The spring thaw did not arrive in the North with gentleness; it came as a violent, roaring awakening.

For three weeks following the launch of the Vaelen's Revenge, the sun burned bright and hot against the high snows of the Spire Mountains. Millions of tons of melting ice poured down the granite gorges, feeding the glacial river until its banks overflowed with a surging, dark torrent. Down in the Ash-Hollow basin, the ice-dams choking the river mouth shattered into floating shrapnel, opening the deep-water channel directly into the boundless, grey expanse of the Western Ocean.

Riding the crest of that wild, unstoppable melt were the three leviathans of the new Northern Navy.

In the lead floated the Vaelen's Revenge, her black petrified ironwood hull gleaming under the bright spring sun, her three towering masts draped in heavy, midnight-black sails stamped with the entwined silver wolf and violet dragon. Flanking her port and starboard quarters were her sister dreadnoughts, the Frost-Claw and the Iron Serpent—each a two-hundred-foot war-spire plated in dragon-scale iron, their decks bristling with heavy ironwood catapults and double-barreled ballistas.

Behind the three dreadnoughts followed a fleet of forty fast Northern longboats and converted supply transports, carrying three thousand heavily armed Northern warriors, wolf-riders, and siege smiths.

Standing on the elevated quarterdeck of the Vaelen's Revenge, her hands gripping the carved ironwood railing, was Valerie.

The salt spray of the open ocean whipped against her face, smelling of deep water, kelp, and ozone. She wore her full combat leathers beneath a heavy grey wool mantle clasped with a silver wolf head. Across her collarbone, the mark of the soul-bond pulsed with a low, rhythmic warmth that cut effortlessly through the sea chill. At her back, Vaelen's Fang hummed in quiet, harmonic resonance with the twelve-foot dragon-scale ram mounted to the prow thirty feet below her boots.

Beside her at the heavy iron steering wheel stood Soren.

The Sovereign Alpha looked like a warlord born of the storm itself. His massive hands held the spokes of the heavy wheel with effortless control, adjusting the dreadnought’s course against the churning oceanic swells. His dark bear-pelt mantle billowed behind him in the coastal gale, and his molten amber eyes were fixed on the horizon, tracking the dark, jagged silhouette of the coastal cliffs ten miles to the south.

"The wind favors us," Soren rumbled, his deep baritone vibrating through the heavy timbers of the deck floor. His golden Alpha aura, heightened by the open horizon, radiated a steady, unshakeable warmth that enveloped Valerie’s side. "The tide will peak in two hours. We will hit the mouth of the Bay of Skulls right as the sun hits the western ridge."

Valerie turned her head, looking up at him. "And Malakor? Has Kaelen's advance outriders spotted any movement from his outer pickets?"

Soren’s eyes narrowed slightly, a dark, wolfish smile touching his beard. "The decoy raven did its work. Ronald's message told him we were starving in the mountains, so Malakor pulled his outer scout galleys back into the bay to conserve pitch and timber. He thinks he’s resting in an unassailable fortress, waiting for a Northern army that will never march overland."

Kaelen climbed the quarterdeck stairs, his boots thudding against the ironwood planks. He carried a heavy brass spyglass under his arm, his dark face flushed with the exhilaration of the open sea.

"Sovereign," Kaelen reported, bowing his head briefly to both of them. "The vanguard longboats have secured the outer reef channels. The entrance to the Bay of Skulls is five miles ahead."

He raised the spyglass, extending the brass tubes and pointing it toward a massive, cleft-like opening in the sheer black granite cliffs along the coast.

"The bay mouth is narrow—less than three hundred yards across," Kaelen continued, his voice dropping into a sharp, tactical focus. "As Julian warned us during the interrogation, Malakor has raised three heavy, bronze-link sea-chains across the water line between the watchtowers to bar the entrance."

Valerie reached out, taking the spyglass from Kaelen and raising it to her violet eye.

Through the polished glass, the entrance to the Bay of Skulls loomed like the gaping maw of a leviathan. High atop the black basalt cliffs flanking the narrow channel stood two massive, stone-built watchtowers flying the crimson serpent banners of Warlord Malakor. Stretching across the foam-flecked water between the towers were three massive, black-bronze chains, each link as thick as a man's torso, sagging slightly beneath the surface of the tide.

Beyond the chains, nestled inside the massive, volcanic bowl of the sheltered bay, lay the primary war-fleet of the Southern Empire.

Forty massive war-galleys—their hulls painted blood-red and bronze, their multi-tiered oars locked in resting positions—lay anchored in neat, confident lines along the inner stone docks. At the center of the fleet floated Malakor’s flagship, the Red Leviathan, a colossal, four-decked war-spire equipped with double catapult towers and a gilded dragon prow.

The Southern crews were entirely unprepared. Smoke rose lazily from cooking fires on the stone docks; sailors lounged along the wooden gangways; and the watchtowers held only skeleton guards.

"They haven't even raised their sails," Valerie observed softly, handing the spyglass back to Kaelen. A cold, dangerous spark of dragon-fire ignited in her dark violet eyes. "They truly believe no threat can cross the sea."

Soren turned the heavy steering wheel two spokes to port, aligning the prow of the Vaelen's Revenge directly with the center of the narrow channel and the bronze sea-chains ahead.

"Kaelen," Soren commanded, his voice dropping into the low, terrifying cadence of the Sovereign Alpha. "Order the Frost-Claw and the Iron Serpent to form a line of battle behind us. Keep the longboats two miles back until the chains are cleared."

"At once, Sovereign!" Kaelen barked, turning to sprint down the stairs to deliver the signal flags.

On the main deck below, Chieftain Torvin and fifty elite Northern Wardens stood ready. Torvin wore his heavy iron plate armor, his broad hands gripping a massive, double-headed war-axe, his grey eyes flashing with feral, bloodthirsty excitement as he looked toward the approaching basalt cliffs.

"ALL STATIONS!" Torvin roared to the crew, his booming voice carrying over the rushing salt spray. "FULL SAILS! MAN THE CATAPULTS! PREPARE FOR IMPACT!"

Up on the quarterdeck, Soren reached out with his right arm, wrapping his hand around Valerie’s waist and pulling herflush against his side. Through their soul-bond, his wild, inexhaustible Alpha strength surged into her, fusing with her celestial dragon-fire until both of their aura-fields flared with a blinding, violet-gold radiance that bathed the entire quarterdeck in light.

Valerie drew Vaelen's Fang from her back. She held the two-foot iridescent blade high above her head, pointing the tip directly at the lead sea-chain stretching across the channel ahead.

"Valerie," Soren growled softly against her ear, his molten amber eyes blazing with absolute, unshakeable dominance. "Break his door down."

Valerie began to chant in the ancient, melodic tongue of the dragon-lords.

A column of searing, violet-magenta fire erupted from the tip of Vaelen's Fang, surging down the length of the spear, through her arm, and directly into the timber deck below. The magical energy traveled down the petrified ironwood keel like a bolt of lightning, pouring straight into the twelve-foot dragon-scale ram mounted at the prow.

BOOM.

The dragon-scale ram flared to life with blinding, solar brilliance. The razor-sharp, barbed fins along its sides began to hum with a high, pitch-perfect vibration that caused the surrounding sea-water to boil into a roaring cloud of white steam.

The Vaelen's Revenge accelerated. Driven by the roaring spring tide and the full surge of her black sails, twelve hundred tons of black iron and petrified wood hurled themselves toward the narrow basalt channel at thirty knots.

On the high watchtowers guarding the bay, the Southern skeleton guards finally spotted the colossal black ship charging out of the sea fog.

"ALARM!" a distant lookout shrieked, his voice faint against the gale. "ALARM! UNKNOWN WARSHIP APPROACHING THE SEA-CHAINS! TO ALL STATIONS!"

A frantic brass horn blared from the watchtowers, its sharp, echoing warning wailing across the calm waters of the inner bay. Southern sailors dropped their mess tins; captains scrambled onto the decks of their galleys in blind panic; and shadow-weavers rushed to the stone ramparts, their hands glowing with dark, unstable magic.

It was far too late.

The Vaelen's Revenge hit the narrow channel like a thunderbolt fallen from the heavens.

The heavy, black-bronze sea-chain—designed to stop standard oak galleys and snap their keels like dry twigs—caught the tip of the dreadnought's dragon-scale ram.

BOOM-CLANG!

The impact was catastrophic.

The heat of the dragon-fire glowing within the ram melted the black bronze links on contact, while the sheer, twelve-hundred-ton momentum of the ironwood dreadnought shattered the remaining links to shrapnel. Massive, three-hundred-pound iron chain fragments were thrown high into the air, raining down like artillery fire onto the stone watchtowers above.

Without slowing a single knot, the Vaelen's Revenge plowed straight through the second and third sea-chains, severing them like cobwebs.

The colossal dreadnought burst out of the narrow granite channel and surged directly into the pristine, mirror-like basin of the Bay of Skulls, her black sails billowed wide, her dragon-ram glowing like a falling star, and her battle-banner flying proud against the Southern sky.

Behind her, the Frost-Claw and the Iron Serpent poured through the broken gap, followed by forty Northern longboats roaring with the battle cries of three thousand mountain warriors.

Up on the quarterdeck of the lead dreadnought, Soren brought the heavy iron wheel around with a fierce, victorious roar, turning the Vaelen's Revenge broadside to face the panicked, anchored Southern war-fleet.

Valerie stood beside him at the railing, her dark violet eyes fixed on the magnificent, gilded deck of the Red Leviathan anchored five hundred yards away. Standing on the flagship's high stern-deck, surrounded by pale, trembling shadow-weavers, was Warlord Malakor himself—his jaw slack, his face pale as ash, his dark eyes staring in absolute, paralyzed horror at the black sea-drake that had just broken his impenetrable fortress.

Valerie raised Vaelen's Fang, pointing the blade straight at Malakor’s chest.

"FIRE THE CATAPULTS!" Valerie commanded, her voice ringing out across the Bay of Skulls like the trumpet of judgment.

The grand stone staircase leading to the apex of the Obsidian Citadel was silent save for the steady, echoing thud of heavy leather boots and the soft rustle of chainmail.Behind Soren and Valerie, three hundred picked elite Wardens—led by Chieftain Torvin and Commander Kaelen—formed a tight, iron-clad rearguard along the upper promenade, holding the grand archway against the lingering pockets of the Imperial Vanguard. The air at this height was thin, scalding, and heavy with the scent of sulfur and dark blood-magic emanating from the heart of the mountain. Before them stood the grand entrance to the Imperial Court: two sixty-foot doors forged from black volcanic glass, framed by carved stone bas-reliefs depicting the destruction of House Vaelen during the Great Purge.Valerie stopped three paces from the glass doors. Her dark dragon-scale armor glistened under the dim orange glare of the volcanic sky above. She looked at the carved glass depictions of her

The waters of the Inner Gulf were not blue; they were the color of stagnant ink, slicked with a perpetual film of sulfur and oil that steamed under the dim, orange glare of the volcanic sky.For six days following the purge at the Dragon Crypts, the Northern armada had pushed deeper into the heart of the Sunken Empire. Behind the lead dreadnought, the Vaelen's Revenge, sailed a battle-tested fleet: the Frost-Claw, the Iron Serpent, twenty heavily fortified supply longboats, and fifteen captured Imperial shadow-sloops now flying the silver wolf and violet dragon banner of the new alliance.Down on the main deck, three thousand Northern Wardens stood in quiet, grim formation. They had traded their snow-dusted furs for heavy iron mail lined with boiled leather, their broadswords and double-headed war-axes sharpened until the steel gleamed like ice. There was no singing, no boisterous shouting, and no beating of war-drums. The air in the gulf was so heavy with moisture and sulfuric heat t

The surface of the Sunken Reach was a tempest of iron, ash, and burning oil.Out at the narrow sea-gate, Commander Kaelen’s line was crumbling. The Vaelen’s Revenge lay anchored like a wounded beast, her starboard gunwales splintered where a heavy Imperial ram had sheared through her timbers. Beside her, the Frost-Claw was ablaze, her black sails sending thick, oily clouds of soot roaring into the midnight air as a dozen Imperial shadow-sloops swarmed around her like iron-shelled beetles.High Archon Morvath, dripping with boiling seawater and clinging to the shattered wreckage of his flagship's quarterdeck, hauled himself onto the deck of a surviving shadow-galleass. His dark silk robes were scorched, his iron mask warped from the heat of the underwater detonation."Focus all artillery on their flagship!" Morvath shrieked, his voice ragged with sulfur smoke and black blood. "The Queen is dead in the depths! The Alpha is ash! Crush the remnants of their No

The horns of the Sunken Empire wailed through the night fog, their brassy, mechanical notes reverberating off the hollow ribs of the ancient stone dragons. Out past the barrier reef, the silhouette of High Archon Morvath’s lead war-galley loomed—a dark, low-slung vessel propelled by four tiers of ash-wood oars and armored with black bronze plating. Behind it, a dozen smaller shadow-sloops moved like wolves through the shallow volcanic breakers."They intend to bottleneck us inside the caldera!" Commander Kaelen barked from the main deck of the Vaelen's Revenge, his heavy broadsword already drawn. He turned toward the quarterdeck, looking up at his Sovereign with fierce, unyielding Northern devotion. "Go, My Lord! Secure the purge-chamber. We will hold the sea-gate until the last drop of our blood!"Soren looked out across the deck at his sworn battle-brother. The decision to abandon the comfort of a secured fortress in favor of an uncharted voyage into hostile Southern waters was met not with hesitation by the Northern Wardens, but with the cold, stoic resolve of mountain wolves. For three days following the corruption of the harbor, the Northern siege smiths worked around the clock in shifts of forty. Armed with long-handled iron scrapers and barrels of concentrated lye forged from mountain ash, they scoured the hulls of the three dreadnoughts, stripping away the calcified black residue left by Morvath’s blood-magic. Where the dark rot had eaten into the outer planks, smiths drove broad iron braces directly over the petrified ironwood, sealing the seams with hot pitch and dragon-scale resin.By the dawn of the fourth day, the Vaelen's Revenge, the Frost-Claw, and the Iron Serpent sat high in the water, their black sails unfurled and snapping in the bitter coastal wind.Up on the elevated quarterdeck of the fla
