The elevators at Hale Corporation HQ opened with a quiet hiss, and Nina stepped out, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor.

The lobby stretched wide in front of her, glass walls framed in steel. Sunlight streamed through the high windows, leaving the place looking almost too clean.

People moved with purpose. No one lingered. No one looked lost.

Nina slowed for half a second, taking it in.

Then she kept walking.

Victor was beside her, steady, like he had walked this path a thousand times and expected the world to move around him. People stepped aside without being told. Conversations dipped when he passed.

He didn’t acknowledge any of it.

Neither did she.

But she noticed everything.

They reached the private elevator at the far end of the lobby. No one else got in.

The doors closed behind them. Silence settled in.

Nina faced forward, watching their reflection in the mirrored walls. Her hair was pulled back neatly, every strand in place. Her dress was simple. Nothing loud. Nothing that could be picked apart.

Beside her, Victor adjusted his cuff without looking at her.

“You don’t have to prove anything,” he said.

Nina didn’t turn.

“They already think I don’t belong,” she replied. “That’s reason enough.”

Victor didn’t argue.

The elevator opened directly onto the executive floor.

The difference was immediate. The noise dropped. The atmosphere felt colder.

The hallway stretched ahead, lined with glass offices and closed doors. Assistants moved quickly, voices low, steps measured.

Clara was already waiting.

“You’re right on time,” she said.

Her eyes skimmed over Nina briefly. Not critical. Just… nothing.

“The board is inside.”

Nina nodded once.

Clara pushed the doors open.

The boardroom quieted not completely, but enough.

Enough for Nina to feel every pair of eyes turn toward her.

The room was long, with a polished table running through the center. Screens lined the walls. Floor-to-ceiling glass framed the city outside.

People were already seated.

Different faces. Different ages. Same kind of presence.

They watched her the way people watched something new.

Carefully.

Victor walked in without breaking stride. Nina followed.

At the far end sat a woman in black.

Still.

Straight-backed.

Her eyes rested on Nina and stayed there.

Helena Hale.

She didn’t speak. Didn’t move. She just watched.

A side door opened, and another woman stepped in.

No rush. No hesitation, like she already belonged there.

She took in the room once… then paused at Nina.

A faint smile tugged at her lips. It didn’t reach her eyes.

Nina met it briefly then looked away.

Victor’s voice cut through the room.

“Good morning.”

Everything felt more structured this time.

“Everyone, this is Nina Hale.”

The pause that followed felt heavier than it should have.

Some nodded. Some didn’t.

A man near the center leaned back slightly, studying her.

“Mrs. Hale,” he said. “We weren’t expecting… such a quick introduction.”

Nina met his eyes.

“I wasn’t expecting the marriage either,” she replied.

A few people shifted, but Victor didn’t react.

They took their seats, and Nina sat beside him. No one questioned it. That said enough.

A VP stood near the screen, tablet in hand.

“Let’s get started.”

Numbers filled the screen, rows of revenue figures, clean growth curves, projections stacked neatly.

He spoke through it without pause, steady, practiced.

Nina didn’t interrupt. She just listened, eyes moving between the screen and the report in front of her.

Something didn’t sit right.

Not obvious. But there.

She flipped through a page. Then another.

The numbers lined up too neatly.

“…and as you can see, we’ve maintained consistent growth across all sectors.”

Nina stayed still.

Too consistent.

Her fingers rested on the edge of the page.

The VP paused. “Any questions?”

No one spoke.

That was when Nina did.

“These numbers don’t match.”

Her voice was quiet. It didn’t need to be louder.

The room stilled.

The VP looked at her. “I’m sorry?”

Nina didn’t repeat herself.

She turned the document slightly.

“The last three quarters,” she said. “The reported revenues don’t align with what’s presented here.”

A brief pause, then a tight smile.

“All figures have been verified.”

Nina nodded once. “Then they should match.”

Nina leaned forward slightly.

“Your growth is consistent across all divisions,” she said. “That’s unlikely.”

“It reflects stability,” the VP replied.

“It reflects adjustment,” Nina said.

A few heads turned.

The VP’s expression tightened.

“Adjustments were made to optimize.”

“Show them.”

The words landed clean.

Victor spoke without looking away from the screen.

“Pull up the breakdown.”

The VP hesitated.

“Now.”

The screen changed.

More numbers appeared, rougher this time.

Nina’s focus sharpened.

“There,” she said.

A line buried in the report.

“Open it.”

The VP didn’t move.

Victor didn’t repeat himself.

That was enough.

The numbers spread across the screen, and the room shifted.

Subtle. But undeniable.

The pattern revealed itself once you knew where to look: small adjustments repeated across divisions, careful enough to pass but not careful enough to disappear.

Nina leaned back again, calm.

Like she hadn’t just pulled the thread loose.

The VP cleared his throat.

“This can be explained.”

“I’m sure it can,” Victor said. “After the meeting.”

That ended it.

The presentation continued, but the room had changed.

People weren’t just listening anymore.

They were watching her.

Helena hadn’t looked away. Not once.

Not when Nina spoke.

Not when the numbers shifted.

Her expression didn’t change.

But something in her focus had.

Across the table, the other woman rested her chin lightly against her hand, watching Nina with quiet interest.

Still smiling. Slightly.

By the time the meeting wrapped, no one rushed out.

Chairs scraped softly. Voices dropped. Conversations broke into quiet clusters.

Nina closed the file in front of her.

Victor stepped in beside her just as her pulse slowed, her hands steady again.

“You handled that.”

Nina looked at him. “I told you I would.”

He lingered a second too long.

Then nodded once.

People began to leave.

“Impressive,” one man said.

Nina inclined her head.

Another woman paused.

“We’ll be reviewing those numbers further.”

“I’d recommend it,” Nina replied.

Soon, only a few people remained.

Helena stood.

The room quieted again; no one needed to say anything.

She walked toward Nina.

Each step is measured. No rush. No hesitation.

She stopped in front of her.

Up close, her presence felt heavier. Sharper.

“You noticed quickly,” Helena said, her voice calm, almost too flat.

Nina didn’t look away.

“It wasn’t hidden well enough.”

A pause.

Helena studied her.

Then gave a slight nod.

No approval. Not quite.

But close.

She turned and walked away.

Nina exhaled slowly.

She hadn’t realized she’d been holding her breath.

“Careful,” a voice said lightly.

Nina turned.

The other woman stood closer now.

Up close, she looked even more put together.

Almost unnaturally so.

“You’re making an impression,” she said.

Nina didn’t respond immediately.

“That’s the point.”

A small smile.

“Is it?”

They held each other’s gaze for a second.

Then the woman glanced past her at Victor.

For a second, her expression slipped.

The doors opened again.

This time, security stepped in.

Quick. Intentional.

Maybe a little too intentional.

They moved straight toward Victor.

One of them leaned in, speaking low.

Nina watched Victor closely.

His expression shifted barely.

His jaw tightened.

“What is it?” she asked.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the glass.

Nina followed.

Outside the boardroom, just beyond the glass wall

Someone stood there.

Not staff. Not security.

Just… watching.

Nina frowned.

She didn’t recognize him.

But something about the way he stood

still… waiting

didn’t feel right.

Victor took her hand.

This time, he didn’t let go.

His grip was firm.

“Stay here,” he said quietly.

Nina didn’t move.

Didn’t look away.

Because the man outside the glass

was already looking straight at her.

Nina woke and stared at the ceiling for a moment. It was definitely not hers. The room was too quiet. Bigger than any bedroom she had ever slept in.Then she remembered. The courthouse. The signatures. Victor Hale. Her husband. Her heart skipped a beat, and she pushed herself upright. The sheets slipped down her arms, revealing the bed beneath her. It was enormous, soft but supportive, sinking just slightly under her weight. Nothing like the sagging mattress she had dragged herself out of at her apartment. This wasn’t her apartment. This wasn’t her life. She swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Her bare feet touched cool marble. Smooth. Clean. Polished. Every step reminded her she didn’t belong here yet.The entire wall opposite the bed was glass, stretching floor to ceiling. Beyond it, the city sprawled endlessly, rows of buildings fading into the morning light. The streets below looked distant and small, like a world that suddenly felt far away.Nina’s reflection caught her atte

Nina grabbed a broken table leg from the floor, wasn't exactly a weapon but better than nothing, and slowly approached the door."Who is it?" He voice came out steadier than she felt. "Victor Hale." The voice was deep, controlled and completely unfamiliar. "I'm here about Thomas Ashton and the rather unfortunate situation you've found yourself in."Nina's grip tightened on the table leg. "I don't know anyone named Victor Hale.""But I know you, Ms. Grant. And I know what you found in those financial records." A pause. "I also know that the people who killed Thomas are coming for you next. So you can either open this door and let me help you, or you can wait for them to finish the job. Your choice."The words hit like ice water. Killed Thomas. So it wasn't an accident but murder."How do I know you're not one of them?" Nina pressed her back against the wall, still gripping her makeshift weapon."If I wanted you dead, Ms. Grant, you already would be. I'm here because Thomas was my frie
