The courtyard of the Ironfang Citadel had become a nightmare of blood and black smoke. Monstrous, skeletal quadrupeds made of shadow and bone—the Shadow Coven's dread-beasts—tore through the royal guards with mercilessness. Its spit burned through solid iron. Screams cut through the sound of clashing swords, and the air turned thick with the stink of burning meat and ancient rot.

Throwing himself down the steps, Julian's bones cracked as he shifted in the air. A giant black wolf slammed into the shadow-beasts, snapping two of them on impact. His roar shook the stone walls, jarring the routing guards back to their senses. He tore violently into whatever stood in front of him. Pure instinct took over, reducing the chaotic fight to targets, nothing more.

Lyra sprinted into the courtyard a second later and stood right behind Julian. Her heart hammered, though her expression remained fixed with grim determination.

Unlike the heavy, brutal fighting style of the Ironfang wolves, the girl moved with fluid, lethal grace. Every step was a calculated gamble between survival and death. Her silver dagger carved into the shadow-beasts, leaving trails of blinding golden fire that incinerated them from the inside out.

"She really is a Sun Wolf," Julian thought inwardly as ripping the throat out of another beast. There was something almost reverent in the observation, a flicker of awe he didn't have time to examine.

"Julian! Behind you!" Lyra screamed over the noise.

A massive, eight-legged dread-beast lunged from the shadows above the gatehouse, aiming directly for Julian's exposed flank. Lyra didn't hesitate. She threw her dagger. The silver blade spun through the air before embedding itself directly into the creature's core. It exploded into black ash seconds before hitting the King.

The fight breaking, Julian shifted back to human form, his chest heaving. He yanked the silver blade out and shoved it back to Lyra. Catching her eye, he complimented, "Nice throw."

"Don't get used to me saving your life," Lyra replied, snatching the dagger back, though a small smile touched her lips.

"Sire!" Beta Valor scrambled over, gasping for air. Thick black sludge and ash coated his armor. "The courtyard is secure. But Elder Jonas... He just took a detachment and ran for the Vault of Eyes!"

Lyra went dead pale. "The Vault. That's where the original Sun Pack Treaty is kept!" she shrieked.

"He's going to destroy the only proof Ironfang had," Julian murmured in fury. His jaw clenched so hard it ached. Years of trust curdled into something bitter. "Valor, secure the perimeter and lock down the Ironfang Citadel. No one gets past the gates!" he commanded.

"Understood, Sire!"

Julian turned to Lyra, searching her face for any sign of hesitation and finding none. "You come with me. It's time we get some answers from my chief advisor." They sprinted down the subterranean corridors beneath the palace. Their footsteps echoed off damp walls.

The tunnels got colder the deeper they went. Lyra kept quiet, practically feeling the suppressed rage rolling off Julian with every step. When they finally hit the Vault of Eyes, the massive iron doors were already blown off their hinges.

Inside, Elder Jonas was waiting by the glowing altar. He wasn't alone. A Shadow Coven Priestess stood next to him in torn violet robes, her dark magic making the air in the room feel heavy and toxic.

"Ah, Julian," Jonas said, turning around without a hint of fear. "You always were too quick on your feet. Just like your father."

Julian stepped in front of Lyra protectively, betrayal burning hot beneath his eyes. "You betrayed the crown. You brought these abominations into my territory!"

"Betrayed?" Jonas let out a wet, rattling laugh. "I saved this pack. Your father was a coward, Julian. He was going to split the Ley Lines with the Sun wolves. I just did what had to be done to keep Ironfang on top." He shot a manic grin at Lyra. "And now that she's here, we finally have the blood we need to open the Gate."

Lyra pulled her second blade, her eyes darting to the altar. "He's going to use the book to siphon the ley lines!"

The Priestess stepped forward, her face hidden beneath a hood, her tone dripping with cold satisfaction. "Too late." She slammed her staff onto the floor.

A pulse of dark energy shot through the ground, slamming Julian and Lyra against the stone walls with bruising force.

The floor beneath Jonas cracked open, revealing a swirling vortex of purple and black flame that pulsed like a living wound.

"Join us, Julian, or perish with the old world!" Jonas yelled as he and the Priestess began to sink into the vortex.

Julian forced himself up against the crushing dark pressure. His wolf surged to the surface with a desperate, primal need. He lunged forward, grabbing Jonas' arm just as the vortex began to collapse. With a grunt of massive effort, muscles yelling in protest, Julian ripped the black leather tome from Jonas' hands before the elder vanished into the dark void. The closing rift swallowed his triumphant laughter.

The room fell silent as the magic dissolved, leaving only the echo of what had just transpired and the acrid smell of scorched stone.

Lyra slumped against the wall, coughing up dust. Her body trembled from the aftershock of the blast.

Julian stepped forward, clutching the ancient book. His face was thunderous—furious and sick with the realization that he'd been played. Every story about his father's golden reign and piece of advice from the council. It was all a massive, orchestrated lie. The truth of it hit him like a sucker punch, stealing the breath right out of his lungs.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked, offering her his hand. His voice was gentler now than it had been all night.

Lyra looked at his outstretched hand, then up into his warm amber eyes, searching for something she couldn't quite name. Slowly, she took it, her fingers trembling slightly against his palm. "I'm fine. But look at the book."

Julian forced the tome open, his fingers actually trembling against the old leather cover. Right on the first page, unmistakable in his father's handwriting, was a single decree:

The Royal Line of Ironfang and the Royal Line of Sun shall be joined by blood to seal the Gate forever.

Just below that, inked in faded gold: Julian Vance and Lyra Sun-Light.

The fated mate bond wasn't an accident or a blessing from the moon. It was a calculated arrangement, drafted years before their packs were slaughtered. Julian traced his thumb over Lyra's name. Every single thing he thought was free will had been planned out.

Lyra gave up on sleep entirely. The silence in her quarters was suffocating. Lyra threw off the blankets and slipped out into the dark corridors of the inner sanctuary. The thick stone walls usually made her feel safe, but tonight they just felt like a tomb. Her head was a mess of racing thoughts and bad feelings. That Blood Trial announced two days ago was a setup. She could feel it down in her gut. Cassian looked way too pleased with himself, wearing that gross, untouchable grin when he called for the trial by combat. He wanted Julian dead, and he was using ancient tradition to do it.As Lyra neared the courtyard archway, a cold draft drifted up from the balcony below, carrying the low, hurried murmur of people talking in secret.Instinct took over immediately. She melted into the deepest shadows, pressed her back against the cool stone wall, and crept closer to the edge, straining to listen."...it will be arranged. Julian stared at the yellowed parchment on his desk. The royal seal of his father, King Alaric, stared right back. The silence in the stone study was suffocating.By the fireplace, Lyra was shivering. She winced, using her teeth and one hand to pull a linen bandage tight over a jagged gash on her arm. The blood immediately soaked through the fabric."My father knew," Julian said quietly. He touched the faded ink. "He saw the Coven coming and tried to build an alliance with this betrothal. Jonas murdered him before he could sign it.""And framed the Sun Pack to start a war," Lyra added, her tone bitter. She tied off the bandage with her teeth and free hand. "My entire life... the destruction of my home, my family's death... it was all just a move on his chessboard. We were nothing but pawns to him."Julian stood up, the heavy wooden chair scraping harshly against the stone floor. He bypassed the desk, closing the distance between him and Lyra. He stopped just inches from her, dwarfing

The High Tower wasn't built for housing guests. It was where the kingdom locked away political prisoners, disgraced nobles, and anybody else too dangerous for the regular dungeons. The cells were rigged with thick, silver-laced iron bars—a brutal setup designed to constantly drain a Lycan's energy and keep their inner wolf entirely subdued.Lyra perched on a hard, freezing slab of stone, watching the capital move through its evening routine from a high, barred loophole. Down in the streets, people were living their normal, clueless lives, completely unaware of what was coming. By contrast, her own reality was shrinking fast.Lyra pressed her fingertips against her forearm and hissed. The skin beneath the glowing runes radiated a constant, feverish heat—a permanent reminder of who she was and what she was carrying. Deep volcanic vents running straight through kept the stone warm, serving as a permanent reminder of the unstable power holding the whole Lycan kingdom by a thread.King Julian Vance rested his forearm against the armrest. His amber eyes scanned the grand hall with the weary vigilance of a man who trusted little and forgave less.At twenty-eight, Julian was the youngest King to unite the seven Northern Packs, a feat accomplished not through tyranny, but through a brutal, calculating, pragmatic edge that had cost him more sleepless nights than he cared to admit. While the court elders argued over border taxes, Julian's wolf somehow wouldn't settle. It paced hard in the back of his mind, restless like an animal smelling a bad storm rolling in. The air in the hall felt wrong. It carried a dry, biting scent—crushed ash and dead magic that should have been wiped out a century ago during the Great Cleansing.Julian kept his mouth
