Chapter 1

When Ryan finally came home, I was sitting on the living room sofa, staring into space.

Ryan and I have been mated for five years, but we've never been able to conceive. The pack elders had already started whispering, claiming my bloodline was too weak—that I wasn't fit to be the Luna of the Dark Moon Pack.

I found out I was two weeks pregnant a few days ago. I was planning to surprise him during the Full Moon Ceremony. Now, it seems he doesn't need that surprise anymore.

Ryan set a takeout bag on the table and leaned in to hug me.

"Celine, I brought you some beef stew. Drink it while it's hot."

I glanced at the bag. It was mostly broth with a few pathetic shreds of beef and barely any meat to speak of. It felt like a joke.

It was probably someone's leftovers.

I dodged his touch and pushed the bag away.

"I'm not hungry."

Ryan took it as me being difficult. He poured the soup into a bowl and held it to my lips.

"Stop acting up. Isn't beef stew your favorite?"

The fishy, cold scent of the stew hit my nose. I couldn't take it anymore. I bolted to the bathroom and started dry heaving.

Ryan tried to pat my back, but I slapped his hand away with a loud crack. I looked at him, my eyes rimmed with red.

"Don't touch me!"

Enraged by my repeated rejection, Ryan's voice rose in frustration.

"What do you want from me? I'm practically groveling here! Isn't that enough?"

"I haven't even called you out for that passive-aggressive comment on Instagram yet, and here you are, picking a fight!"

He sounded so righteous, as if I were the one who had done something wrong.

I looked at him in disbelief, my voice trembling.

"Are you seriously expecting me to be 'big-hearted' enough to congratulate another female for carrying my mate's pup?"

Ryan tugged irritably at the wolf-tooth pendant around his neck.

"Kaleb is dead! Is it so wrong for Clara to want a pup for companionship? I was Kaleb's best friend. It's my responsibility to take care of his mate and fulfill her final wishes."

"Besides, Clara and I didn't actually do it. I just gave her my seed through a Bloodline Sowing Ceremony. Do you have to make such a big deal out of nothing?"

"You're acting like a pathetic, jealous bitch!"

A jealous bitch?

When Kaleb first died, I felt sorry for Clara too. She was so young to be a widow. I looked after her, invited her over for dinner constantly, and whenever her pipes leaked or her power went out, Ryan and I went over to fix it together.

Clara would say with teary eyes that if Kaleb were still here, she wouldn't have to bother us.

I'd smile and tell her it was no trouble.

Ryan would nod firmly, telling her to call him whenever she needed anything and that he'd never say no.

Back then, I thought it was just his loyalty to Kaleb—taking care of his brother's widow.

But then, things started to change.

Without telling me, Ryan started doing her grocery shopping alone. He'd go to her place to assemble furniture. When she was scared of thunderstorms, he'd stay by her side all night and not come home...

And yet, he never stepped up to help me with those things at home.

I felt uneasy, but Ryan always insisted he was just "looking after Kaleb's widow," so I didn't push it.

I just never expected he'd go as far as "sowing" his seed for her!

Did he even stop to think? Once that pup is born, it will call him 'Father' and Clara 'Mother.' Where does that leave me as the Luna? What about our future pups?

I had wanted to have a real talk with him, but the moment I heard his accusations over the phone, the urge vanished.

Looking at him now—completely convinced he's done nothing wrong—I realized there was no point.

Ryan vented all his frustrations at once, ending with a final blow:

"Think about what you've done." Stop being so small-minded!"

He slammed the door and left.

It was late, but it wasn't hard to guess where he was going.

Sure enough, Clara's Instagram updated shortly after.

The photo showed Ryan's large hand resting on Clara's slightly rounded belly.

The caption read: The father of my pup came to spend the night with us. He says this is where he feels the warmth of a home.

Looking at the photo, I laughed at my own stupidity.

I should have known the moment Ryan stopped calling her "Kaleb's Mate" and started calling her "Clara."

Fine. If that's how it is, it's time to cut my losses.

Maybe it was because Ryan felt guilty, but he left me a massive chunk of his assets when we dissolved the bond. I took every single penny. It was enough to live comfortably for a very long time, so I took my growing pup and started traveling the world.Every time I reached a new destination, I sent a postcard back home to my parents. I also started documenting my journey and my feelings on Instagram. As time passed, I actually built up quite a following.People admired my courage—traveling the globe solo while pregnant. At the same time, the journey allowed me to experience the beauty of nature and find the path my life was actually meant to take. The last five years of my life under that mate bond felt like a past life.During my travels, my belly grew bigger. Whenever the pup kicked, I'd stroke my stomach and whisper to it."Baby, Mommy is going to protect you.""We don't need a man who doesn't deserve to be a father."By the time I finished my world tour and headed home, I heard new

I stared at Clara as she sat across from me, sipping her coffee with slow, deliberate movements. She was a completely different person from the girl who acted so helpless in front of Ryan. The mask of the fragile, innocent victim was gone. Now, the look she gave me was dripping with pure disdain."Ryan loves me. You need to sign those papers and sever the bond already."Seeing Clara finally show her true colors didn't rattle me. I picked up my cup and took a calm sip."What makes you think I'm the one refusing to sign?""Ryan is the one begging me not to end it."Clara froze for a second, then glared at me with pure hatred."Liar! I'm carrying his pup. Why would he ever choose you over mating with me?""You must be the one clinging to him, refusing to let go!"A moment later, she leaned back and started to laugh."You don't even know, do you? This pup in my belly... it didn't happen through some sterile 'Sowing Ceremony' like Ryan told you.""Ryan and I have been doing everything for a

Ryan looked nothing like his former self. His face was gaunt, covered in messy stubble—he was a shadow of the proud Alpha he used to be.The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up, and he rushed toward me."Celine! How are you feeling? Is the pup okay?"I gave him a distant, cold nod."Much better. If you don't have anything important to say, I'm leaving."He quickly reached out to stop me, cautiously handing me a small box.He opened it to reveal a pair of rings."Celine, the custom wedding bands finally arrived."When we first met, Ryan and I designed our own rings together. They held a special meaning for both of us.Back then, we promised each other that we would never take them off, no matter what happened. But eventually, I noticed the ring was missing from his finger. When I asked him where it went, he told me that seeing his wedding band made Clara sad. He claimed it reminded her of Kaleb, so he had taken it off to spare her feelings.I was furious at the time. We had a huge fight a

Early the next morning, Ryan showed up at the border entrance of the Silver Moon Pack territory. He didn't care that the guards tried to stop him; he forced his way in anyway. When I heard the commotion outside, I was sitting in bed, sipping some beef stew my mother had made for me.By the time Ryan burst into the room, his eyes were bloodshot, his jaw was covered in stubble, and he looked completely wrecked. He stared straight at me, his eyes swimming with guilt, regret, and agony. The moment my parents saw him, they started shoving him toward the door without a second thought."Get out! Get out now! You aren't welcome here!""As soon as Celine is healthy enough, she's severing the bond. My daughter doesn't need a cold-hearted Alpha like you!"Ryan looked pained, his voice thick and bitter."Celine, I... I didn't know you were pregnant. That day, I was just caught up in the heat of the moment...""Enough."I cut him off and signaled for my parents to step outside. I wanted to talk to

Over ten hours later, the plane touched down in a small border town on the edge of the Silver Moon Pack's territory.I dragged my luggage out of the arrival hall and immediately spotted my mother. She was standing by the exit, looking around anxiously. The moment she saw me, her eyes welled up. She rushed over and pulled me into a tight embrace."Celine! Why are you back all by yourself? Where's Ryan? Did something..."I looked at the worry etched on her face and tried to say I was fine, but my nose stung, and the tears started falling before I could stop them.My mom pulled me closer, her heart breaking for me as she stroked my hair."It's okay, it's okay. Mom's here. Tell me everything, honey."We found a quiet corner to sit down, and I told her every single thing that had happened—Clara's ultrasound, the scene at the clinic, Ryan's coldness, Clara's taunting texts, and the dissolution papers I'd left on the table back at the Pack House.By the time I finished, my mother was shaking

Vera glanced at me, looking a bit surprised. When she saw no trace of anger on my face, her expression softened slightly."I'm glad you finally understand." After all, the Dark Moon Pack can't go without an heir to the bloodline.""It's a good thing Ryan is such a loyal man, and we're lucky to have Clara." Otherwise, the Dark Moon line might have ended with you."As she spoke, Vera gently stroked Clara's stomach, her face beaming with joy.I found the whole thing nauseatingly ironic.Loyal? If Kaleb knew that Ryan's "care" for his mate involved knocking her up, his soul would probably storm back from the Moon Goddess's side just to tear him apart.Seeing that I remained silent, Clara shot me a timid, sideways glance."Celine, are you still mad at Ryan and me?""I really just wanted a pup of my own." I was so lonely and scared being in that house by myself."Clara started sobbing softly, acting as if she were the victim of some great injustice.Vera rushed to wipe her tears with a tissu
