Chapter 12

Elara's Pov

My phone lit up the second I slid into the back seat. A call from Eliza. A smile lit up my face.

“You did so well, Luna.” Her voice cracked with pride even through the speaker. “I watched the live feed from the pharmacy.”

“The pack members were amazed. You're trending Luna. The way you stepped in, Seris’ face was frozen. You should check it out on the Alpha's blog.”

"The crowd ate up every word you said about the medicines? I’m so proud of you I could cry.”

I’m so proud of you I could cry.” "You looked like a real Luna tonight. You truly belong up there with him.” For a heartbeat I let myself feel it. I dared to let myself imagine it. A small smile appeared on my face. My hand instinctively went to my stomach under the seatbelt. “We did good, little one.”Then I heard Cassian’s voice right outside the window, cold and final.“Elara, come down. Seris doesn’t want to ride with you. You know she's been through hell. He didn’t even look at me. Seris was already in the passenger seat of his b

Chapter 11Elara’s PovThe pharmacy was already crowded when we arrived. Voices overlapped, heavy with excitement. With the election approaching, every candidate was trying to outdo the other.I stepped out beside Cassian, my hand resting lightly in his. His grip tightened for a brief second.“Stay close,” he murmured. “And smile.” He looked away. Everything in me wanted to pull away from his grip, but I couldn't. That would break our agreement. I flashed a small smile to the people and waved at them as the perfect Luna. The sign above the building gleamed under the daylight.SERIS.This was the largest pharmacy in the province and it stood at the center of the commercial district in the general territory. Placed where everyone could see.I slowed at the entrance. Cassian never did anything quietly when it came to influence. Especially not this… generosity packaged as influence.Inside the building, the air was different and packed with nobles. And at the center of it, Seris stood, s

Chapter 10Cassian's PovThe study was dark when I walked in. I didn't bother with the lights.I poured myself a drink—whiskey, and leaned against the desk. For the first time in three years, I felt the bond again. Heat curled under my ribs. It had been faint during the banquet, but now, alone in the dark, it was strong. I took a long sip. The whiskey burned going down. It didn't help.At first, I didn't love Elara, but I needed a Luna. A stability for the pack, and she had simply… fit the description. It should have been simple. But that day at the ball, it changed. And that was the only reason she was here now. The connection and instant recognition I felt made everything else irrelevant for a moment. I was drawn to her, she was my mate. But immediately after the marriage, the feeling, bond, everything disappeared. Just like that.In my confused state, Seris was finally able to contact me after a year of marriage. She was my childhood best friend and had grown up around the pack

Chapter 9Elara's PovThe words hung in the air between us. It was a question, I could still convince him I wasn't, but yet I couldn't breathe. “Why would you say that?""I grew up with hunters, Elara. I know pregnancy when I smell it." I backed away. My heel hit a loose stone, and I stumbled. "You're wrong."He didn't move closer. "Am I?""I'm not pregnant.""And even if I were, it wouldn't be your concern."Rowan studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "Fine. You want to keep your secret? I won't tell anyone. But you need to understand something.""What?""Cassian will never protect that child. He's too blind. And Seris…" His jaw tightened. "Seris will kill it if she finds out.”I looked away, staring out at the dark expanse below the cliff. The silence stretched. Then Rowan exhaled slowly."Before you married Cassian," he said, almost hesitating, "I thought… maybe I had a chance with you.”A chance. That was a word that shouldn't exist anymore.“It's over, Rowan. Ther

Chapter 8Elara's Pov Tears blinded my eyes as I stepped onto the cliff, it overlooked the entire province.I had walked here without thinking, past the hotel's back entrance and the frozen fountain. I stood at the edge, gripping the iron railing so hard my knuckles ached. The wind tore at my dress. I had let my guard down by letting Cassian kiss me. The way he had pulled me close… only to shove me away. What was I thinking? He already has the worst thoughts towards me and this confirmed it. Typical Cassian. I pressed the tears down—the same way I had done for three years.I used to think he would change. That if I endured enough, he might look at me and see me. What a fool. My hand moved, settling lightly over my stomach. At least I got something out of it. My child."You'll freeze out here." I didn't turn. I knew that voice.Eliza stepped up beside me, her dark hair whipping across her face. She had draped a fur shawl over her shoulders, stolen from someone's chair, probably. She h

Chapter 7Elara's Pov Cassian's hands closed around my waist before I even realized he had moved."Dance," he said quietly. I struggled to pull away, but he held on firmly.“Play your part Elara." I almost laughed. Cassian hadn't danced with me in years. Not since the wedding, when he held me like a man attending a funeral. But I couldn't dance, not right now. I was nauseous from everything. Perfumes, sweats and him."Cassian,” I whispered as the orchestra shifted into a slow waltz. By now, the council members stopped talking, their eyes following our movements. To them, we probably looked like the perfect Alpha couple.I forced a small smile. Cassian spun me lightly and the skirt of my dress flared as I turned.“Can we talk outside?" Our eyes met and something flashed in them. Something I hadn't seen since he married me. Warmth. Now, our bodies were closer than before that, his chest brushed mine with every breath.Don't look down at my stomach. Don't notice. Please. I had been care

Chapter 6Cassian's PovI flipped through the documents on my desk, scanning the last reports from the neutral packs. The election was too close to allow mistakes."When do the council members arrive?" I asked without looking up.My beta, Adrian, stood near the window. "About half an hour, Alpha.""
