Elena's POV

After I sent the request, my mate, Ethan Hale, finally noticed me in the doorway.

"Elena? When did you get back? Why didn't you say anything?"

He turned and walked toward me, a streak of silver from one of the stickers smudged across his temple. His deep crimson eyes were warm with an easy smile.

"Come on in and take a look. This is the nursery for the pup."

His childhood best friend, Mia Vance, came up beside him, her voice bright and cheerful. "Elena, we spent the whole afternoon on this. Come see how it turned out."

I glanced into the room. Snow-white walls, carrot-shaped throw pillows, and every outfit hanging in the new wardrobe had little rabbit-ear hoods sewn onto them. It looked less like a nursery and more like a pet memorial.

Ethan turned back to Mia. "Where do you think the cradle should go? The window gets the best light, but do you think the draft would make it too cold?"

Mia tilted her head and thought for a moment. "It'll be fine. Let's go with that spot. Amber always liked curling up in corners to sleep anyway."

Ethan reached over and smoothed her hair, his voice softer than I'd ever heard it. "Then it's settled."

He finally turned to me, almost as an afterthought. "What did the healer say? Everything okay with the pup?"

"All the numbers looked normal."

He glanced down at the report. "Good."

Mia leaned in. "Let me see how Amber's coming along."

She reached for my belly as she spoke.

I stepped back immediately. "My baby's name isn't Amber."

Mia's hand stopped short, and her eyes went glassy almost instantly. "Elena, I just want my goddaughter to have the same love I gave Amber."

Her voice quivered. "It's just a name. Do you really have to make this big of a deal out of it?"

Behind her, Ethan's gaze hardened. "You know what Amber meant to Mia."

He stepped toward me and lowered his voice. "The Luna of the Redpine Pack isn't a petty woman."

I felt the threat underneath his words, but I didn't flinch. "I said my pup's name isn't Amber."

His expression darkened. "It's just a nickname. It's not going on any official records. Why are you making such a fuss?"

Mia dabbed at the corner of her eye, her voice barely a whisper. "If you really don't want me to use that name… I'll just use it when you're not around."

I pressed my lips together and said nothing. There was no point arguing with her anymore. No matter what I said, she was never going to change her mind.

My phone buzzed with a reminder from the healer about my next appointment. Ethan caught the notification on my screen and frowned.

"You have to go again tomorrow?"

I nodded.

He paused for a moment. "Mia has an appointment to pick up Amber's memorial crystal from the pet crematorium tomorrow. I need to go with her, so you'll have to go on your own."

Mia spoke up, her voice small and careful. "Maybe you should go with her to the healer instead. I can manage by myself."

Ethan cut her off. "Losing Amber hit you too hard. Your wolf's still unstable, and I'm not going to risk you spiraling when you're alone."

Then he looked at me, casual as anything. "You're not some freshly shifted pup. You can handle a checkup on your own."

I looked him straight in the eye. "Ethan, you haven't come to a single one of my checkups."

He stiffened for a second, then his frown deepened. "You know how much pack business I have on my plate. As my mate, you should be stronger than this."

Mia stepped toward me, her voice slipping into something deliberately sweet. "Don't blame Ethan. Once the pup is born, I'll move in and help you look after her. How does that sound?"

I held her gaze. "Do you want to look after the pup, or do you want to look after Ethan?"

The color drained from Mia's face, and the tears came instantly. "Elena, how could you even think that about me? Ethan and I grew up together. If I had those kinds of feelings for him, do you really think I would've waited this long?"

Ethan stepped between us immediately, his expression ice-cold. "Elena Blair, a Luna doesn't slander her own pack members. I'm disappointed in you."

I looked down at the dissolution request on my phone, already marked as sent. "What if I'm not the Luna anymore?"

Ethan turned away, irritation bleeding into his voice. "Stop being dramatic. You'd never actually leave me."

I stared at the sent request until my eyes burned. He was right. Before all of this, I never could have brought myself to do it.

But now, after he'd let Mia name my child after her pet, I couldn't stomach another second of this.

Elena's POVA year later, I finally carried the last box into the little cabin by the river bend. The place was small, just a bedroom and a living room, but the windows faced the direction the moon rose from.Garrett helped me arrange everything and glanced out the window. "The healer's clinic is close by. You won't have to go far for your checkups."I murmured my thanks. He was quiet for a moment, then added, "The healer says you're recovering well, but you still need more time to rest.""Don't worry. I'll take care of myself," I told him.He hesitated before mentioning that Ethan had been coming around again, trying to find out where I'd moved."I didn't tell him."He watched my reaction carefully as he said it. My gaze drifted to the river bend outside, its surface washed silver-gray by the moonlight."Good," I said. His expression finally relaxed. "Elena, leaving the wrong person was a good decision."After he left, I was alone in the cabin. Moonlight spilled through the

Third-Person POVElena thought everything tied to Ethan was behind her. But two days later, Mia posted an accusation on the pack's group chat. She called Elena heartless. She said Elena was so determined to spite her that she'd thrown away the pup carrying the Redpine bloodline without a second thought. She attached photos of all the custom Amber-themed items she'd had made for the pup.The group chat erupted. Pack members piled on one after another, and the vicious comments kept flooding in like poison-tipped arrows. But the tide didn't last long.Garrett filed a formal statement with the Elder Council on Elena's behalf. The healer's accident report, Mia's order history from every custom shop, and screenshots from the pack group chat were laid out in full. The conversation in the group chat flipped completely."So Mia was planning to turn Elena's pup into some kind of reincarnation of her dead rabbit?""The Alpha went with Mia to a pet crematorium to mourn a rabbit while his p

Third-Person POVEthan read through every line, his hand shaking around the phone until he couldn't hold it still anymore. He called Lorraine immediately."Do you have any idea what you've been saying to Mia?"Lorraine fired back without a shred of guilt. "What did I say that was so wrong? You've said it yourself—Mia cared about that pup more than its own mother."Besides, a Redpine pup is a Redpine pup no matter who raises it. I just never expected Elena to lose it."That afternoon, Mia came to the nursery. She was in a black dress, and her eyes were so swollen that she could barely keep them open. She looked as though she'd fall apart at the slightest touch."Ethan, I was wrong."Ethan didn't spare her a glance. She choked out the words. "I just couldn't let go of Amber. But I never meant to hurt Elena."Ethan finally looked at her. "Then do you know how she ended up falling in that corridor?"Mia went rigid."Because I went with you to the pet crematorium to pick up Amber

Third-Person POVEthan flinched, just barely, as if the words had hit something raw.Garrett pulled a scroll of documents bound with a leather cord from his case and held it out. "The full terms of the mate bond dissolution are in here. If you have any issues with them, raise them soon."Ethan stared down at the scroll for a long time before he managed to speak, his voice unsteady. "The pup is gone… but she can get pregnant again. As long as she forgives me, I'll do whatever it takes."Garrett was quiet for a while. He rarely showed emotion, but this time, there was a coldness in his voice that had never been there before."Ethan, do you still not get it? Elena didn't leave you because she lost the pup. She left because she was never going to let her pup be someone else's replacement."Ethan stood frozen beside the heather, motionless. That night, he went back to the house alone and found his way to the nursery. The door was slightly ajar. He pushed it open, and the room was s

Elena's POVGarrett drove me to a place he'd arranged ahead of time.As the car passed through the checkpoint at the edge of the territory, he didn't ask me anything. It wasn't until we were about to get out that he glanced over, concern written across his face. "Do you need to go back to the healer for another check?""No. Everything that needed to be done is done," I said. The place wasn't big, but it felt warmer than the "home" Ethan and Mia had decorated together.I left my suitcase in the corner of the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed, staring out at the moon just beginning to rise.My phone buzzed in my pocket. Ethan's name flashed across the screen. I looked at it for a moment, then hit decline. He called four more times. I turned the phone off entirely.Early the next morning, Garrett knocked on my bedroom door with two cups of hot herbal tea. He glanced out the window. "Ethan's downstairs. He's been standing there for about half an hour."He handed me a cup. "Wa

Elena's POVWhen I pushed the front door open, a slideshow of Amber's old videos was playing on loop on the TV screen. Mia was curled up on the couch, wiping her eyes, and Ethan sat beside her murmuring something soft.He stood up when he saw me come in. "Why do you look so rough?"He frowned. "Is something wrong with the pup?""It's nothing. I'm just tired today."I didn't tell him the pup was gone. He didn't pick up on anything and said casually, "Oh, Mia wants to hear the pup's heartbeat. Go get the monitor."I stopped walking. "That's too bad. She's never going to hear it."Ethan blinked. "What's that supposed to mean?"Mia suddenly pulled a custom anklet out of her pocket with the name "Amber" engraved on it. "Stop joking around. Look, I already had this made for Amber."I walked straight over, snatched the anklet out of her hand, and tossed it into the ashes in the fireplace.Ethan's expression changed completely. "Have you lost your mind? Why are you taking this out on
