, the one all the children shared. I slipped into my sister’s room first, and kissed her forehead. “I’m home, Honor.”
“I missed you,” she murmured.
“Me too.”
Inside my own room, I had to laugh. There was a little red heart-shaped chocolate on my pillow. I shook my head. That could only be Wilder. He was wild and untamed like his father, Hudson, but he had some of Cooper’s calm as well. I also knew that he’d only been home a week and he had one year left to finish his degree in Criminology.
The birth of my son was the absolute best day of my life. Hearing him cry for the very first time brought tears to my eyes, and when I held him, it was a moment of such pure love that I could feel it in my soul. He was my flesh and blood, the heir to the legacy I would leave behind. He would be untouchable. He was the most perfect thing I’d ever seen, and I felt blessed. My path to power had been filled with bloodshed, violence, and betrayal. I’d walk that path a thousand times over if it meant he would never have to. I’d suffer being shot over and over if it meant he would take over the family dynasty in peace. I knew it was wishful thinking. There would always be enemies, but I would slay as many of them as I could before he rose to take over.We flew to Dominic’s country estate for the baptism. It was important to me that he be baptized by Father Tomassino, in the same church I’d been baptized, and Dominic before me. It was a family tradition I didn’t want to let go of.The church
It took another four weeks before I was finally discharged. Kaelis took notes as the doctor gave instructions for exercises at home, check-up dates and what I could and couldn’t do. By the end of it, I wanted to bash his head in, push Kaelis to her knees and then go home. When we arrived at the house, I was surprised with a welcome home party. My parents had flown down, Honor and James and even Wrath with his most trusted circle were there. It was good to see everyone again and be surrounded by the people I loved.Arya now sported an engagement ring on her finger, and I glanced at Wilder. “You couldn’t tell me this in the hospital?”“I didn’t want to risk you getting all excited,” he said. “But the sex after I proposed was awesome.”Arya shook her head and kissed my cheek when I hugged her. “It’s good to have you back, cousin.”“Trust me, nobody’s as happy as I am.”My mother cried, and hugged me for a long time. I could almost relate to what she was feeling. Soon, I’d hold my own chi
After a week, I was transferred to a regular room, but my restlessness just grew. I wanted to be out there with my men, hunting down the man that gave the order to end my life. I knew it was Bryce, and Navo had found the evidence.“You need to rest, Mr. Vittori,” the nurse admonished me. It was 1 a.m. and I pulled the headphones off.“Just going to finish this movie, then I’ll rest, I promise,” I said. The movie was a live-feed of the men in a warehouse they tracked Bryce to. He’d hired mercenaries to protect him, especially after the fall of Carlos Suarez. I had watched a live feed of his execution. Diego had waited for me to regain consciousness before moving in. I guess I owed him one.“I’ll be back in 30 minutes,” she said.I ignored her and watched in rapt fascination as men scoured the warehouse, the beams from the lights on their rifles bouncing around in the darkness. I listened to bursts of gunfire, screams and my men stepping over dead bodies. It was a realistic version of a
The ICU room was dim. Machines were beeping softly in a steady rhythm. I didn’t remember the hiss of the ventilator; they’d extubated me earlier that morning when I started breathing over it. I drifted between dreams and pain. My chest felt heavy, every breath was a sharp reminder of the bullet that had almost ended me. The white ceiling came into focus again as I tried to open my eyes.At first, everything was quiet. All I could hear were the machines. All I could smell was that antiseptic odor that clung to all hospitals. Faintly, I heard the shuffle of nurses outside my room. Then I felt it. A hand wrapped around mine. Soft. Tender. A hand I knew so well. Kaelis. She was talking to Wilder, their voices soft, so as not to disturb me. Every now and then, her fingers would brush against my palm, making it tingle. It almost made up for the burning pain that was seared almost everywhere.“Okay, but when he wakes up, ask him why men like fishing,” Wilder said, a soft chuckle leaving his
Kaelis paced up and down. She couldn’t sit. The cup of take-away coffee Elias had brought her, had grown cold, and it still stood untouched on the table. There had been so much blood. She couldn’t get that image out of her head. She replayed that moment over and over in her head. Saint stepped in front of her. The hollow sound of that gunshot. Saint’s body jerked with the impact. Even shot, he’d pushed her into the car, not thinking about himself. The blood spread across his chest. She clenched her eyes shut. The waiting room was a blur of sterile white and harsh fluorescent light. She twisted her hands together, her knuckles pale. Every sound, the buzz of the vending machine, the shuffle of shoes on linoleum, scraped at her nerves. They’d been waiting for hours, but nobody left. They were all in the waiting room, waiting for news, hoping and praying that Saint made it through. They were all exhausted, and Hudson had tried a few times to take her home. She wouldn’t leave until she’d s
The double doors burst open, paramedics pushing Saint’s stretcher at full speed. The Emergency Department's lights were blinding, the air sharp with antiseptic and adrenaline.“Male, 23, GSW to the chest, hypotensive, tachycardic. He lost a lot of blood on the scene. His pressure’s tanking!” The paramedic’s voice was loud and filled with urgency as they barreled through.“Trauma bay 3!” a nurse called back.Doctors and nurses swarmed the stretcher as it slammed to a halt, and he was transferred to the hospital bed. Saint’s shirt was already cut away, his chest a mess of blood and gauze. The monitor screamed with erratic beeps.“BP 70 over palp. Pulse is 140 and thready.”“Get two large-bore IVs in, wide open fluids. Type and cross-match for blood. Call the OR, we’re going to need to crack him open.”Saint tried to move, his hand twitching by his side. His eyes fluttered, glassy and fighting against the pull of unconsciousness. His breaths were ragged and he opened his mouth, but the w
I stood in the empty hallway and glanced at my phone. Her next class wasn’t for another hour and I was done for the day. The doors were pushed open and I straightened to my full height. Kaelis was looking down as she placed her notebook in her bag, but a group of girls were looking at me. I hated t
The room was dark and it was nearing 3 a.m. The shower was shut off but he remained in the dark corner of the room, his frame blending in well with the shadows. He could see the appeal of it now as he waited. Adrenaline flooded his system, but he was oddly calm as well. The bathroom door opened an
He woke up the next morning, the cuffs lying next to his pillow. He clenched his jaw. Fucking Arya. His hand went to his groin and he could feel the dried blood beneath his balls. Just thinking about what she’d done had him stiffening again. He gripped himself tightly, closing his eyes. He could st
She couldn’t see him from where she was standing, a drink in her hand. She was surrounded by a group of girls and the entire fucking hockey team. It hadn’t taken him long to find her.
