LOGINSELENA
A fated mate is a dumb concept anyway. I'm still thinking about that while I'm on my knees, scrubbing the toilet in the common room bathroom in one of the towers. At least I don't have to clean all the suites, just the public toilets. Sweat pours down my face. I've changed into a pair of cutoff jeans shorts and a gray tank top. It's particularly hot in this bathroom, so I have the door propped open. I hear someone clear their throat and look up. There's a guy standing there, one of the inner circle here. His hair is long, black, and wavy, and he has a septum piercing. His t-shirt is covered in different colors of paint. He's cute. “Yeah?” I say. “Women's room's across the hall if you want to use that while I'm still cleaning this one. I don't know why they aren't unisex.” He smiles to himself. “I don't need to use the restroom. I'm just wondering what you're doing.” I look him straight in the eyes. “I'm doing my taxes, can't you tell?” He barks out a laugh, like he's startled. “I'm sorry, forgive me, my name is Raven and I'm at your service.” “Hello Raven, I'm Selena. What did you mean?” He comes closer into the room and holds out his hand for me to take. I instinctively take it, still wearing my disgusting rubber gloves. He takes no notice, helping me to my feet like a princess. “I'm afraid, and I really regret to tell such a pretty girl this, that you're being hazed.” I strip off my gloves and throw them into my bucket of supplies. “Aw, Hell. You have a housekeeper, don't you?” “A whole fleet of them. Who put you up to this? Was one of them a blonde Alpha who could pass for a Russian supermodel?” “Amber. And the other one was named Riley,” I snitch without an ounce of shame. He nods. “Tell me this, sweetheart, did you mention any of this to Dominic?” That rat bastard. “He knew.” I lean back hard against the sink, suddenly unable to fully support my own weight. “I didn't mention it. He did.” “Okay. Thank you for being brave enough to tell me. Let me take care of this. Consider yourself a free agent until your classes tomorrow. Maybe stick close to your room for now.” “Oh you don't have to–” “I'm an Alpha, sweetheart, and a fellow Alpha misbehaved. It's my job and my honor to take care of this for you, little Omega.” He kisses my hand. “Th-thank you,” I tell him, feeling heat flood my cheeks and turn them bright red. “You are very welcome.” And with that, he's gone. I stash the cleaning supplies back where I found them, then take off upstairs, hitting the vending machine on the way. I take the longest shower possible, washing my massively long and thick hair and scrubbing my skin pink. I think about Raven and feel funny inside. Dominic may be my mate, but he hasn't claimed me, so the mate bond isn't solidified. And Raven made me feel prettier than I've ever felt, whereas Dominic makes me think he hates me and everything about me. No one has ever defended my honor before. I get out of the shower and dry off, taking Raven’s suggestion and locking my door, holing up in a pair of leggings and a giant fuzzy sweater, with a single cup pod coffeemaker and a bunch of snacks from the student union. I got a whole grocery bag filled with bananas, cereal, oat milk, microwave popcorn, snack mix, plastic cutlery, bowls, and a few frozen Thai dinners. I turn on the TV that came with the suite filled with streaming apps and start an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I've become addicted to it since Nox let me have his second TV. I put a Thai curry in the microwave and settle in with a packet of M&Ms and a soda from the vending machine, and my plushie black cat, Meowlificent. I got her with last Christmas's gift from Luna Margaret, $200 to use on clothes. It went to clothes…and Meowlificent. DOMINIC I'm rounding the corner, expecting to see a barely dressed Selena on her knees for me, when I find something very different. “What in the fuck do you think you're doing, Dom? And was it Tris's idea?” Raven. One of my best friends. And before Billie, the conscience of the Underground. “She told you.” “She told me. And nothing, I mean nothing, is to happen to her in retaliation. This stops now. Act like an Alpha, not a boy.” He gets in my face. Raven, one of my best friends. “That sweet little Omega is under our protection here, and that is where she will be. Not in danger of us. Who do you think you are, the Big Bad Wolf?” “Maybe,” I say, just to provoke him. He shakes his head, disappointed in me. “She's an innocent, Dom.” “She's hiding something.” “Whatever it is, it's hers to hide.” “Bullshit. I'm finding out what it is.” “No, you're not. Because you'll be too busy apologizing to Billie after I tell her everything I just found out. And I am telling her, Dom.” “Fucking godamnit Raven, have some loyalty.” “Don't ever talk to me about loyalty, Dominic.” And he's gone. Shit. So I do the stupid thing and go up to the attic to barge in on Selena. Except she's somehow locked the door. “Selena,” I call out sternly, with just a bit of dominance. “No,” says the voice through the door. “Selena…” “If you care about being a good guy at all, don't make me a slave, Dominic.” And that's when I realize how close I came to using my Alpha voice against her. Something I abhorred. Something I'd never done. I back away from the door and go back to my new room just beneath hers, locking myself in. I won't be her monster tonight.DOMINIC“It's okay baby, you don't have to do anything until you're ready. Tell us all to go to hell if you need to.”I hold Selena against my chest and wish for the power to make it all go away. I can protect her now, keep her from being exploited, and I will. But I wish it had never happened to her in the first place. The humiliation. The pain. The hopelessness. No wonder she seems untouchable; she's gone beyond this plane to a place where they can't hurt her. She seems untouchable because a part of her is protected from their degradations and nurtured on hope and sarcasm. I see her now.I pick her up in my arms in a bridal carry and take her to the immaculate bedroom. Setting her down on the bed, I sit facing her and pull her into my arms, kissing her warm, soft mouth. She kisses me back passionately, grabbing onto my shoulders as if her life depended on it. I unbutton my shirt and pull it off, then I pull her top up over her head. I thrust my fingers into her soft, thick black
SELENA“Are you ever going to tell me where we're going to?” I ask Dominic, who is packing his suitcase. Mine are ready by the door.“I suppose now is a good time. We are going to Tristan's family's cottage in the mountains, a tiny house meant for just two people to get away to.”“That sounds amazing. Is that why we're taking that giant Jeep?”“We'll need the snow tires and four wheel drive,” he tells me. “But the view is worth it.”I try to imagine snowy mountains, ski lodges, hot tubs, and hot chocolate. It seems beyond my reach. Something I would have never been allowed to go to. But now, it's a special treat from my boyfriend.Bliss like this can't last. But I dive headfirst into it anyway, determined to take advantage of it for as long as possible. All I want is to revel in this love. No more thoughts of the outside world, outside pressures. Just Dominic and me, together in our nest.So that's what I plan to do for the next week. It's Fall Break, and we have all the time in the w
DOMINIC“Selena,” I whisper. We're lying in her bed. She's awake with her eyes closed. I'm leaning over her, caging her with my arms.“Yes, Dominic,” she whispers back.I nip at her neck. She makes a small moan. “Only two days until our vacation. How do you feel about that?”Her eyes open and she smiles wide. “Pretty damn good.”“And the party tonight?”“As long as I have my shadow, I'll be feeling fine.”I smile down at her. “You couldn't get rid of me if you tried.”“Promise?” she asks playfully.“Always.”Now that Selena is mine, every day brings an opportunity to cherish and support her. Ever since she told me she had been kept as a slave and forced to work for scraps, I've been hyperaware of her emotional state. I've come to realize just how much her life has changed in such a short time. Living with us in her attic bedroom has been her first taste of freedom. The friends she's made here–Billie and the girls, Raven–are the first friendships she's ever had. She must be very emotio
SELENAThe Autumn Equinox approaches, and with it, the party everyone's been talking about for weeks. Will–or The Phantom, his stage name–is notoriously good at throwing parties. I'm sitting eating lunch with Billie when I find out more from the source himself.“My Luna, you look beautiful as ever,” he tells Billie before she kisses him on the cheek.“Sit down with us,” she tells him. “Selena's been asking about your parties. She's not a fan of partying in general, but yours are different.”The boy with the tiny star tattooed on his cheek looks at me sympathetically. “Mediocre parties can be loud, draining, and cruel,” he says, voicing the exact thoughts in my head. “My parties are more like special events. Everything is designed to give the attendees the best possible experience. We have safety protocols in place for alcohol use and consent. There are no dark corners where a girl could get hurt. Everything is carefully monitored and orchestrated into a collective experience of euphor
DOMINICAfter my fit of melodrama, it wouldn't have surprised me if I scared Selena off for good. But here she is the next morning, laying in my arms, her soft skin bare against mine. The sun shines down through the balcony doors and spreads across her face, giving her an ethereal halo. I love to watch her sleep.I took out one of her abusers last night. One down. What happened to Selena is unthinkable. That anyone could take this precious omega girl and harm her the way she's been harmed fills me with rage. I'll find a way to fight every single one of them, and take the whole rotten system out. That's why I've sent a message through the mindlink to Fleming to set up a secret meeting. We need to strategize. And it's time the pack knew who I was fighting, and, to a certain extent, why.Which was something I was preparing to bring up with Selena, when she beat me to it. “I want to tell Billie what happened to me. Maybe even the whole Omega Project,” she says on waking up. Like she's b
SELENADominic is out on the balcony, naked except for a pair of boxers, staring out into the pre-dawn mist. I go to him, pulling on a red silk robe as I go.“Dominic?”He jumps, but he doesn't turn to look at me. I touch his bare muscular back and the flesh twitches.“You shouldn't be out here,” he says to the trees. “I'm not fit company.”“What's wrong?” He glances at me, almost as if that's the most he can handle. “I ruin everything I touch, you know. You'll wish you had any mate other than me. Maybe you'll even reject me in the end. I'm a failure.” He finally looks at me. “I almost got Billie killed.”He turns away from me, looking out into the forest surrounding the Tower. He does it like he can't handle looking at me while he finishes.“I was supposed to be looking out that night, ready for anything. I was the one who was protecting Billie that night. And I had my back turned, and it all happened so fast. They tased me. Shot me full of wolf's bane. I went down. They got Tristan
