The Bay of Skulls had long been deemed an impenetrable cradle, a calm volcanic bowl protected by towering granite walls and guarded by the iron jaws of its sea-gates. For two centuries, Southern admirals had anchored their ships within its glassy, deep-water basin, confident that no northern storm or landbound army could ever breach their sanctuary.

In a single, splintering heart-beat, that illusion was shattered.

The broadside roar of the Vaelen's Revenge erupted across the water, a concussive wave of sound that bounced violently off the sheer basalt cliffs. Four heavy ironwood catapults mounted along the dreadnought’s starboard flank released in unison, sending two-hundred-pound iron-bound boulders coated in pitch and dragon-fire hurtling through the sky.

The projectiles struck the lead line of Southern war-galleys anchored along the eastern docks.

The impacts were catastrophic. The heavy catapult stones smashed through thin teak decks and carved through rows of pine oars, crushing Southern sailors where they stood before plunging straight through the bilges. Searing, violet-tinted pitch burst across the dry timber, spreading instantly into a towering inferno that consumed three galleys before their captains could even issue orders to cut their anchor cables.

"Reload! Fasten the winches!" Chieftain Torvin bellowed, his voice carrying over the crackle of flame and the shrieks of dying men. Down on the gun deck, sixty broad-shouldered Northern smiths and freed laborers worked in seamless, rhythmic precision, heaving replacement stones onto the leather slings while arming the high-tension iron springs. "Keep the pressure on their flanks! Don't let them form a line!"

Behind the Vaelen's Revenge, the Frost-Claw and the Iron Serpent fanned out in a classic crescent formation, their high, dragon-scaled bulwarks blocking the narrow mouth of the bay and cutting off any hope of escape toward the open sea.

The Southern fleet was in complete disarray. Dozens of galleys, trapped at their moorings, collided with one another as terrified captains ordered their oarsmen to reverse course. Thick, greasy black smoke billowed into the clear mountain air, choking the bay and blocking out the afternoon sun.

"Form the line!" a Southern commander shrieked from the deck of a three-tiered war-galley flying the golden sun flag of the Empire. "Turn the broadsides! Slay those northern dogs!"

Two Southern galleys, recovering from the initial shock, managed to slip their moorings and row aggressively toward the Vaelen's Revenge. Their bronze prows, carved in the shape of snarling sea-serpents, cut through the churning water as fifty crossbowmen lined their gunwales, unleashing a rain of heavy iron bolts against the dreadnought's black hull.

The bolts struck the petrified ironwood timber with dull, meaningless thuds, bouncing uselessly into the sea or skittering across the iron-plated bulwarks.

Up on the high quarterdeck of the Vaelen's Revenge, Soren didn't even flinch as a stray bolt embedded itself in the timber two inches from his shoulder. His massive hands adjusted the iron steering wheel with cold, lethal precision, turning the leviathan's prow directly toward the two advancing Southern galleys.

"They think their thin oak can withstand petrified ironwood," Soren rumbled, his molten amber eyes flaring with primal, wolfish amusement. His heavy voice vibrated through the deck timbers as his Alpha aura expanded, enveloping the entire ship in a warm, invigorating pulse that drove away all fear from his crew. "Show them what happens when a sea-drake feeds."

"Starboard wheel, two spokes!" Valerie called out, her dark violet eyes sweeping over the burning water.

She stood at Soren’s side, her indigo coat fluttering wildly in the heat-drafts rising from the burning ships below. Across her collarbone, the silver wolf mark glowed with a brilliant, luminous light, channeling the raw power of their soul-bond directly into Vaelen's Fang held firmly in her hand.

"Hold fast!" Soren thundered across the deck.

The Vaelen's Revenge lunged forward under full black sail, her twelve-foot dragon-scale ram gleaming with lethal, violet-gold dragon-fire.

The first Southern galley tried desperately to turn, her oarsmen backing water in a frantic, screaming panic. It was far too late. The dreadnought’s iron ram struck the galley full on her port side, right at the midship beam.

CRUNCH!

The sound of shattering timber echoed like a mountain landslide. The twelve-foot ram sheared straight through the Southern ship’s outer hull, snapping her heavy oak ribs like dry twigs and cleaving the galley completely in half. The force of the collision tossed fifty Southern sailors into the freezing, oil-slicked water as the two halves of the shattered warship capsized and sank into the depths within seconds.

Without losing momentum, the Vaelen's Revenge plowed directly into the second galley, her ironwood hull grinding against the smaller vessel's broadside, snapping all thirty of her starboard oars with a deafening sequence of cracks that sounded like musket fire.

"BOARDERS!" Torvin roared from the deck below, raising his double-headed war-axe. "NORTHERN STEEL! LEAVE NONE STANDING!"

A hundred elite Northern Wardens, clad in iron chainmail and heavy furs, threw iron grapple-hooks over the crippled galley's railing. With wild, bloodthirsty roars, the Wardens swung across the narrow gap on heavy hemp ropes, landing on the Southern deck like a pack of starving wolves.

The combat on the deck of the second galley was swift and brutal. The Southern sailors, accustomed to long-range artillery duels and smooth-water sailing, were completely overwhelmed by the sheer size and feral ferocity of the Northern warriors. Broadswords severed spear-shafts; heavy war-axes cleaved through brass breastplates; and within minutes, the crimson serpent flag was torn down from the mainmast and thrown into the sea.

Further out in the bay, the Frost-Claw under the command of Kaelen was delivering equal devastation.

Equipped with double-barreled iron ballistas firing heavy, chain-linked grapple spears, the Frost-Claw snared two Southern scout galleys attempting to slip past her starboard flank. Once hooked, the Northern crew cranked the steam-driven winches, dragging the two lighter Southern vessels inward until their hulls slammed together. The Northern archers, elevated high above on the dreadnought’s ironwood towers, rained heavy broad-head arrows down onto the open decks below, decimating the Southern crews before they could even draw their swords.

Meanwhile, the Iron Serpent engaged the stone watchtowers anchored along the inner harbor walls. Her catapults, loaded with heavy dragon-fire urns forged in the Ash-Hollow basin, launched glowing spheres of magical naphtha against the stone ramparts. Upon impact, the urns shattered, covering the stone battlements in unquenchable violet flames that sent Malakor’s shadow-weavers shrieking over the parapets into the sea below.

Within less than an hour of breaking the sea-gates, the pride of the Southern Empire’s navy lay in absolute ruin.

More than twenty galleys were burning out of control, their towering masts collapsing like falling trees into the water. Ten more had been crushed, sunk, or run aground on the rocky shoals along the bay's edge. The smooth surface of the Bay of Skulls was now a nightmare of black smoke, floating wreckage, burning pitch, and screaming men trying to swim toward the distant shore.

Only one major warship remained intact at the center of the inner harbor.

The Red Leviathan—Malakor’s colossal four-decked flagship—had finally managed to cut her heavy anchor cables. Her four massive, blood-red sails unfurled, catching the wind rushing down from the Spire Mountains as her three tiers of heavy brass oars beat the water into a frothing foam.

Surrounding the flagship were fifty elite guard galleys and three remaining shadow-weaver vessels, forming a tight defensive ring around their warlord's escape route toward the inner stone fortress on the northern shore.

Up on the quarterdeck of the Vaelen's Revenge, Soren adjusted his grip on the heavy steering wheel, his amber eyes fixed intently on the blood-red sails of the escaping flagship.

"He flees," Soren growled low, a dark, dangerous rumble vibrating in his broad chest. "The snake abandons his fleet to burn while he runs for his stone walls."

Valerie stepped to the edge of the railing, her hand coming up to rest over the silver wolf mark at her collarbone. She looked across the smoke-filled bay, watching as the Red Leviathan began to gain speed, her heavy brass ram pointing toward the sheltered inner slipway of the fortress docks.

"He won't make it to the shore," Valerie said softly, her dark violet eyes glowing with an intense, divine dragon-light that pierced through the thick columns of black smoke.

She turned to Soren, a fierce, confident smile playing on her lips. "Signal the Frost-Claw and the Iron Serpent to mop up the remaining galleys. The Vaelen's Revenge takes the flagship."

Soren’s dark beard twitched as he returned her smile with a savage, wolfish grin. He slammed his broad gauntlet down onto the wooden command rail, his voice thundering out across the burning water.

"FULL SAILS! MAN THE RAM! ALL HANDS PREPARE FOR IMPACT!"

The heavy black sails of the Vaelen's Revenge snapped taut as the wind filled them once more. The massive black dreadnought surged forward through the floating burning wreckage of the Southern fleet, her dragon-scale ram glowing bright against the darkened sky, cutting a straight, relentless line through the smoke toward Warlord Malakor's flagship.

The battle for the Bay of Skulls was won—but the final reckoning on the deck of the Red Leviathan was just beginning.

The grand stone staircase leading to the apex of the Obsidian Citadel was silent save for the steady, echoing thud of heavy leather boots and the soft rustle of chainmail.Behind Soren and Valerie, three hundred picked elite Wardens—led by Chieftain Torvin and Commander Kaelen—formed a tight, iron-clad rearguard along the upper promenade, holding the grand archway against the lingering pockets of the Imperial Vanguard. The air at this height was thin, scalding, and heavy with the scent of sulfur and dark blood-magic emanating from the heart of the mountain. Before them stood the grand entrance to the Imperial Court: two sixty-foot doors forged from black volcanic glass, framed by carved stone bas-reliefs depicting the destruction of House Vaelen during the Great Purge.Valerie stopped three paces from the glass doors. Her dark dragon-scale armor glistened under the dim orange glare of the volcanic sky above. She looked at the carved glass depictions of her

The waters of the Inner Gulf were not blue; they were the color of stagnant ink, slicked with a perpetual film of sulfur and oil that steamed under the dim, orange glare of the volcanic sky.For six days following the purge at the Dragon Crypts, the Northern armada had pushed deeper into the heart of the Sunken Empire. Behind the lead dreadnought, the Vaelen's Revenge, sailed a battle-tested fleet: the Frost-Claw, the Iron Serpent, twenty heavily fortified supply longboats, and fifteen captured Imperial shadow-sloops now flying the silver wolf and violet dragon banner of the new alliance.Down on the main deck, three thousand Northern Wardens stood in quiet, grim formation. They had traded their snow-dusted furs for heavy iron mail lined with boiled leather, their broadswords and double-headed war-axes sharpened until the steel gleamed like ice. There was no singing, no boisterous shouting, and no beating of war-drums. The air in the gulf was so heavy with moisture and sulfuric heat t

The surface of the Sunken Reach was a tempest of iron, ash, and burning oil.Out at the narrow sea-gate, Commander Kaelen’s line was crumbling. The Vaelen’s Revenge lay anchored like a wounded beast, her starboard gunwales splintered where a heavy Imperial ram had sheared through her timbers. Beside her, the Frost-Claw was ablaze, her black sails sending thick, oily clouds of soot roaring into the midnight air as a dozen Imperial shadow-sloops swarmed around her like iron-shelled beetles.High Archon Morvath, dripping with boiling seawater and clinging to the shattered wreckage of his flagship's quarterdeck, hauled himself onto the deck of a surviving shadow-galleass. His dark silk robes were scorched, his iron mask warped from the heat of the underwater detonation."Focus all artillery on their flagship!" Morvath shrieked, his voice ragged with sulfur smoke and black blood. "The Queen is dead in the depths! The Alpha is ash! Crush the remnants of their No

The horns of the Sunken Empire wailed through the night fog, their brassy, mechanical notes reverberating off the hollow ribs of the ancient stone dragons. Out past the barrier reef, the silhouette of High Archon Morvath’s lead war-galley loomed—a dark, low-slung vessel propelled by four tiers of ash-wood oars and armored with black bronze plating. Behind it, a dozen smaller shadow-sloops moved like wolves through the shallow volcanic breakers."They intend to bottleneck us inside the caldera!" Commander Kaelen barked from the main deck of the Vaelen's Revenge, his heavy broadsword already drawn. He turned toward the quarterdeck, looking up at his Sovereign with fierce, unyielding Northern devotion. "Go, My Lord! Secure the purge-chamber. We will hold the sea-gate until the last drop of our blood!"Soren looked out across the deck at his sworn battle-brother. The giant Alpha bowed his head once—a deep, solemn acknowledgment between men who had stood together on a h

The decision to abandon the comfort of a secured fortress in favor of an uncharted voyage into hostile Southern waters was met not with hesitation by the Northern Wardens, but with the cold, stoic resolve of mountain wolves. For three days following the corruption of the harbor, the Northern siege smiths worked around the clock in shifts of forty. Armed with long-handled iron scrapers and barrels of concentrated lye forged from mountain ash, they scoured the hulls of the three dreadnoughts, stripping away the calcified black residue left by Morvath’s blood-magic. Where the dark rot had eaten into the outer planks, smiths drove broad iron braces directly over the petrified ironwood, sealing the seams with hot pitch and dragon-scale resin.By the dawn of the fourth day, the Vaelen's Revenge, the Frost-Claw, and the Iron Serpent sat high in the water, their black sails unfurled and snapping in the bitter coastal wind.Up on the elevated quarterdeck of the fla
