When a brutal warlord eradicated her pack six years ago, Valerie Vance swore an oath of vengeance. Living as a ghost in the frozen wilderness of the Iron Ridge, she sacrificed everything to protect her surviving brother and the shattered remnants of her people. But when a tactical ambush goes disastrously wrong, Valerie is captured by the very monster who destroyed her past: Soren Blackwood, the ruthless Sovereign Alpha of the Northern Apex. Instead of ordering her execution, Soren demands a soul-binding blood contract. He offers her pack immunity and survival in exchange for Valerie’s total submission as his personal blood-anchor and captive. Forced into the opulent, deadly sanctuary of Soren’s iron fortress, Valerie vows to dismantle his empire from within. Yet behind the oppressive luxury of his inner sanctum, Valerie uncovers a dangerous secret: Soren is afflicted by an ancient, rotting blood curse that threatens to destroy his mind and unleash chaos across the continent. Worse still, she discovers that her own uncle orchestrated her family’s slaughter—and that Soren’s dark, intoxicating aura isn't just an Alpha’s dominance, but the primal call of their fated mate bond. As deadly political conspiracies brew among rival Southern packs, the incendiary, explicit passion between captive and sovereign explodes into an all-consuming fire. Bound by blood, duty, and raw physical desire, Valerie must choose between the vengeance she burned for and the terrifying Alpha who holds her heart, her body, and the fate of the realm in his hands.

CHAPTER 1: THE SCENT OF IRON AND ASH

The wind howling off the jagged peaks of the Frostfang Ridge tasted of frozen zinc, old blood, and burning pine.

Valerie Vance crouched on the edge of the granite overhang, her midnight-black hair bound tightly back with a leather strip, her fingers numb inside her worn fur gauntlets. Through the narrow brass tube of her field glass, she watched the valley road three hundred feet below.

A heavy iron-plated war carriage, pulled by six massive, black-maned war-steeds, churned through the deep snow. Flanking the carriage were twenty heavily armored cavalrymen—the Elite Apex Guard. They wore the terrifying sigil of the Southern Sovereign stamped across their silver breastplates: a snarling wolf head crowned in black flames.

Soren Blackwood.

Even hearing his name spoken in hushed whispers around the campfire made Valerie’s pulse spike with a dark, volatile mixture of rage and primal adrenaline.

Six years ago, Soren Blackwood had brought his iron legion down upon her family’s ancestral estate. In a single night of fire and bloodshed, her father’s pack was shattered, her heritage burned to ash, and Valerie was forced to flee into the wild, unforgiving northern wilderness with her younger brother, Kaelen, and a handful of starving survivors.

For six long years, she had lived like a ghost. She had scavenged for meat, hunted in the shadows, and bled to keep Kaelen alive. She had sworn an oath over her father’s grave that if she ever found herself within arm's reach of the Sovereign Alpha, she would plunge a silver blade straight through his cold, arrogant heart.

"Valerie," a hushed, anxious voice hissed from the treeline behind her.

Kaelen crept forward, his leather hunting tunic pulled tight around his broad shoulders. At nineteen, he possessed their father's fiery eyes, but none of the cold, calculating discipline that Valerie had been forced to forge within herself.

"The scouting report was correct," Kaelen whispered, his hand resting heavily on the hilt of his hunting knife. "He's travelling light. No heavy infantry. Just his personal guard. If we roll the granite boulders down into the choke point at the Devil's Elbow, we can crush the lead horses, trap the carriage, and—"

"No," Valerie snapped, her voice low, razor-sharp, and commanding. She didn't turn her gaze from the spyglass. "Look at the pacing of the flank guards, Kaelen. They aren't in a defensive formation. They're baiting an ambush. Soren wants someone to attack him in this pass."

"He killed our father!" Kaelen snarled, his voice breaking with volatile emotion. "He stole our lands! He forced us to live like dogs in the dirt! We have forty warriors hidden along the ridge with heavy cross-bows and silver-tipped bolts. We will never get a clean shot at him again!"

"I said no, Kaelen!" Valerie turned, her dark violet eyes flashing with an unmistakable, dominant flare of Alpha authority that made her brother flinch back an inch. "If we strike now without knowing his exact destination, we lose the element of surprise permanently. We fall back to the winter camp. Now."

Kaelen clenched his jaw, his chest heaving as he stared at her. For a terrifying second, Valerie thought he might challenge her. But then he spat into the snow, turned on his heel, and retreated into the dense fir trees.

Valerie let out a slow, shaking breath, her pulse hammering against her ribs. She lowered the glass, taking one last look down at the dark carriage below.

Suddenly, the carriage door swung open.

Valerie froze, every nerve ending in her body firing at once.

A tall figure stepped out onto the iron runner of the moving carriage, completely unbothered by the bitter thirty-degree wind.

Soren Blackwood.

Valerie’s throat went dry. The reports had not done his physical presence justice. He was massive—a towering wall of broad shoulders and carved muscle wrapped in a heavy, dark-furred mantle over a dark leather vest. His charcoal hair was pulled back into a tight braid at the crown of his head, leaving his sharp, terrifyingly handsome jawline exposed to the icy air. Even from three hundred feet away, his physical aura was stifling—a thick, crushing weight of absolute Alpha dominance that radiated off him like heat off an iron furnace.

Then, Soren slowly turned his head.

He didn't look at the road. He didn't look at his guards.

He raised his head, his sharp amber eyes locking directly onto the exact rock ledge where Valerie lay hidden in the snow.

Valerie gasped, pulling back instantly into the shadows, her back slamming against the cold granite wall. Her heart pounded wildly against her sternum.

It's impossible, she thought frantically, her hands trembling as she adjusted her cloak. I'm downwind. The scent mask oil should have hidden my presence completely. He couldn't possibly know...

A sudden, ear-splitting scream shattered the silence of the forest.

Kaelen.

Valerie’s blood turned to liquid ice. She spun around, unsheathing her twin silver-alloy daggers in a fluid, deadly motion, and sprinted into the dense woods toward the direction of her brother's voice.

She burst into the small clearing fifty yards behind the ridge—and stopped dead in her tracks.

The forty pack warriors she had left hidden in the brush were already on their knees, their weapons stripped from their hands, encircled by a dozen Apex Guard cavalrymen who had somehow moved behind them without making a single sound.

Standing in the center of the clearing, holding Kaelen by the back of his neck like a helpless pup, was Lyra Drake—Soren’s chief spymaster.

"Valerie, run!" Kaelen roared, thrashing wildly in Lyra’s iron grip.

Valerie lowered her posture, her violet eyes narrowing into lethal slits as she shifted her balance, preparing to lunge forward to slice Lyra's throat. "Let him go, Lyra. Your quarrel is with me."

"Is it?" a deep, gravelly baritone rumbled from behind her.

The voice was so rich, so heavy, and so saturated with pure, dark Alpha dominance that Valerie’s body reacted before her mind could process it. A involuntary shiver ran down her spine, her knees buckling slightly as the sheer weight of his aura slammed into her senses.

She spun around, raising her daggers in a defensive cross.

Soren Blackwood stood less than five feet away.

Close up, he was terrifying. His broad chest rose and fell with slow, measured breaths. The jagged scar running down his cheek to his collarbone only amplified his brutal, lethal masculine perfection. His scent hit her like a physical blow—rich mahogany, cedar smoke, crushed winter berries, and the sharp, metallic tang of raw, unadulterated power.

It was an addictive, intoxicating scent that made Valerie’s core ache with a sudden, horrifying wave of liquid heat—a reaction so intense and unnatural that it terrified her to her very bones.

Soren didn't draw a weapon. He simply stood there, his hands clasped casually behind his back, his glowing amber eyes dragging slowly down her body, inspecting her with cool, possessive calculation.

"Valerie Vance," Soren purred, his voice a low, vibrating growl that seemed to rattle the very bones in her chest. "Six years hiding in the snow like a wild beast. You’ve grown... remarkably dangerous."

"I am going to kill you, Soren," Valerie spat, her voice tight, her knuckles white on the hilts of her daggers. "I am going to rip your throat out and feed your heart to the wolves."

Soren’s lips twitched upward into a dark, devastatingly attractive smirk that sent a surge of pure fire straight to Valerie’s belly.

"You are welcome to try, little bird," Soren said softly, stepping forward into her personal space.

He moved with the silent, terrifying grace of an apex predator. Valerie lunged, driving her right dagger straight toward his exposed throat.

Soren didn't even flinch. With lightning speed, his massive hand shot out, his thick fingers wrapping around her wrist like a steel manacle. He twisted her arm down, forcing her to drop the blade, while his other arm swept around her waist, slamming her chest flush against his rock-hard body.

Valerie gasped as her front pressed against his broad, muscular frame. The heat radiating off him was blinding. She raised her left dagger to sink it into his ribs, but Soren grabbed that wrist too, pinning both of her hands behind her back with a single hand.

He leaned down, his lips brushing the sensitive, exposed curve of her neck, right over her pounding pulse point. He took a long, deep breath, inhaling her scent—fresh snow, wild lavender, and the sweet, intoxicating musk of her rising arousal.

A low, primal growl of pure, possessive satisfaction vibrated deep within his chest.

"Fascinating," Soren murmured against her skin, his hot breath sending electric shocks straight down to Valerie’s thighs. "You smell like hatred... and desire."

"Release me, you bastard!" Valerie snarled, twisting violently in his grip, but his hold was an impenetrable fortress of pure muscle.

"I don't think I will," Soren whispered, his thumb lightly stroking the sensitive skin of her pinned wrists. "I came to these mountains to hunt rogue rebels. But I found something infinitely more valuable."

He drew back slightly, his amber eyes burning into her dark violet ones with an intensity that made Valerie’s breath catch in her throat.

"Your brother lives. Your people live," Soren said, his tone dropping into an absolute, unyielding decree. "On one condition."

Valerie glared at him, her chest heaving against his. "What condition?"

Soren’s dark smirk widened, his fingers tightening possessively over her waist, drawing her so tight against his lower body that she could feel the heavy, rigid outline of his arousal hard against her stomach.

"You come with me to the Apex Fortress," Soren murmured, his voice dipping into a dangerous, dark promise. "You yield your freedom, your body, and your blood to me. You become my captive... and I become your master."
