Harley~

My head is spinning, and my heart feels like it is pounding right out of my chest, but it's not elephant brain syndrome this time. The short drive from the gas station to the police station wasn't sufficient for me to get a grip on what Nick's kisses do to me or the fact that Kyle had reached out to me.

My brother is yet another thing my father took from me. It had taken everything I had and the goddess's power not to take my brother's call. Kyle was my best friend; my childhood memories revolved around him doing his best to shield me from Ian's wrath, even though he was two years younger than I was.

Nick pulls the car to a stop in the Culver City station parking lot, which shares the space with the adjoining courthouse, and brushes his perfect lips across mine, making me dizzy all over again.

"You're teasing me, wolfman."

"I am not teasing; it implies that you don't get what is being offered, and I am all yours, Amante."

He gave me an 'I know what I am doing' grin before kissing my nose, unbuckling his seat belt, getting out of the car, and making his way around to my side.

Rae isn't sharing my euphoria. 'Can you focus on something other than our mate's lips?! This is a fine mess we are in, isn't it?! What are you going to do about Kyle Harley?'

'I don't know, Rae, I just need a minute to think.'

Thinking is suddenly hard to do as I place my hand in Nick's and he rubs his hand up my wrist, sending chills down my spine. He escorts me from the car and kisses my nose. The bright afternoon sun hits my eyes as he moves away, sending a wave of unease from my head to my feet. My shades are off my head and covering my eyes in a second.

The hair on the back of my neck stood up. I chanced a look around; it would seem that we had gained some attention from the busy parking lot. Nick shouldn't be affectionate towards me in public, but at the moment, I couldn't focus on the display enough to scold him.

It hit home for me that anyone around us could be Ian's bounty hunter. Kyle's call confirmed that my father had indeed found me and was trying to warn me. My gut is telling me Nick knew who had called, though I can't imagine how. I'm 100% certain that he saw the screen, yet he didn't question why a man was calling my phone.

Rae barged her way into my thoughts again. 'Will you listen to me now?! I told you we needed to leave LA. I told you that Nick would eventually find out about us. He works for the freaking FBI, for crying out loud! You need to call Kyle and come clean with Nick before we get in any deeper.'

'I will tell Nick in my time and in my way. Thank you very much. I'm also planning to call Kyle back. Now shut it, Rae!'

Adrenaline surges through, setting my nerves tingling, and for the first time, I see a future for myself that doesn't include running. Kyle's call and Nick's agreement to go with me were the last pieces of the puzzle. Now, I'm more determined than ever to end this chapter of my life. With my wolfman by my side, I tossed my hair over my shoulder and strutted across the asphalt, newfound badass and oddly erotic attitude in charge.

Walking into Culver County does not differ from walking into any other station in any other town. I'm not sure who's in charge of interior decoration for the government, but it's a universal concept designed not for comfort. The same commercial-grade carpet covers the floor. Culver County has interlinked double Cs printed on theirs; the matching blue-and-gold drapes hang over the double-pane bulletproof windows, letting you know there's no escape.

Police stations are the number one killer of verdure, dying houseplants of every variety, all because of neglect from overworked owners lining the half-walls of the cubiculae offices behind the desk. Mundane and bright white walls, covered with portraits of past chiefs and commissioners, are the cherry on top.

Nick and I exchange a glance. I wish I knew what he was thinking. We cross through the lobby toward the intake desk, where we present our badges.

"Detective Gibson, Agent Reins." I point at myself, then Nick. "Your captain is expecting us."

The intake deputy calls another officer, who leads Nick and me past the cubicles and down a hallway to a walk-in closet-sized captain's office. It's just my luck they'd be doing renovations. Captain Kenneth Sauls was waiting for us. He had to push the makeshift folding-table desk forward as he rose from his chair. He gestured for us to take a seat in front.

Nick doesn't fit; he has to sit sideways in the chair with his legs contorted. I look away so as not to laugh. A moment later, two more detectives enter the crowded space. The last one closed the door behind him, and it's not so funny anymore, though I know it is uncomfortable. Nick leans into me and rests his arm on the back of my chair.

"Detective Stone, Detective Rodriguez, this is Detective Gibson and Special Agent Reins." Captain Sauls made our introductions before seating himself.

The Culver Detectives pack themselves into the already crowded sardine can, and they sit in the folding chairs to my right. The surrounding air is going stagnant fast. I close my eyes as fear fills me, making my mind run with thoughts of being trapped somewhere dark and deep. Just breathe, Harley, you're ok, I repeat to myself; however, when I opened my mouth, I squeaked instead of speaking, which got Nick's attention.

"Have you made an ID of your victim?" I asked Sauls.

Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking

Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he

Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already

Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried

Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d

Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
