My boots hit the wooden floor but the first thing I noticed was that it was empty. I could hear the others gaining on me behind me. A strong scent immediately hit me. Blood. Piper's blood. And something else. Something that smelled like deatg. “Piper!” The voice came shakily from the corner of the shed. It's only then I saw the small figure crouched down in the corner. Matteo. Jaimie and Celeste rushed in behind me. "Matteo!" I saw them run towards him.Celeste was the first one to grab her son, immediately pulling him to her chest. Jaimie right behind them. I looked around as if Piper would appear too. I wanted to curse. I wanted to scream and break everything around me. Instead I calmly walked over to them. Celeste was frantically asking Matteo if he was okay. If anything had happened
The shed was filled with the scent of dust and mold. I held Matteo tight in my arms and every time the walls shuddered, I just held him closer. I pressed my back harder against the door, biting back the scream on the verge of my throat. I tried to ignore the pain in my ankle but it was becoming unbearable. The metallic scent of my own blood disturbing. Matteo was shuddering in my arms. He wasn’t crying anymore which felt much, much worse. I heard his swallowed hard as the shed rocked again from the force of the dark ones trying to break in. The next thud made my heart skip a beat as some wood gave way. Claws raked down the outside wall. The wooden bar we had improvised and set against the door shook. It wouldn’t hold much longer and I knew that. “Piper?” Matteo whispered. His voice was tiny. “This isn't how it ends." I furrowed my brows disturbed by the certainty in Matteo's voice. How could he be so sure? Was it something he had seen in his dreams as well? “No it isn't." I
I wasn't prepared for the chaos I found when I walked into the manor.Everyone was frantically moving around. No one even paid attention to Jaimie's and my arrival.I immediately knew something was wrong.I marched up to the desk in the centre of the room.I found Celeste screaming at a bunch of soldiers."Well I don't care! Find them! Find them now!""Babe." Jaimie called out to her.She turned and looked relieved when she saw his face."Jaimie." She spoke in relief rushing to wrap her arms around him.He studied her face in confusion.Landon rushed into the room and I saw the panic in his eyes when he stopped next to me."Well?" Celeste asked him."We've searched the entire woods. They are not on the premises." He responded."Who isn't on the premises? What's going on?" I demanded.Celeste looked like she was about to burst into tears.Jaimie held her. "It's okay, honey, what's going on?"Celeste's eyes shone with tears."It's Piper and Matteo. They're missing."***My shoes pounded
The trip back home seemed longer than usual. Even though it was a successful mission, something felt off. I turned and looked at Jaimie. Lyra and the others had broken free of us the minute we got back to set other aspects of our plan in place. So it was just me and him. The walk back was silent and for some reason the gravel road made it seem much longer. I looked up at the sky. It was Twilight and the sun was setting sharing purplish, pinkish hues around. It wouldn't be long now. Jaimie walked with his hands in his pockets. I couldn't help but stare at the scars on this arm. I definitely hadn't noticed them before. I wondered how he had gotten them. If it was by years of fighting Dark ones or another way. I still couldn't believe my brother had a whole life without me that I couldn't even dream of being a part of. “You’re quiet,” Jaimie finally spoke breaking the heavy silence. "You know, when you were younger, I would have paid a million dollars to have you shut up." He
The temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. I held on tighter to Matteo and looked around. The trees cast scary shadows around that seemed even more intimidating now. Something moved at the far side of the clearing and I gasped, squeezing Matteo. Not a person. Too fast to be a person. Too many legs. I heard the growl again. Two then three more. My heart was thudding in my chest. Then the bright red eyes appeared. "Run!" I screamed at Matteo as I pulled his hand and started for the trees. Branches whipped past us like claws. I didn’t dare look back but I could definitely hear the dark ones crashing through with every second they gained getting too close. Their growls filled the air and in the distance and looked up and saw the sun begin to set. Dammit. Soon it would be gone completely and their strength would be at maximum. I needed to get myself and Matteo to safety long before that. “Faster, Matty!” she yelled, my hand was locked around his, trying to get his short littl
I didn't let the screen door slam behind me as I carefully eased it shut, my thumb was on the latch to make sure it didn't make any noise. I pulled my hoodie sleeves over my hands as I stepped outside. For a second, I just stood on the porch and forced my heart to calm down. The porch light seemed brighter than usual but deep down, I knew that was just my anxiety. I didn't even know why the porch light was on so early. The sun had barely gone down. No one had noticed me slip out with all the meetings and plans still going on inside. I started heading away banking on everyone being distracted to not notice. My mind couldn't help but go back to my first time trying to escape the manor. I remember being so desperate to get away I didn't even know where had been going. I guess that much had changed. The woods started where the yard gave up with about twenty feet of dead grass, then a darkness. No path. Just trees and the bushes. I felt like the air kept changing as I crossed the f
“Are you sure no one is following us?” I whispered to Landon. He turned off the keys in the ignition, dimming the lights of Thane’s car which was now parked to the side of the road.He looked around cautiously before settling into his seat.“Don’t worry. No one is really ever lurking around at nigh
You can’t run away from your problems. That’s a well known fact. But it doesn’t mean I can’t try.The wind rushed through me and I felt like I was zipping through time itself. Sometimes I thought that if I deluded myself into believing I could just escape everything, it would somehow become true.
I’ve never had a problem with searching for Cameron in my dreams. I just kind of always felt him…Heck, there was once a time I wanted the complete opposite.Being a teenager and having your big brother constantly in your head was the opposite of ideal. But now? I would kill to have my brother read
Randall didn’t stand down. He walked out from where he had been standing to position himself in the aisle so that he could stare straight at me.“You heard me.” He spoke. “Why should we take her word for it? Why shouldn’t we believe the king who has kept us safe all these years? The king who you -
