LOGINChapter two
“ You look beautiful” Audrey, my designer exclaimed looking at the dress I had on which she made with awe. But I didn't feel like it. My makeup was perfect, almost hiding the sadness. I didn't cry,I couldn't bring myself to. It would only make me feel weak. The humiliation from my father burned hotter than the heart break. I had woken up to three missed calls from Elio but I couldn't bring myself to speak to him. “ Move to the full size mirror so you can get a good view” Audrey said again. She had been talking but I was tuned out. I walked robotically to the front of the mirror. The dress was ivory silk. It was simple, but it fits like a glove. The silk fabric traced my shape without clinging too tightly, flowing gracefully and spreading at my feet. They were no accessories, the dress alone was enough. One shoulder was left bare, the other wrapped loosely in a halter connected to the dress that crossed over my chest and fastened around her neck and fell at my back. The back dipped low, forming a V that revealed the curve of my spine before the dress gathered and flowed at my feet. It wasn’t a dramatic gown. It was just perfect. I hated that I had to waste it on cheating Elio. I took one last glance at myself before slipping into my comfort heels. Not like they were going to be visible anyway. The place, which was a hotel rooftop Elio had chosen was almost filled when I got there. Chatter and giggles influenced by the continuous supply of champagne filled the air. The stares I got when I steped in made the hair in my back sensitive. I got congratulations and well wishes from way too many people than I could when they had finished examining my attire. That was the thing with rich circles that tired me out. They would always examine people when they walked into an event to see if you belong and it gets worse if you are the host. I looked around trying to find Elio but I couldn't, I gave and got into meaningless conversations about fashion and what not with gues I was familiar with. The glass clicking got everyone's attention next. It was Elio at the middle. “ Good evening everyone, thanks for taking our time from your busy schedule to honor this invitation. This party was held to to announce my engagement to my beautiful fiancee.” He said smiling while everyone stared clapping. He hadn't seen me. I'm sure he just believed I was somewhere around. The fact he didn't bother searching for me before his speech leaves a sour taste in my mouth. “ I'll call my lovely fiancee for a toast and we can all enjoy our evening” Elio paused again obviously trying to be dramatic or search for me in the crowd. Either way I subtlety arranged my dress to address the crowd. “ Ladies and gentlemen my fiancee, Sheila Moretti.” He finished pointing at someone that was definitely not me. Murmurs broke out in the crowd while some people still clapped. My step sister stood beside him and placed a quick kiss on his lips while he slid his hands to her comfortably. I stood there stunned. I didn't hear the next words they said before everyone lifted their glasses for the toast. “ To love and foreve” my sister raised her glass and everyone repeated after her and started drinking. My eyes found my father's but he looked away immediately. I could feel the humiliating stares I was getting. My fight flight instinct kicked in but I chose the latter. I was out of there immediately. The elevator wasn't working, I took off my heels and started on the stairs trying to call a cab immediately when I bumped into someone. “ I'm so sorry” I immediately started apologizing. But before I could stop myself I tripped on my own dress and went tumbling down the stairs. The day just kept getting worse. When I had stopped tumbling, I felt something warm trickle down the side of my head. I looked up before the darkness swallowed me and saw a man or a giant Walking down, towards me. I blacked out before I could properly see his features.Chapter thirty seven Jade’s POVI woke up aware of him.Not just that he was there. But the way he was there. His arm was still around me.Heavy and warm.Possessive in a way that didn’t feel forced. My back pressed lightly against his chest, his breath slow and steady against my neck. For a moment,I didn’t move.Because this…….this felt real. And that was the problem.I swallowed slowly, my fingers tightening slightly against the sheets as my thoughts caught up with me.Adam.The name hit me all over again.Sharp and unanswered. And just like that,The warmth behind me didn’t feel as comforting anymore.Carefully, slowly,I lifted his arm.It didn’t move easily. His grip tightened slightly, almost instinctively, like even in sleep he noticed. My breath caught. Then,A low, rough voice.“Where are you going?”I froze.“You’re awake?”His arm didn’t leave me.Didn’t loosen. If anything,It settled more firmly around my waist.“I wasn't,” he said quietly. “Until you started escaping.”
Chapter thirty six Killian ’s POVI knew she heard.I didn’t need to see her.Didn’t need to step into the hallway or check the shadows to confirm it.I just knew.Because the moment Caleb said his name,The air shifted. His name always did something to me, I could also see the regret in Caleb's eyes. Jade wasn’t careless. She didn’t linger where she wasn’t supposed to.But she listened, observed and noticed. And tonight,She heard something she wasn’t meant to.“Not yet,” I had said. And I meant it.Because the moment she found out about Adam,Everything would change. She would see me differently and I didn't want that. Not yet. Caleb leaned back against the chair, watching me with that familiar look. The one that said he wasn’t going to let this go.“You’re delaying the inevitable,” he said calmly.“I’m managing timing.”“You’re avoiding it.”I exhaled slowly.“I’m choosing when she finds out.”Caleb scoffed lightly.“You really think you’ll control that?”“Yes.”Because I had c
Chapter thirty five Jade’s POVThe house felt different tonight. Not quiet like before.Just full.Occupied.Alive in a way it hadn’t been when it was only Killian and me pretending we understood what this arrangement was supposed to be.Now Aurelia was here. Her small shoes near the staircase. Her voice echoing from somewhere down the hall. Her presence filling the space with something warm and unfamiliar.I had just finished setting the plates on the kitchen island when I heard small footsteps running toward me.“Mama!”I looked up just in time to catch Aurelia hugging my waist.I still wasn’t used to it.That word.Every time she said it, something inside me shifted slightly.Something soft.Something dangerous.I remember how she ran to hug me when Killian and I had returned from work together. He said I was always welcome to the office until I was ready to do me. “Slow down,” I said gently, brushing her hair back.“Daddy said Uncle Caleb is coming.”“Did he?”She nodded seriou
Chapter thirty four Jade’s POVThe word still echoed in my head.Mama.I stared at my reflection in the mirror, fingers brushing lightly over my face like I was trying to recognize the person looking back at me.Nothing had changed and yet,Everything felt different.“Jade?”His voice came from behind me.Low.Careful.I met his gaze through the mirror.Killian stood by the door, his expression unreadable as always, but there was something else there tonight.Something quieter.Less guarded.“She’s asleep,” he said.I nodded slowly.“Okay.”Silence stretched between us.Not awkward.Just, I don't, full?“You didn’t have to say yes.”My eyes flickered to his.“I know.”“Then why did you?”I hesitated.Because I didn’t have a simple answer.“She looked like she needed it,” I said finally. His gaze didn’t leave mine.“She has me.”“And?” I asked softly. “Is that always enough?”That question did something.I saw it.The slight shift. The way his jaw tightened just a little. But he didn’
Chapter thirty threeJade’s POVI didn’t expect to be nervous. It wasn’t like this was new.I had already met Aurelia.Spent time with her.Laughed with her.But this felt… different.Maybe it was because she was moving in and not visiting. Not temporary.Permanent.Or maybe it was because of what that meant. For Killian .For me.For whatever this was supposed to be.The car ride was quiet. Not uncomfortable.Just quiet. Killian drove, one hand steady on the wheel, the other resting loosely near the gear.Calm.Composed.Like always.I glanced at him once. Then quickly looked away.“You’re overthinking.”I blinked.“Do you ever get tired of saying that?”“No.”I huffed softly.“Good to know.”He paused Then,“She already likes you.”I turned slightly.“What?”“Aurelia,” he said simply. “She likes you.”My chest tightened.“That doesn’t mean,”“I know what it means,” he cut in calmly. And somehow,That didn’t make it better. We pulled into the driveway of his mother’s house shortly
Chapter thirty two Jade’s POVI didn’t realize how bored I was until the silence started getting to me again. It had only been a day.One day in that house without anything to do, nowhere to go, no one to talk to and I already felt like I was losing my mind.I needed to get back to work. I was sprawled across the couch, flipping through channels I wasn’t even watching when my phone rang.Killian .My heart did that annoying little thing again.I picked up on the second ring.“Hello?”“You sound bored.”I sat up immediately.“I am not bored.”“You are.”I frowned.“You don’t know that.”“I do.”Something about the certainty in his voice made me roll my eyes, even though a small part of me was….relieved.“I was going to suggest you come by the office,” he continued. “Or pick up Aurelia. She’s supposed to move in today.”My expression softened slightly at her name. But then….“I’ll come to the office,” I said quickly.A small pause.“You’re sure?”“Yes,” I replied, standing already. “W
