'I don't like this Harley!' 'Neither do I, Nick!' "Was CSI able to recover any boot prints from our crime scenes?" Harley asked. Captain Howard nods at her. "They did cast a few clear ones; it's a shot in the dark, but you should check them out once they dry. In the meantime, we need to cover the streets with these guys' ugly faces." While waiting for the print shop to send over the flyers the Captain wants us to distribute, I kept my eye on Harley, sitting at her desk, not enjoying the distance between us to maintain the pretense of humanity. However, it gives me a chance to process what she'd told me. It must have been a powerful guardian who came to Harley and me. I also know there must have been a reason beyond introducing herself. Perhaps they also know about Ian's plans for Harley and are trying to protect one of their own. It makes sense that Harley would have left out that part since Ian isn't supposed to exist; either way, it means I am running out of time. I'm sure the guardian will be back, and it wouldn't make any difference if Harley and I left tonight. There isn't a place I could take her where the guardian couldn't find her. On the positive side, at least she is letting me in. I'm feeling like the luckiest wolf on earth that I get to witness the powerful force of good magic my mate will become, and it also scares the hell out of me because I still don't know where I am supposed to fit in. 'She is falling in love with you, Nick, and I know you must feel it too. She-wolves don't leave their beloved unless he does something stupid, like try to deny her of her birthright.' 'I got it, Zeek! Find your sock, will you?' 'It needs to be soon, Nick.' 'Nick?' 'Yes, Amante.' 'I miss my wolfman.' 'I miss you too. Have I told you how much I enjoy hearing your voice in my head? She looks up at me, and my heart skips a beat. 'A couple of times, yeah, but I never tire of hearing it.' My phone rang. I took it out of my pocket and saw it was Kyle calling. 'I have to take this; it's the agency.' Man, it is hot as fuck in LA. A place in the mountains sounds better all the time. "Yeah, Kyle." "I have been waiting to hear from you. What is happening there?" "I am with Harley, and she is safe, and you were right about Luccese calling the shots here." "I didn't want to be. Maybe you should both get out of there. How did Harley take the news about Ian and the Lake?" "I haven't told Harley yet that Ian is involved. Since she is my mate, I hope I can avoid it somehow. But the guardian of Sauther Lake has already visited her. She asked me to help her find the place." "What did you tell her?" "That I would do some research, I don't know what to do." "You're worried you are going to lose her." "Yeah, I am. Either to the Lake or because of my part in all this." "I don't think even the guardians could override the moon goddess's will. Since you are her fated mate, Harley would decide whether to join them or you. Why not tell Harley I sent you? It's technically true. Have her call me, and I will back you up." Zeek is growling at me. It's just another lie, but I don't listen because I remember Harley's sadness when I pushed her about a sibling. "Ok, I will tell her tonight. For what it's worth, Kyle Harley loves you, and she misses her brother." 'Is everything ok, Nick?' "I've gotta go. Kyle Harley is calling for me." 'Yes, Amante.' A few moments later, we are all gathered back in the room that my Amante doesn't like. Her emotions shifted the moment the Captain closed the door, so my Amante is claustrophobic. I rested my arm on the back of her chair. The Captain sat with a deep sigh. "We will not ot get any help with the stalker's ID from the bank. The manager just informed me that Luccese set up the savings account online about two months ago, and no one has ever visited the bank or inquired about it since. However, the card linked to the account gets used several times a week at the bank's ATM." A wave of relief rolled off of Harley as if this were a good thing and easy to fix. "So, pull the bank's surveillance footage." "I have already, Detective; the problem is that the bank's cameras are on a 48-hour loop. There has been no activity on the card since the stalker went MIA a week ago." "Not here in Santa Monica, maybe; Culver City has a branch, I think." "They do; my aunt is the manager." Graves said. "I could ask her to look for the account discreetly." "It's worth a shot." Captain Howard distributes the flyers to Brock and Graves. "The plan is to put these three in a pressure cooker and see which one pops his top. Our stalker is going to get pretty nervous seeing his face plastered everywhere. When one gets nervous, one gets sloppy." "I think we should start on the bay and cover the piers first," Brock said. "A private boat is best for someone going and coming off the island if they don't want to be seen." "What about us, Captain?" Harley asked. Captain Howard focused on her. "You two will sit on the bank; according to Lucesse's bank records, today is the stalker's payday." 'What's a sit on?' 'A stakeout.' 'How long do those take?' She's giving me the moron look again. "We will keep in touch through the secure channel only. No phones; we still have a snake in the henhouse." The Captain rose and opened the door. Harley goes to her desk and gathers the pictures, files, and water bottle from the drawer. "Ready, Agent?" 'To have you to myself, Amante? Oh, yes.' "Yes, ma'am." I gave her a salute and took the files and the bottle from her.Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking
Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he
Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already
Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried
Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d
Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
