Chapter 5

Penulis: Lynette Woods
Jack hovered at the door before finally pushing it open—then nearly stumbled back when he saw her.

"Alice? You've got Corrosion Sickness?! Since when?"

Her eyes shot wide. Panic. She grabbed his arm fast.

"No, no, you've got it wrong. I was asking for a friend. He couldn't find anything online, so I figured I'd ask a healer directly."

Jack exhaled, all relieved. Took her hand like nothing happened.

"Then ask Sophia. She's a healer too."

Alice gave him that sugar-sweet nod.

I smiled, shook my head.

'Girl's got no shame.'

She locked eyes with me, and Jack finally noticed I was there. He pulled her into some weak-ass hug.

"Sophia, since you've made your choice, I'll be straight. Alice is carrying my pup. Let's go to the Elders and break the bond."

Alice ripped away from him, horrified.

"No! You can't! I didn't come here to wreck anything—Jack, don't make me the bad guy! I just wanted a pup. I didn't mean to ruin what you two had..."

I laughed. Out loud. Couldn't help it.

  • Break the Bond, Burn the Bridge   Chapter 10

Alice lost the pup—and the healers said she'd never carry again.Jack went straight to the Enforcers, claiming Alice had infected him on purpose. Then he stormed the Elders' Council, demanding a forced rejection and payout. It was like Jack had finally found the perfect excuse. He kept trying to rope me in, whining about revenge, begging me to help him bleed Alice dry.I shut him out—and gave the Elders the real story.Turns out, Jack had paid rogue wolves to fake his war-hero image in the Silvermoon Guard. The Elders didn't even get to vote. The Enforcers cuffed him on the spot. Locked away, finally.I visited Alice. She thought I came to gloat. But once I told her what Jack had done, she just... shut down.Days later, she handed me the final proof I needed to bury him. That sealed it.When I copied the video from the car, I caught him meeting a masked rogue. That's when I knew—Jack's whole image was smoke and mirrors.Still, I hadn't nailed down the proof—until now.Credi

Alice strutted down the aisle like the pack owed her applause, bouquet clutched tight, soaking in every stare.Jack grabbed her hand and kissed it.The Moon Priest joined their hands. They locked eyes, started reciting vows under the Moon Goddess. Then Alice cut in.She reached up, brushed Jack's cheek. The crowd leaned forward—half expecting a gender reveal, half bracing for drama."Jack, we just vowed everything. From now on, I'm yours. I need to tell you something—I'm sick. Might need meds forever. Will you take care of me?"Jack nodded like a wolf on the edge, eyes wet, crushing her into his arms."You, Alice... you're everything. What is it? I'll protect you—always."She dabbed at fake tears, shot me a smug look from the stage, kissed his cheek like she'd already won. Then, all serious:"I have Corrosion Sickness...""What? You've got Corrosion Sickness?" Jack's voice cracked. "No—no, Alice, this isn't some sick joke!"He yanked his hand back like her skin burned him.

  • Break the Bond, Burn the Bridge   Chapter 8

While the Enforcers worked the crowd, questioning wolves one by one, I spotted Alice. Eyes darting, scanning faces—searching.Jack hovered near Darren's family, fake-sobbing into a tissue while sneaking frantic looks around.Their eyes met. Brief, sharp. Then they split, fanning out."My deepest condolences," Jack said smoothly, handing Darren's widow his card."The Healers' Council will make sure the one responsible pays—with their head if needed," he said.Once the Enforcers wrapped up the first sweep, they hauled the key players to the station.I followed, calm and steady—until Alice spun around, jabbing a finger at me."It was her!" she shrieked. "She always bragged about being the best healer in the pack! That title had to be bought! Anyone who screws up a basic stitch and kills a wolf deserves to pay. Off with her head!"Jack piled on, voice cold as ice. "Sophia, I'll burn every favor I've got to take you down. Silence won't save you. Rot in prison. Repent."An Enforcer

I hit the OR early, slid my phone into a hidden nook.Last time, Darren had cried like a scared pup before going under. I held his hand. Comforted him. Stupid. This time, I scanned every inch, burned into memory how my own colleagues turned on me in court.Checked the tools. Then the corners.Found it.Filthy rag, crammed under the table, stinking of setup.Slipped it in my pocket. When the other healers and assistants strolled in to prep, I stayed cool, gave them a nod.Said I forgot something. Took the rag straight to my office, locked it away.Scrubbed back in. Reset.Same damn faces. Same traitors.I locked in—no drifting into courtroom flashbacks. This time, I stayed till the bitter end. No early exits. Not even mine.Last time? I was wrecked—pregnant, exhausted. Left before the final stitch. Let someone else close.Didn't know they were all Jack's puppets.Looking at those wolves I'd fought beside, all I felt was ice.Spent more time with them than with Jack. Thoug

In my past life, he killed me. That pain? That fury? Still claws into my dreams every damn night. For a few days, my phone stayed quiet. I figured Jack had finally backed off. Thought I'd get to breathe easy until the Elders' Council hearing. Then he showed up at my hotel.Dressed like staff, he shoved me into the wall the second I cracked the door.My back lit up in pain as he stormed in, ripping through the place like a rabid wolf—tossed open drawers, upended my suitcase."Done snooping?" I said. "Good. Now get the hell out.""What are you doing holed up in a hotel like this?! Where is he?! I can't believe you masked his scent! I'm not leaving till he shows!"He swung at the table—my thermos flew. Soup exploded across his leg.Yelping, he bolted to the bathroom and cranked the cold water."You might wanna get that checked at the hospital," I called. "While you're there, maybe run a blood screen."He cut the water. Turned slowly, glaring like I'd stabbed him."I came here t
