The seer’s scream still echoed in my head hours later.

‘Two threads pulled.’

‘One thread bleeding.’

I didn’t know what it meant, not completely, but I could feel it. The second bond hadn’t just flared—it was anchoring itself inside me. Kael’s mark had burned, but Thorne’s left something deeper. Wilder.

I could still feel him under my skin.

I hadn’t gone back to my room.

Instead, I wandered until my feet carried me to the garden. I wasn’t sure what I planned to do—until I saw her.

Celina was alone near the back gardens, leaning against the stone fence, twirling something silver in her hand.

A blade. Of course.

I stepped into view.

She didn’t look surprised.

“Come to finish what your wolves started?” she said dryly.

“You knew,” I said. “About the bonds. About what I am.”

She smiled like it was obvious. “Of course I knew. I’ve always known. I just didn’t expect you to be stupid enough to pull two.”

I clenched my fists. “You’ve been watching me. Spying.”

The silence that followed was heavy. The kind that presses against your ribs and steals the air from your lungs. For a long moment, he didn’t move. He didn’t speak. His eyes were fixed on me, unblinking, as if he was trying to decide whether he’d actually heard me say the words or if his mind was playing tricks on him.“Rory…” His voice was hoarse, almost broken, like gravel underfoot. “Do you even understand what you’re asking me?”“Yes.” My answer came fast and steady, even though my heart was slamming in my chest. “I know exactly what I’m asking; besides, we’ve done it before.”His jaw tightened, the muscle ticking as he took a step back, putting a sliver of distance between us. “You’re asking me to cross a line I can’t uncross.”“I’m asking you to help me survive.” The words tumbled out before I could stop them. &

The words were out before I could stop them. Sharp. Clipped. Laced with every ounce of venom I’d been swallowing for weeks.Celina froze, her painted lips parting in mock surprise. Around us, the room went so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears. My pulse was a war drum, a thundering echo in my chest.“I’m sorry, was that too hard for you to hear?” I added, unable to stop myself. My voice trembled, not with fear, but with the adrenaline surging through me.Her eyes narrowed, the perfect curve of her brow twitching just enough for me to see I’d hit a nerve. That small victory lit a spark in my gut.“You forget your place, Rory,” she said softly, but the steel in her tone was unmistakable.“No,” I shot back, taking a step toward her. “You’ve forgotten mine.”Gasps rippled through the small crowd gathered in the council chamber. Servants exchanged uneasy

“Let me go!” My voice broke, the tears burning hot as they slid down my cheeks. “There’s nothing left for me here, nothing!”“Shut up,” he growled, his voice thick with anger and something else… something raw. “You think I’ll just stand here and watch you throw yourself away? Over him?”My sobs came in jagged bursts, my chest aching. “You don’t understand,”“I understand more than you think,” he snapped, spinning me to face him. His eyes were molten gold, burning straight into mine. “You’ve lost a child. You’ve been betrayed. But you’re still breathing. And as long as you’re breathing, they don’t win.”His words hit somewhere deep, but the pain was too fresh, too loud. “He chose her,” I whispered.“And now… everyone else will too.”Riven’s jaw flexed, his hands tighten

The courtyard was alive with whispers. I could feel them sticking to my skin like damp air, heavy and suffocating. Every step I took, I heard my name, softly, mockingly, passing from one tongue to another. It wasn’t the same fortress anymore. It wasn’t mine anymore.Kael was standing across the square with Celina, the sunlight catching on the strands of her hair like she’d been hand-painted by the gods. She was smiling, smiling, while one hand rested on her stomach in that protective, deliberate way.The way I used to hold mine.My chest tightened until I could barely breathe. I told myself not to look at him, not to see the quiet warmth in his eyes as he bent toward her. But my traitor’s heart did anyway, and it broke all over again.Celina’s gaze found mine across the space, and her lips curled, not in kindness, not even in feigned politeness, but in a slow, poisonous smirk that only I was meant to see.

His gaze flicked to Riven first, then to me. “You shouldn’t have been there.”“I had every right to be there,” I said, my voice brittle.“This isn’t about you right now—”“No, Kael. This has always been about me.” The words came out before I could stop them. “And you made your choice.”His jaw tightened. “You think I wanted this? You think I wanted her in this position? She’s pregnant, Rory. She—”“She’s playing you,” I snapped.Something flashed in his eyes, not guilt. Not shame. Anger. “You don’t know her like I do.”“That’s exactly the problem,” I whispered.Silence.Even Riven didn’t step in.Kael glanced between us once, then turned and walked away, his boots echoing against the stone until he was gone. That night, I sat alone in my chambers. I couldn’t eat.I just cried my eyes out. Couldn’t sleep. The voices from the council replayed in my head over and over. Luna-elect. Every syllable felt like a knife.A knock came at the door. I didn’t answer, but the door opened anyway.Thor

The corridors shook with the sound of boots.I knew before I even reached the main hall that something had happened.Riven’s voice echoed, sharp as steel. “Bring her forward.”I rounded the corner just in time to see them dragging Celina between two guards. Her wrists were bound, but she wasn’t fighting. She wasn’t even pretending to be afraid. No, she walked like a queen making her entrance, chin high, eyes sweeping over the gathered crowd. And then I saw him.Kael.He wasn’t leading her, but the moment our eyes met, I understood. He’d found her. And he hadn’t told me.The air between us was heavy. Unspoken accusations. Unspoken truths.“She was hiding in the east wing,” one guard reported to Elder Darius. “In the unused chambers behind the old archives.”Elder Darius’s expression hardened. “Search the rooms. Every corner.”But before the order could be carried out, a slow, deliberate clap rang through the hall. From the council’s bench, Elder Myrren rose. Tall. Imposing. And smiling
