Jane's POV

I don't like the blood moon festivals because it leaves the whole house in chaos. Unfortunately, today is just the second day and we have one more day to go.

Every corner of the house buzzed with activity, footsteps echoing across the hallways, trays clinking loudly, servants dashing back and forth like headless birds. Festival season was always like this, hectic, exhausting, and never-ending but blood moon festivals were the worst.

I’d barely gotten four hours of sleep in two days. And now, the floor sparkled from my fifth round of mopping, my back ached, and the head maid had just asked me to take fresh towels to the guest wing.

Still, I kept going because people like me don't have a choice. We have to work hard to earn our keep.

But since last night, my mind has not been working well.

Last night something happened. Or maybe it didn’t happen. Maybe it was a dream because how would Alpha Liam, the aspiring president, offer me a job? A man with stormy eyes full of pain and history. I remembered the way his voice sounded in my ears. How he asked him to lay beside him until he fell asleep.

I laid beside him because I had no choice. I was scared that he might report me to Alpha Theo.

Then I woke up this morning in my own room with zero sign of him, like it never happened.

I wasn’t looking for him because his appearance screams danger. The blood moon was enough trouble, I don't want to add Alpha Liam to the list of my troubles.

I was lost in my thoughts until I heard the sharp crash of glass hitting tile, followed by the sound of it shattering.

I winced and slowly, I turned toward the source of the mess.

“Mia,” the name sounded like poison.

Mia is the girlfriend of alpha Theo. She wasn't his fated mate but she was glued to his like a pet. He likes her too with what I see them do but alpha Theo was another breed of a man. Well, they make a perfect couple because Mia was a different breed too.

Her red dress hugged her body too tightly for comfort, and her red lip stick was so much that you would think she dipped it into blood. In her hand, the stem of a now broken wine glass. And on her face was a smug, satisfied smile.

She had done it on purpose, even a kid could tell.

I tried to turn back to my business but Mia is just Mia, another incarnate of trouble.

“You,” she said with mock innocence. “Clean it up, maid.”

I took a deep breath, biting down on the irritation rising in my chest. “Mia… you know I just mopped that place.”

“And so?” she shrugged. “If I say clean, you clean.

“Don’t complain, just obey. That's your work, maid,” she said, laying emphasis on the last word.

I dropped the mop and straightened up, looking her in the eye. I wasn’t looking for trouble, but I wasn’t a doormat either. I have the right to defend myself especially if I'm being bullied.

“What if I say I’m not cleaning it?” I asked, keeping my voice as calm as possible. “You created the mess… on purpose. You should clean it.”

Her smile dropped. Her eyes flared with challenge.

“What did you just say?” she spat

“You heard me clearly, Mia.” I answered with a calm voice.

“Look at you,” she hissed. “Feeling all mighty lately. You think you're special because of that crap the moon goddess said? That you’re the true mate of Alpha Theo?”

My stomach twisted when she said it. I've never for once considered myself as alpha Theo's mate despite the moon goddess confirmation. Who wants to mate a maid with no origin?

“That has nothing to do with this,” I said firmly. “I’m not even running after him like you do.”

Her nostrils flared as anger etched on her baked face. “Are you trying to say I’m throwing myself at him? Are you insinuating that I'm a cheap whore?”

“I never said that. Don’t put words in my mouth, Mia,” I said, defending myself.

“You’re a lowlife,” she sneered, stepping closer. “You don’t know your place. I can see it in your eyes that you’re looking for a way to seduce Alpha Theo. But I swear, I won’t let it happen. It won’t work, Jane.”

I folded my arms. “I’m not interested in Alpha Theo. I’m not concerned about any prophecy. I just want a peaceful life. That’s it.”

“Liar,” she spat. “Who doesn't want to be the mate of one of the most powerful alphas in the North?”

“I don't want to be,” I said.

“Liar,” she repeated. “Girls like you pretend to be humble, but deep down, you’re desperate. Pathetic little thing.”

The words stung, but I refused to show it. I don't want her to have the satisfaction that she hurt me.

“If you’re done, can you leave me alone? I have work to finish,” I said, keeping my voice even.

But she wasn’t done. She had time to bully me but she didn't have time to get a proper job that would keep her busy.

“No,” she said. “I’m not done with you. And I'm not going anywhere until you clean up the broken glass. With your bare hands.”

My eyes widened. “Are you out of your mind?” I snapped.

“Oh, now you have a voice?” she laughed, her tone sharp and cruel. “You think being the Alpha’s so-called fated mate gives you the right to talk back?”

“With or without the prophecy, as a member of this pack, I have the right to talk. It is called freedom of speech. And I'm telling you to clean up your mess because I won't do it for you.”

“Wow,” she said with a scoff. “You are full of surprises, ain't you?”

Before I could respond, a voice cut through the hallway like a blade.

“What did I hear you say?” the familiar voice echoed through the walls. And the air changed instantly. It became cold and still. Mia and I turned at the same time.

Alpha Theo stood at the end of the hallway, towering and furious, his eyes locked on Mia. He wore a black shirt rolled up at the sleeves and dark blue slacks, looking like a storm on the verge of erupting.

“I don't like to repeat myself,” he said, this time, his eyes were on me.

I knew I was in trouble.

  • Breaking the Alpha's curse    Jane

Jane “You are a curse in human form,” his words were still ringing in my head as I sat on the edge of my bed. Night came so fast and I was supposed to go to him. But I couldn’t go, not after what he said. He wants me to stay away from him after telling me I was his pain relief. What kind of a weirdo was he? He called me a curse. His words clutched my chest tightly. If he saw me as a curse, why did he buy me from Alpha Theo? Why did he refer to me as his pain relief? When I thought I was starting to understand him, he insulted me and pushed me away. So I've decided not to go to him tonight. He can't push me away and expect me to draw to him again. Never. He might have bought me and save me from disgrace but his insults are more than I can bear. Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t expect the door to burst open. But it did. And the worst part was Alpha Liam strode in like a storm, his eyes blazing.“You didn’t come,” he said simply, like he couldn’t quite believe it.Shocked to see him,

  • Breaking the Alpha's curse    Jane

JaneAs I walked through the hallway, my mind drifted to the old book I found in Alpha Liam's study. That book had something I should know. The way I reacted to that book was not ordinary. The way it seemed to hum in my veins. I needed to see it again. I needed to understand why it felt like a part of me. It could answer my questions, if not all of them. With determination, I went to his study again. I shouldn't have gone back there. But something kept pulling me there. I don't know if it was curiosity or a supernatural connection. The door creaked as I stepped inside. The scent of him still lingered in the air, strong with something darker. It felt like a warning but I didn't adhere to it. Instead, I moved swiftly. I moved toward the shelf where I’d first seen the burnt book, my fingers trembling as I reached for the stack. I searched through the first stack, then the second and found nothing. “It should be here,” I told myself as I searched through it again. “Looking for somet

  • Breaking the Alpha's curse    Jane

JaneAs I stirred awake, I looked around me as the memories of last night flooded my mind. Alpha Liam! I jumped up to see him but to my greatest disappointment, I woke up alone.I was on the bed and the sheets beside me were cold. His scent lingered faintly in the air but the alpha was nowhere to be found.A sudden tightness gripped my chest. I wanted to know if he slept well. To know if his pain had relieved him. To hold him this morning if he still needed me to. But he left. He left before I woke up. I got up slowly, pulled on my dress, and stepped into the hallway. Because he didn't wake up beside me doesn't mean I can't check up on him in his room. So with determination, I went to his room. Another wave of disappointment washed over me when I got there. His room was empty, the fireplace was dying. Where would he be this morning?Maybe his study.I turned and made my way to his study, hoping he’d be there buried in books. But he wasn't there either. Where was he? I wondered as

  • Breaking the Alpha's curse    Alpha Liam

Alpha Liam's POV I woke before the sun did. Even before the birds started singing. Before anyone in the castle stirs awake. The room was still as I turned to the person beside me. Last night's event flooded my mind like a wave. My heart ache started, I dragged myself to Jane's room, I kissed her and slept beside her. Despite the storm in my mind, the room was too quiet. If not for the sound of her soft breathing beside me, I wouldn't have believed that last night happened. She was curled beside me, her head resting near my chest, her hand lightly over my shirt, as if it belonged there. And the most unsettling part was that it felt like it did. My heart, the most traitorous thing, beat more steadily than it had in months. The ache that usually clawed at my ribs during the night was gone. It was silenced all because she had touched and held me.I can't believe that I crawled back to her after doing everything in my power to stay away. I don't know why things just end up the way I d

  • Breaking the Alpha's curse    Jane

Jane's POV I thought the dream had ended until something gripped my leg.It was hard and desperate. Tight enough to take me from the dream world to the real world. I jolted upright, screaming as my heart was still racing from the dream and the grip.As I opened my eyes, it was no longer smoke or fire that surrounded me. It was darkness. Real and heavy darkness. The type that blind your eyes and heart at once. Quickly, I turned on the lamp beside my bed. And there, at the edge of my bed, was a figure. My breath stopped as I saw Alpha Liam. He was on his knees, clutching my leg like an anchor, his face masked with pain. His whole body trembled slightly, and his muscles became tense. One of his arms was wrapped tightly around his chest, the other grasping my thigh as if I was the only thing keeping him grounded.“Jane,” he said, groaning. The low, ragged sounds pulled from his throat scared the hell out of me. The way his head hung down, the way he clutched his chest reminded me of

  • Breaking the Alpha's curse    Jane

Jane's POV I stood in front of Alpha Liam’s door, my hand hovering over the handle. Should I go in? Would he want to see me after chasing me out like a dog? Was I ready to face him? To be honest, I was mad at him for yelling at me. One minute, he is normal, the next, he is abnormal. He acts like someone with bipolar issues. I turned the handle and stepped inside, bracing myself for whatever happens. He was already sitting on the edge of the bed, shirt half-buttoned, hair still damp from a shower. His eyes were on me the second I entered. Surprisingly, it was not cold or dark. It was like he was waiting for me to come.“I'm here to sleep with you,” I said without thinking. He patted the space beside him. “Sit.”Now he wants me to sit beside him. What is going on with this man? Did carrying the weight of a pack cause him to have a twisted brain?I hesitated for just a moment, then crossed the room and sat beside him, not too close, but close enough to feel the heat radiating from hi
