Lucas’s POV

The smell of wolfsbane clung to me like smoke.

Every breath was fire in my lungs, every step i took was agony. My claws had already receded, my body was too weak to hold the shift. The wounds across my shoulder burned, veins pulsing dark beneath the skin, the poison spreading slow but steady.

Jarek wasn’t much better. He leaned hard on Ryn, his face was pale, lips pressed into a thin line. Sweat dripped down his temples as he tried to keep his balance, his side still bleeding where the blade had cut him.

We hadn’t stopped moving since the ambush. If we stopped, we wouldn’t start again.

“Lucas,” Ryn muttered, his voice tight. “You’re slowing down.”

“I’m fine,” I growled, though my legs trembled beneath me. “Keep moving.”

“Fine my ass,” Jarek rasped, his voice hoarse but laced with bitter humor. “You look like you’re about to faceplant into the dirt.”

“Shut up,” I snapped, though the words had no bite. My throat was too dry.

The forest around us blurred at the edges. The sha

Ava’s POVMia wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hands and I continued kneading the dough harder than I should.“Not like that,” Mia said, laughing as she tried to show me how to knead the dough. “You’ll make it tough if you keep pressing so hard.”I huffed and pushed back at the lump with my palm. “Maybe I want it tough, like a warrior’s bread.”Mia rolled her eyes, her smile softening the sharp lines of her face. “Bread doesn’t need to fight, Ava.”“Then you clearly haven’t met my bread.” I smirked, and before I could think twice, I dabbed my dough-covered finger against her nose, leaving a white smudge right on the tip.She squealed and tried to swipe it off, glaring at me half-heartedly. “You did not just—”“Oh, I did.” I grinned. For a moment, the two of us just laughed. Loud and unguarded, until the ache in my ribs from my wound made me wince and clutch my side. Mia’s face instantly sobered.“Careful,” she whispered, her hand hovering near me like she wanted to h

Ava’s POVWhen my eyes fluttered open, the first thing I noticed was that I wasn’t in my chamber. The sheets under me were too coarse, the air too sharp with the faint bite of wolfsbane and herbs.I blinked, pushing myself up slowly. Then it hit me.This was the bed Lucas had been lying in.For a second, I just sat there, confused. The last thing I remembered was sitting on the stool at his side, my hand wrapped tight around his, whispering to him that I wouldn’t let go. I hadn’t meant to close my eyes, hadn’t meant to rest. I’d promised myself I’d sit there all night if I had to.But now, I was lying on the bed and he was no where in sight.“Lucas?” My voice echoed loudly in the quiet chamber.I swung my legs off the bed, wincing as my side protested and hurried out into the hallway. The first guard I saw stiffened to attention as I rushed toward him.“Where’s Lucas?” I demanded. The warrior looked startled for a moment, then cleared his throat. “Alpha Lucas is at the training ground

Kane’s POVI shut the door slowly behind me, after looking at Ava and Lucas inside the room for a while. For a moment, I just stood there in the corridor, staring at nothing. My fists were clenched tight at my sides, not because of the rogues or Orion this time but because of what I’d just seen.Ava, sitting there at Lucas’s bedside, clutching his hand like it was the only thing tethering her to the earth. Her eyes were wet with tears, her face pale with fear, whispering to him like she’d shatter if he slipped away.It shouldn’t have made my chest ache. It shouldn’t have made Rafe, inside me snarl with possessive rage. She was his mate too, ours. But gods help me, the jealousy twisted in my gut anyway.“She was crying for him,” Zack muttered beside me.I snapped my head toward him, but his expression was unreadable. He was accusing or mocking, he was just stating a fact. His arms were crossed tightly across his chest, his gaze hard on the far wall.“She was worried,” I said sharply. “

Ava’s POVThe corridor outside my chamber buzzed with whispers. I heard my name, Kane’s name, and then another word that froze my blood.“…Alpha Lucas…”My stomach twisted, a sick heaviness filling me. I shoved myself off the chair, ignoring the sting of the half-healed wound in my side. The two guards at my door straightened instantly.“What did you just say?” My voice came out sharper than I intended, almost a growl. The younger of the two guards glanced nervously at the older. “Alpha Lucas has returned… wounded.”My heart stopped. “What?”The older guard bowed quickly. “The healers are with him, my lady. He’s stable—”I didn’t wait for more, my bare feet slapped against the cold stone as I sprinted down the hall. Pain shot through my ribs but I didn’t slow down. When I turned the corner, I nearly collided with two figures standing outside the door, it was Kane and Zack.Kane’s face was carved in stone, unreadable but his fists clenched at his sides told me everything. Zack leaned

Kane’s POVThe moment the messenger burst into the hall, my stomach dropped.“Alpha!” the warrior shouted, his face pale. “It’s Alpha Lucas. He’s back…he is wounded.”I was on my feet before he finished speaking. My chair screeched against the stone floor, echoing loud in the chamber. Rage surged through me, hot and sharp, my wolf snarling inside my chest.“Where?” My voice came out as a growl.“The healers’ wing. They’re tending him now.”I didn’t wait. I stormed down the corridor, every step fueled by anger, not just at the rogues who dared to touch him, but at Lucas himself. I had told him not to go, I had already sent trackers for Orion but no…Lucas had to move on his own, reckless as always.First it was Ava, now my brother. The rogues had taken too much from me, from us and I would make every last one of them pay.---The healer’s chamber was chaos when I pushed through the doors.Healers circled around Lucas, working quickly. His shirt had been stripped away, his torso smeared
