Harley~

The feeling of waking up in Nick's arms is almost as satisfying as his allowing me to have my way with him last night. I've found that I enjoy being in control of our lovemaking; I believe he does too. My intention was to retake my Wolfman this morning until my movements turned off my libido.

Instead of mounting him, I am pushing out of his embrace and making a mad dash to the bathroom. Nick follows me and sits down behind me in front of the toilet, waiting for the episode to pass. With a final cough and spit, it does, and I lean back into him, and he wipes my face with a hand towel.

"Good morning, Amante."

"Good morning, Nick. I didn't mean to wake you up."

"I've been awake for a while. Are you feeling better now?"

"It's too soon to tell."

Nick helps me to my feet, scoops me up, carries me back to the bed, and lays us down again. "I'm concerned about you, Harley. How about if we take the day off?"

"We can't, and you know it."

"Are you ready for breakfast then? You just emptied your already empty stomach."

Rae pushed forward, flashing him a look as if to tattletale on me, the little rat; he seems to understand. Why am I surprised?! I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to the idea of being completely bonded to Nick and Zeek. The thought sends a chill down my spine and heat to my core.

"Not yet. Can we stay here a little longer?"

"As long as you want."

That's all I needed to hear, and I snuggled my face into his chest, my happy place, with a contented sigh, wrapping my arms around him.

"I don't want to go back, Nick."

"We have to go back, Harley. Whatever this is, it isn't getting any better, and you must not miss the doctor's appointment tomorrow. Either we leave now for the hospital in my pack or back to Santa Monica soon, so what's it gonna be?"

My fingers tightened in his hair; that's not the ultimatum I wanted. "We're going back."

"So what happens next with the investigation?"

"We figure out who's doing the murders for Luccese. Once the stalker is no longer a threat, we can go, and the humans can clean up the mess."

"I'm liking the sound of that, Amante."

My phone rings, so I move to search for it, but Nick already has it in his hand, and the smile he gives me takes my breath away; he slips the green phone on and turns on the speaker.

"Yeah, Captain."

"Where is Detective Gibson?"

"We are having breakfast before hitting the road back there. She stepped into the little girl's room."

"You need to make a quick breakfast, Agent. We have Luccese's LA bank account. He has paid steadily under three names for months, and I'm willing to bet a fat puppy's ass that one of them is the stalker."

"10-4, Captain, we will be back soon."

Nick disconnected the line, tossed the phone on the nightstand, and rubbed his hands along my back. "It's going to be ok, Harley."

Nick got some of the breakfast he was talking about from me. We showered after making love, dressed, and loaded up. Nick has my hand on his thigh, with his hand on top, which has become his go-to position.

Being with Nick feels comfortable and safe; I've experienced nothing even close to it. It may be the serenity talking, but I decide to tell him about the lightning bolt, Lady. I could at least be honest with him about something. I hope he will not think that I have gone completely insane!

"Nick, can I tell you something?"

"Anything, Amante."

"It's gonna sound a little crazy, but I swear it's the truth."

"All ears over here, Harley."

"So, I took Rae out for a run about a week ago. We were swimming when Rae told me she sensed something watching us. The something turned out to be a water goddess." I looked at him, waiting for his laugh, but he wasn't even cracking a smile.

"Go on, Harley."

"She told me her name is Lauren, and that she knew my mother, Sabrina. Lauren told me I am a guardian."

"Of what?"

"A place called Sauther Lake. Do you believe me?"

"Yes, I do, Amante."

My heart is pounding in my chest as excitement rushes through me. "Have you ever heard of the lake or know how to get there?!"

"Of course, I've heard the legends of Sauther Lake, but I don't know where the lake is located."

I'd be blind not to see the wave of apprehension and worry come over Nick, only I couldn't figure out why.

"What's wrong, Nick?"

"Nothing at all, Amante. I'll do some research and see what I can find about your lake."

"Can I tell you something else?"

He glances over at me and squeezes my hand. "Nothing would please me more."

"I think I'm falling for you, Wolfman."

"I'll catch you on my way down, Amante."

Before I was ready, we pulled back into the Santa Monica police station. I gave Nick's hand a final squeeze and got out of the car. Captain Howard ushered us to the room I refer to as the closest from hell. At the table sat Belinda, Dr. Lyles, and Detectives Brock and Graves. Nick and I take a seat, and the Captain passes us the jackets across the table.

The folders contain Luccese's bank records and the profiles of our three suspects. The arrest record of the first guy, Tony Henderson, reads like a list of what to do to wind up behind bars. Everything from armed robbery to kidnapping, trafficking, and even some suspicion of rape charges, enough to get him on the registry.

I looked up from the file to my Captain. "They don't get any better, Detective; the next guy, Harold Conner, was out on the fucking payroll for burning his victim alive. What kind of dumbass judge would turn a sicko like him loose?"

Nick read from the last file that the third suspect, Steven Ballance, had spent most of his life in and out of mental institutions all over the state, then he glanced at me.

Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking

Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he

Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already

Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried

Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d

Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
