Kate’s POV

I stepped out of my car and shut the door behind me. My heels clicked against the pavement as I walked toward the black-tinted car parked a few feet ahead.

I glanced around before knocking twice on the passenger-side window. The door unlocked almost immediately. I slipped inside and pulled it shut behind me.

Mr. Blackwood sat in the back seat, his eyes hidden behind a black tinted glasses. “You said you know how I can get my money back?” he asked.

I nodded. “Yes.”

From the rearview mirror, I watched his eyebrows rise before a low chuckle escaped his lips.“How long have you liked him?”“His mother chose me to be his wife, but the day he asked me to marry him, I said no because I thought he would catch on to our plans and have a reason to fire me.” I paused. “I actually

Ava’s POVI slowly pulled away from Sophia’s embrace and turned my face away, pretending to focus on the television. Sophia glanced at me, then at him. A small, knowing smile tugged at her lips before she rose from the sofa and walked out of the room. The silence she left behind seemed louder than the television. He sat down on the spot Sophia had vacated, and for a long minute, neither of us said a word. The glow from the television flickered across his face while I kept my eyes fixed on the screen, determined not to acknowledge him.Eventually, I pushed myself to my feet. I barely took a step before his fingers closed around my wrist.“Where are you going to?”I turned, and his blue eyes met mine. “To sleep.” I tried to pull free from his grip, but instead of releasing me, his grip tightened. With one smooth pull, he drew me toward him.I lost my balance and sank straight onto his lap. Heat rushed into my cheeks.“What are you doing?” I hissed, immediately trying to stand. He caught

Ava’s POV“Are you good?” Sophia’s voice pulled at the edge of my thoughts. I blinked and turned my attention toward her. Her eyes moved from the bright television screen to my face, studying me.I swallowed and tucked my hands between my thighs, forcing myself to settle into the couch. “Yeah!”I turned back to the television. I had no idea what I was watching. The characters moved across the screen, their voices filling the room, but none of it registered. Every few minutes, my eyes betrayed me, sliding toward the doorway before I quickly dragged them back to the television. I hated myself for it.“Are you sure?”I finally looked at Sophia and released another long breath. “Yeah…”Her brows drew together. “Cause you’ve been sighing a lot. Is there something on your mind?”“No… I’m good.” Another sigh escaped me before I could stop it. “I’m just a bit tired.”“Okay.”The room fell quiet again. I tried to focus on the television, but my mind had already wandered somewhere else. After

Vindell’s POVMy fingers kept moving across the laptop, clicking through files I wasn’t really reading. Every few seconds, my eyes betrayed me, sliding toward her before I could stop them.Ava sat across from me, completely engrossed in her laptop. Her hair spilled gracefully over her shoulders, framing her face. Her lips were painted a bright shade of red, and every time my eyes landed on them, something tightened in my chest. Since the kiss, we’d been doing nothing more than coexisting together.Neither of us had mentioned it. Not once. Yet somehow, we kept finding ourselves in each other’s space more than usual whenever we were home. She had started slowing down whenever we ate together, stretching our meals into something longer than they needed to be. Sometimes, she’d disappear into the kitchen and return with little treats, casually dropping them beside me whenever I was buried in work. And recently, we’d started watching movies together in the cozy living room upstairs. It had

Peter’s POVIt was already dark by the time I locked up my shop for the night. I slipped the key into my pocket and rubbed my tired eyes before making my way toward my car.I had barely pulled out my keys when a car suddenly parked directly in front of me, Honked!.I flinched and instinctively took a step back, its headlights blazed straight into my face, forcing me to raise a hand to shield my eyes. I squinted through the glare as the driver’s door opened.A tall, elegant woman stepped out. Her long, dark hair fell over her shoulders as she shut the door behind her. She flashed me a broad smile and started walking toward me with confident, measured steps. She stopped a few feet away and stretched out her hand. “Hi… my name is Katherine. I’m a friend of Ava.”My eyes narrowed at the last word. I looked her over before reluctantly taking her hand and giving it a brief shake.“Can we go somewhere and talk?”“Umm… maybe another day. I just closed from work and would like to rest.” I turn

Ava’s POVI walked into Mom’s room just as Dr. Ray finished his examination. He pulled the stethoscope away from her chest and straightened, while Peter stood quietly in the corner, his arms folded across his chest. I slipped inside without interrupting and moved to stand beside him.My eyes followed Dr. Ray as he tucked away the rest of his equipment. He finally lifted the stethoscope, and draped it around his neck before walking toward us.“Well, in no distant time, she should be getting discharged,” he said, giving my shoulder a reassuring pat.My eyes widened.“Really?” The excitement burst out of me before I could contain it. “Thank you so much.”“You’re welcome.” He gave Peter a brief nod before walking out.The moment the door closed behind him, I rushed toward Mom and wrapped my arms around her. “Mom!”She laughed softly as I hugged her tighter, and for a few seconds, I simply held her. The woman who had spent so much time lying helplessly in that hospital bed was finally going
