Nicholas~

Harley thought I wouldn't go with her? That was ludicrous. Even if I led the life she thinks I do, I would give it up, hell, if it took a trip to the moon to get my mark on her neck. I would strap on my damn space boots! Hadn't I made that clear? Nor do I like the idea of her keeping secrets from me.

'You're the pot calling the kettle black in the keeping secrets department; it's a two-way street, Nick. Harley needs to know who you are, and it must come from you. If she finds out any other way, you'll be lucky if she ever speaks to you again.'

'I have been thinking about that, Zeek. How would she find out? Kyle will not rat on me, and it's not like she's going back to Ian's place. Harley never has to know that Ian sent me.'

'Still, our mates deserve to know who they are. How will you explain to Harley that she is a powerful guardian without telling her you know about Ian and his part in this? You are the one who said we can't force them. If you don't tell her who she is, it's the same, and you know it.'

One thing about my wolf is that he causes me to think beyond what I don't want to admit. Since I don't know what will happen when Harley discovers the truth about herself, I haven't even tried to tell her. I'm not taking the chance of spending the rest of my life camping outside the door to an invisible lake. The quicker I can get Harley away from here, the less that becomes one of my options.

'I will find an Ian-free way to tell Harley all I know about the Guardians, which isn't much.'

My heart was thundering when I pulled back into the station parking lot and spotted Harley getting her bag out of her car. The last thing I wanted to do was return to the squad room, but I wasn't sure about the protocol. I should have done more research on how to be a cop, and chuckled at myself.

Who would have thought it? Me, a copper?! Fortunately, when I pull into the spot next to Harley's car, she opens the back passenger door, tosses her overnight bag onto the seat, and slips into the front beside me. I should probably say something, all 5-0.

What came out of my mouth instead? "I missed you, Amante." Zeek is making fun of me.

She pulls the seat belt around her. "And I missed you, too. Let's go, Wolfman."

Harley sets the GPS as we pull out of the parking lot, and when she's done, I take her hand, kiss the back, place it on my thigh, and rest my hand on top.

"Are you hungry? You haven't eaten all day."

"I suppose I am. You care for me so well. You should be careful; a girl could get used to it."

We hit the eastbound interstate and haul ass. About 30 minutes in, Harley is driving me insane with the little patterns she is drawing on my thigh, so I look over at her. She is staring out the window at the scenery flying by, and doesn't even know she has me ready to find a back road and have my way with her in the back seat.

"The answer is yes."

I know I have pulled her from her thoughts by the look on her face. "Answer to what?"

"I will go with you, Harley. Anywhere and anytime you get ready."

"Alright then, Wolfman, let's save these humans so that we can get the hell out of here."

Harley's phone rang. She took it out of her back pocket and almost immediately dropped it on the floorboard, as if it had turned into a venomous snake in her hand. Her hands were shaking, but she recovered, picked it up, and swiped the screen to reject the call. Before she could, I saw the screen, and it was Kyle. She turned it off and stuffed it into her purse.

"Who was that?" I raised an eyebrow at her.

The cat had taken her tongue, and she returned her eyes to the window. "Just a friend from work."

Though she doesn't remove her hand from my thigh, it goes still, and I don't like it. Just what I thought. Now, I suddenly have to take a piss, so I take the next exit off the interstate, and I pull into the nearest gas station.

"I'll be right back."

I go inside, head for the bathroom, pick a stall, lock the door behind me, and, pulling out my phone, I type. 'Harley is with me. I haven't told her yet, so she will not answer you.' I hit send, turned on airplane mode, grabbed some snacks, checked out, and headed back to the car.

Harley has already rerouted the GPS. "We don't have to get back on the interstate. Culver City is just a few miles away."

A smile crossed my face at the thought of the back roads as I handed her the bottle of soda and chips. She took them and then crooked her finger at me.

"Come here, Wolfman. "

I leaned into her. "Yes, Amante."

She placed the sweetest kiss on my lips. "Thank you."

"I don't know what I did, but if you tell me, I'll do it again." I went in for another.

She laughed as I brushed my lips to hers, and my heart jumped. "Just keep being the wonderful, honest, caring man that you are."

We need to go on that one; those things are far from who I am. My hand brushed a stray curl from her face. "I am glad you think so." I put on my seat belt and put the car in reverse.

It is less than 20 minutes before we pull into the combined Culver City police and courthouse building. This time, I get to open the car door for Harley, who then receives a kiss on the nose for her patience before we enter.

Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking

Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he

Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already

Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried

Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d

Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
