Sherry stood in the center of the suite, the silence thick after Enzo’s departure. His last words hung like a storm cloud.

“You’re safe here.”

She crossed her arms over her chest tightly and stared darkly at the door long after it had creaked shut silently behind somebody else.

Her heart thudded sluggishly now with fear ebbing rapidly, and something far more sinister supplanted it entirely in its wake.

She felt a hollow, dull ache that she couldn't quite put her finger on.

He married a man who simultaneously shielded and shunned her, showing off brutal fear yet evading deeply emotional eye contact.

She sighed heavily after a moment and then slowly, with considerable reluctance, moved towards a closet.

Tonight featured a business dinner down in Tokyo, being part of their event of this utterly bewildering detour somehow.

She tried on four different frocks before opting for a sleek emerald green silk number that cinched at her waist and flared somewhat downwards around her knees.

The bullet cracked the night wide open.Screams shattered the gala-like glass.Security dove. Guests hit the floor. Champagne flutes exploded on impact. And Sherry couldn't move. The air left her lungs in one strangled gasp as she turned-She was just in time to see Enzo stumble, blood blooming across his white shirt like a rose with thorns.No.He dropped to his knees. No, no, no-She ran.People screamed and scattered, but she tunneled through them like a woman possessed. The moment slowed. Sound drowned beneath the pounding of her heart. She dropped beside him.His body slumped into her arms, blood slick between her fingers. His eyes fluttered. His lips were pale. "Sherry...""Stay with me," she begged, her voice breaking. "Don't you dare leave me again?"His breath hitched. He gripped her wrist."I'm here," she whispered. "I'm not going anywhere."Blood pooled across the floor. Around them. Through them. Like fate written in crimson.Ethan barreled through the panicked crowd, shov

The world was burning. Or maybe it was just her. Sherry stood in the center of Enzo's penthouse, phone dangling from her fingers, the screen froze on breaking news: "Vehicle explosion on Fifth Avenue. Victim suspected to be Enzo Blackwood." Her breath had stopped. Her knees buckled. She collapsed against the cold marble floor as reality caved in. No. Not like this. Not when she had finally chosen him. Not when he had just let her go and given himself instead. The silver chain around her neck is Enzo's ring. It felt suddenly heavier than bone. She clutched it like a lifeline. Her phone rang again. Ethan. She scrambled to answer. "Please-please tell me he's alive." His voice was tense, controlled. "He's alive. Not in that car. It was a decoy." Sherry dropped her head into her hands, sobbing once, hard and raw, before forcing herself to breathe again. Ethan continued. "My boss has been moved to a secure location. But the hit was meant for him. They want him off

The hotel hallway swallowed her footsteps. Sherry's pulse pounded as she pressed the elevator button, blinking back the tears that refused to fall. Her fingers trembled. Not from fear. Not entirely. From knowing. Knowing that love with Enzo Blackwood didn't come wrapped in flowers or vows. It came in ultimatums. Blood-stained promises. Hands that held you like worship one minute and shackled you the next. The elevator door slid open. But before she could step in, a hand slammed against the metal. Enzo. His chest heaved with restraint. Hair is disheveled. The tie was hanging loose around his neck. A man who had lost everything once and refused to let it happen again. "Don't walk away," he said, his voice guttural. Sherry didn't meet his eyes. "I already did." "I let you go once. And it nearly killed me. I won't survive it again." Her lips parted to fight, to cry, to beg, but no words came. He stepped into the elevator and hit the emergency stop button. Then the silence tur

The words rang in her skull long after the call ended. "There's a price on your head, Sherry." She couldn't breathe. The hotel bed felt suddenly too warm. The silence between her and Enzo was too loud. She stood, bare feet pressing into the plush carpet, heart hammering as she paced to the window. The night outside was a velvet lie, quiet, cold, too still for the chaos unravelling inside her. "They want me dead," she said softly. Enzo didn't flinch. He sat at the edge of the bed, shirtless, head bowed, hands clasped like he was praying or suppressing violence. "I'll increase protection," he said. Sherry turned sharply. "Protection isn't the problem, Enzo. You are." His head lifted slowly. "What happened to me and to us wasn't supposed to be like this. I didn't sign up to be hunted or trapped in someone else's war." His voice was flat. "No, you signed a contract." She stared. "You're really going to throw that in my face right now?" He stood. "That contract saved your compa

The photo of her broken apartment door burned into Sherry's vision like a brand. She stared at her phone, her breath thin, her fingers trembling.STAY WITH HIM. DIE WITH HIM.She didn't speak. Couldn't.Enzo's presence behind her was thundercloud-heavy, coiled, and silent. She felt a weird shift in the atmosphere suddenly when his mask slipped and the predator beneath stirred quite ominously. He took her phone slowly, his eyes scanning a message very carefully with evident unease beneath his rugged exterior.Something icy slowly crystallized in his gaze, but his expression remained stubbornly unchanged. "When did you get this?" he asked, voice flat."Just now. After the voicemail."He turned away, already dialing. "Ethan. We need a full security sweep. Sherry's apartment has been breached. Whoever sent this was inside."She barely heard his words. Her mind was spiraling."Enzo..."He turned back. She whispered, "Is someone trying to kill me... or kill us?"His expression didn't soften.

The message still sat on the screen like a stain no one could scrub away."You're not the first. And if you stay, you won't be the last."Sherry grasped the robe tightly around herself and cold dread slid slowly beneath her skin with unsettling stealth.Enzo's thumb poised precariously above her phone with his jaw clenched tight and every fiber of him tensed up like a loaded gun.His voice was terrifyingly calm and low when it finally came from deep within his throat."Where were you when this came in?"She swallowed. "Sitting right here."He spun rapidly toward the door with awkward suddenness."Ethan."Footsteps echoed loudly down a dimly lit hallway within mere seconds after a faint whisper of Ethan drifted silently through the air.Ethan appeared in the doorway, looking sharp in all-black. And his eyes were going from Enzo's bare chest to Sherry's shaking hands."Someone got a message to her," Enzo said without turning."Trace it. Kill it."Ethan nodded and vanished without a word.
