Lyra strode into my office to the edge of my desk, her eyes locked on me and judging from the triumphant smile on her face, I could tell she had come in with good news.
“Is it done?" I asked, my voice low and urgent. Lyra's smirk grew, her eyes glinting with pride as she nodded. "It's done." The words hung in the air and I felt the weight of anticipation lift from my shoulders like a burden had been lifted. I rose from my chair to my full height as I processed the news. The long, tense night of waiting was finally over. I felt a rush of relief and exhilaration course through me. Lyra leaned against the doorframe, her posture relaxed. “Honestly, it’s kind of embarrassing how easy it was to kidnap Alpha Cameron’s little sister from right underneath his nose.” She snickered. My gaze narrowed, my thoughts snapping to the potential consequences of this action. “Did we suffer any losses?" I asked, my concern for the pack's safety overriding my momentary triumph. Lyra's expression remained smug, her tone reassuring. "None. Your plan went just as it was supposed to. Our little spy did great. And Alpha Cameron remains blissfully unaware of his sister's... absence. Pathetic.” She scoffed, her disgust for our enemies more than evident. I wanted to feel calm but I clenched and unclenched my fists, tension coursing through my body. “Secure the borders. The minute he realises she’s gone, he’ll be here trying to break down our walls.” My mind was racing. I wanted to bask in this victory but I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd just rolled the dice on our pack's safety. Had this been too much of a risk? I thought about how much danger I was putting my pack members in by pulling such a stunt. It was a gamble but it was necessary one needed to end this war that had lasted way too long. "Where is she?" I demanded, my gaze snapping back to Lyra. “In the dungeon," she replied. "I had to practically post guards to keep everyone off her. Everyone’s dying at the chance to take a bite out of her – Diamanté blood and all that comes with it. Everyone wants to get their hands on her, payback for all they’ve done to our pack.” Lyra's words dripped with venom, her bitterness evident. "But don’t worry, I told them that if anyone gets to have a go at her first, it’s you." I stood up, a bitter taste filling my mouth as I thought about our ugly history with the Eclipse pack. The memories of the destruction and chaos they had unleashed upon my pack haunted my mind. My resolve hardened. Alpha Cameron and his entire bloodline will regret ever having crossed paths with my own. "I'll make sure that pathetic Alpha Cameron is at my feet, begging for his sister's life when I'm done with her.” I snarled, my voice low and menacing as I strode past Lyra. Her smirk didn't go unnoticed, and I could sense her approval of my plan. My boots echoed through the halls as I made my way to the dungeons, my determination for revenge growing with each step. I knew I couldn’t let myself celebrate this victory just yet. I knew the significance of this move and how much of a crucial turning point it would bring in our war against the Eclipse pack. I had to capitalize on it. I needed to exercise patient until everything was done and set in stone. The two soldiers at the entrance of the dungeons bowed at me and opened the main cell door as I walked past them. I could hear Lyra trailing behind me. “I’ll organise a meeting with the elders to decide what our strategy with Alpha Cameron will be. Now that we have his little sister, everything has changed. But until then… if you want to make her scream a little, I’ll be happy to look the other way.” Lyra spoke, tucking some of her dark short hair away. Trust me, I wanted nothing more than to make the Diamanté family pay. But I knew she wouldn’t survive the night if I acted now. “I just want to see her for now.” I spoke not hiding the bitterness in my voice. Seeing Alpha Cameron’s little sister locked up. Knowing I had the upper hand and the control would be more than gratifying for now. Lyra nodded. She walked past me and led me to one of the cells in the back. I suddenly felt something stir in me as we got closer. I placed a hand to my chest not knowing what this searing feeling was. Not pain, something uncomfortable but not pleasant. Something demanding to be felt. I felt my wolf stir within me. Mine. The voice came from within. Something magnetic was pulling me, drawing me in and I realised it was coming from the cell. “Thane?” I heard Lyra call my name in concern. “Are you okay?” Her voice was distant, but I wasn’t focused on it at the moment. I walked past her feeling like I was in a trance. I stopped in front of the cell and everything clicked into place. I saw a girl. She was hugging herself shaking in fright and the unsettling feeling intensified. But it’s only when she looked up at me, her green eyes piercing mine that I was really knocked off my feet. Something moved through me and the next thing I knew my legs buckled beneath me, and I found myself crouched on one knee, my head spinning. The girl’s eyes widened at me shocked and alarmed. “Thane!“ Lyra yelled my name, her voice piercing through and I felt her hand on my shoulder. “Thane, what’s wrong?” I looked up at the girl, all my walls and defences crumbling. My essence laid bare. “Mine.” I growled out loud this time, the sound low and menacing, as my wolf surged to the forefront, refusing to be contained. Lyra backed away from me startled. Finally the primal energy left my body and I felt myself crumple onto the floor, nothing but my arms straining to hold me up My gaze locked onto the girl's, and a single, consuming thought dominated my mind; she was mine. The realization hit me like a tidal wave, and I swallowed hard, my throat constricting with the force of my emotions. Crap. One year later. Time will always make a full of us. That is something my parents always taught me. And now, I was seeing it myself. I looked around the castle. Once upon a time it had felt like my birth right. It had felt so obvious that I would one day end up here but now here I was and suddenly it all felt so different. "Hey Thane!" Landon came rushing over to me. He had a book tucked into his armpit. A huge smile spread across his face. "That was probably the most epic meeting you have ever run." I gave him a small smile and nodded at the book. "Is everything set?" I asked. He nodded and patted it before holding it up. "Here lie the new laws of the kingdom. None of us will ever be separate again and no one will ever leave another pack to fend for themselves. It's genius." He beamed. I smiled. No, it was necessary. "And the education of the packs on Dark ones?" I inquired. "We're gonna get right on that in the coming weeks." Landon nodded firmly at me. "Everyone will kn
I straightened my back. Fear coursed through my veins but I tried not to show it. I glared at Queen Luna Evangeline and narrowed my eyes.“I don’t care what you threaten me with. I will never work for you.”The queen’s smile was thin and wicked. “Oh, you will," she spoke casually as she stepped forward. "Especially if you want that darling boy to walk out of here alive. What was his name again? Matteo?"As if on cue I heard a scream of panic in the distance. "Piper! Help me! Help me Piper."I started breathing heavily. "Matteo! No! Hang in there Matty! Hang in there."I turned to the Queen, my eyes narrowing.“Don’t you dare lay a hand on him."She laughed. "I already told you, dear, that is completely up to you.I looked at the helpless woman on the floor.I let out a sigh. To think, I had just escaped being a prisoner myself. But if this would keep Matteo safe, I had to take the deal. I had no choice.I looked at the queen and narrowed my eyes."Fine. I will..."Suddenly I jumped w
The castle was quiet. But it was only the kind of quiet that existed because everyone else was asleep and the guards were bored. I moved like a shadow along the stone corridor, making sure my boots were silent on the stone floor. Jaimie was right behind me with a knife held low and poised in his right hands. His eyes kept darting around checking every corner and crease just like mine were We had come over the wall, cut the rope line for the outer patrol, and let the servants’ entrance do the rest. No grand or dramatic entrance. No shouting. Just us two slipping through the borders expertly the way we knew how. I knew the palace well enough to know exactly where the King’s chambers were at the end of the west wing. And I knew for a fact, two guards were outside the door guarding it. Not a problem at all for Jaimie and I. A few minutes later, the two guards lay on the breathing but not waking up. Jaimie and I swiftly pushed them off to the side before we let ourselves in. I gav
The stone bit into my back as I slowly started to regain consciousness. I looked around and felt my head pounding. I looked around at my strange surroundings but it was all so dingy and dark. I felt around the ground and all that I felt was hard, damp ground. I couldn't hear anything exceptional the drip of water somewhere far off. Then suddenly, everything that had happened started coming back and I remembered. The cabin. The men who had attacked Matteo and I. Matteo! I forced her eyes open trying to look around and feel around the darkness. But my hands were bound by chains so I was just pulled back and hit my back hard against the wall. My wrists ached where the chains were tightly bound. “Matteo!" I screamed in panic. "Matty!" Please, God, let him be okay. "Piper." His voice was small, right beside me. I turned my head. He was sitting against the wall next to me. I focused with my werewolf sight. His knees were pulled up to his chest. His arms wrapped around them. I f
The second we approached the cabin, a deep dread ran through me. I stood scarily still staring at the destruction of the cabin. I stepped over the threshold and stilled. The door hung off one hinge. The coffee table was overturned, legs splintered. I sucked in a breath as I kept walking. Glass crunched underneath my boots. Forgetting all the wreckage, one thing stood out. It was empty. I didn't bother calling out Piper's name. It was no point. She wasn't here and I knew it. My hands curled into fists at my sides. I felt like I couldn't move, couldn't breathe. Everything in me went cold and numb. I should have freaking known. I should have known that fire was just a decoy. Maybe I would have gotten here on time. Maybe I wouldn't have been took late. Jaimie came rushing in after me. I saw him still as he looked around at the wreckage as well. He was seeing all the same things I was He walked slowly ahead and I saw him crouch down and pick somet
My dream was sweet. It felt almost melodious. I was in my room back home, in my arms, wrapped tightly in a little blanket was a dimpled little girl with deep colly hair and bright green eyes.Behind me, I felt a hand on my shoulder.I turned and saw Cameron smiling down at me. He looked down at my daughter lovingly then back at me."She looks so much like me. Thane must be livid." He spoke proudly.I rolled my eyes and was about to respond when I felt myself being shaken awake.“Piper! Piper,! Wake up!” I groaned as my eyes fluttered open. I saw Matteo in front of me.His little face was pale and he was breathing heavily like he’d just been running a marathon.I sat up instantly, every trace of sleep in me gone. “Matteo? What are you doing here?"He was supposed to be at his parents house. How had he made his way all the way here.I saw him shiver.“I had a dream." He spoke shakily.I was immediately attentive knowing what that could mean. "They're coming and I didn’t want you to b
Time seemed to have stood still.I felt like my head would explode and I saw black spots everywhere I looked.I felt shards of glass poking through my skin and I’m pretty sure I saw smoke. And was that… gas?The air was heavy with the smell of burnt metal. At first I couldn’t really make out anythi
But it wasn’t Landon. Not exactly. This version was rabid, crazed, uncontrollable.I could see it by the way he instantly started ripping through the dark ones.It was bizzare to watch. I had seen Thane and his soldiers fight. Heck, I had seen my own sibling and pack army fight.A skilled fighter w
“Everyone expand our defences as much as we can, I want soldiers on every ends of the woods. We fight fiercely and defend the innocent - the women and children especially. Go for the kill and hunt in packs. The dark ones do not show mercy and neither should we.” I ordered as I marched down the stai
Everyone was mad at this point. Landon was mad at me, Lyra was mad at me and all the other soldiers could tell their alpha was mad and it didn’t take long for them to realise I was the reason so here we were.Thane hadn’t given me a second glance as he had immediately shifted and gone to join the f
