JAYCE BECKETT

Something was utterly, completely, and totally wrong with me!

Since when had I started feeling like I'd been electrified, like a spark of life had been injected into my very being, upon hearing Renato's voice?

Had I just been desperately lonely, craving human connection like a parched traveler in the desert, and had been dying to hear from him all day, every minute, every second?

Whatever that bewildering, confounding sensation was, I really, really, REALLY hoped it had absolutely nothing to do with feelings, because if it did, I was in trouble, deep, deep trouble.

"I'm fine," I sighed, trudging up the stairs to the rooftop, the cool breeze a welcome balm for my frazzled nerves.

"Where are you?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

"Still at the office," he replied, his voice carrying the faintest hint of frustration. "Do you need something? I can send someone to get it for you?"

I could hear a muffled voice in the background, a man's voice, and my brow furrowed with curio

JAYCE BECKETT I couldn't help but exhale a sigh of relief as the tension eased from my shoulders. The thought of Renato walking in and finding Cole here sent shivers down my spine. I honestly didn't want to imagine what would have happened."Hey?" Renato said, closing the door behind him, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. I forced a weak smile, attempting to conceal the anxiety brewing inside me. The smile faltered, and I let it fade."Hi..." I trailed off, my heart still racing like a jackrabbit against my chest. Renato's gaze lingered on me, and I shifted uncomfortably from the bathroom door."You're here?" I asked, stating the obvious."I guess I am," Renato shrugged, giving me a once-over. His eyes roamed my face, searching for something."Is everything alright?" he asked, his tone laced with concern."Of course... Of course, sure," I stammered, nodding my head frantically. My smile felt more like a grimace.Renato's eyes never left mine as I moved away from the bathroom door, m

JAYCE BECKETT Cole's chest heaved as he panted heavily, his breaths coming in ragged gasps. I feared he was on the brink of a panic attack, his eyes bloodshot and rimmed with red, veins bulging from his forehead like they were about to burst. He grasped his hair with both hands, his fingers knotted in the strands as he stared down at my phone on the floor, his gaze fixed on it with an unnerving intensity. The screen was cracked, but Renato's name still glared at us in bold letters, a taunting presence that seemed to fuel Cole's fury.If only I had left his name as it was before, I thought, regret gnawing at me like a festering wound. But it was too late now. Cole already knew the truth."Renato Marino," Cole whispered the name again, his voice barely audible, his eyes never leaving my phone until the call dropped and the screen went blank. Then, his gaze shifted to me, and I saw the rage in his eyes give way to hatred, a cold, calculated malevolence that made my skin crawl."You

JAYCE BECKETT Cole's weight bore down on me, crushing me. He showed no signs of pulling away, his body molded to mine as a deep grunt rumbled through his throat, his grip on my waist tightening. His breath whispered against my chest, sending shivers down my spine. "Cole, is everything—" My question was cut short as his body tensed against mine, as if he'd suddenly become aware of our proximity. "You cleaned up after my mess?" he murmured weakly, pulling away from me.His gaze swept across my living room, and he shook his head, a mixture of regret and self-loathing etched on his face. "I'm sorry, I—I wasn't thinking straight that day. I shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't have react like that." He breathed out, rubbing his neck.I stared at him, my incredulity evident. Was an apology really enough to make up for everything he'd done? I let out a sigh, discreetly shoving my left hand into my pocket to hide the ring on my finger.Knowing about the ring would only enraged him even

JAYCE BECKETT As I stood in front of my front door, I let out a monumental sigh of relief, the weight of the world seemingly lifting off my shoulders. I fumbled for the key, my phone still clamped to my ear like a lifeline. "Yes, I'll be back to the hospital soon," I muttered into the phone, my eyes scanning the war-torn landscape of my living room. The furniture was overturned, cushions were shredded, and debris littered the floor; it looked like a tornado had ripped through the space. How could I have forgotten what had happened just before I got called to the hospital?"I'll just grab a few of his essentials; clothes, toys, books... you don't have to come help me, Renato." I reassured him, my voice laced with exhaustion. Apart from the fact that I needed him to stay with Curtis at the hospital before I came back, I couldn't have Renato here. He'd be bound to wonder why my apartment looked like this, and I was afraid I wouldn't have a plausible explanation, because telling him

RENATO MARINO It had been over a week, and this infuriating child still hadn't warmed up to me. At first, I thought he was just being a brat due to the potent medication coursing through his tiny system, but now that he was fully aware of his surroundings and recovering by the day, his attitude towards me remained as glacial as ever. I could tell this kid genuinely despised me. Not that he was a sweetheart to begin with, but this was different."What?" Curtis grumbled, his tiny eyebrows pinched together in a scowl as he crossed his little arms over his chest, unleashing a withering stare that he probably thought was lethal. "What is what?" I scoffed, leaning my back against the wall, refusing to back down from this absurd glaring competition with a six-year-old. It had been ages since I'd dealt with a toddler, but this one was the most infuriating I'd ever met. Not even Marcelo had given me this much trouble when he was a kid."You're glaring," Curtis pointed out, his small face
