Chapter 4

作者: Yumi
Before I could explain anything, Loki scooped Alice into his arms and turned to leave the room, abandoning me where I stood.

Only werewolves who had committed the gravest crimes were ever exiled from the pack and reduced to lowly rogue wolves.

Had Loki really passed judgment on me like this, without even bothering to learn the truth?

Thinking of the crystal still in Alice's possession, I clenched my teeth. I chased after them into the living room, only to see Loki kneeling as he carefully applied ointment to Alice's wound.

When he noticed me, he gave a cold order.

"Alice was hurt because of you, but she still pleaded for you. You won't be expelled from the pack, but pack your things and get out now. Don't show your face in front of us again."

Alice put on a fake, gentle smile as she spoke to me.

"Melissa, I know you didn't mean it. You must've been scared, right?"

Shadow bared his teeth at the two of them.

I didn't even look at Loki. I fixed my gaze on Alice and said coldly, "Give it back."

Alice blinked innocently. "What are you talking about? Give what back? Oh, you mean… but Melissa, I love Loki, too. Please, can't you give him to me?"

As she spoke, tears pooled in her eyes.

Loki pulled her into his arms, then slapped me hard across the face.

"Get out already! I warned you not to get ideas above your station. Looks like I went too easy on you!"

I caught sight of the crystal clenched tightly in Alice's palm.

I didn't bother arguing with Loki. I reached out and tried to take it.

Alice screamed in alarm. The crystal slipped from her hand, only to be caught by Loki's quick reflexes.

"Give the crystal back to me," I said urgently, "and I'll leave right now."

Loki frowned coldly, convinced I was beyond saving. "It's just a worthless stone. Is this really worth making such a scene over? Now apologize to Alice!"

I stared at him stubbornly and repeated each word slowly. "Give. It. Back."

Loki lost the last of his patience and hurled the crystal against the marble wall with all his strength.

It shattered on impact. The wolf totem splintered into pieces.

Shadow was stunned.

I stood frozen, staring at the shards scattered across the floor. I trembled and gathered them together, feeling as though my heart was bleeding.

"Grandma… I'm sorry, Grandma…" I murmured to myself, not even noticing when the sharp fragments sliced into my palms.

Realizing something was wrong, Loki frowned and tried to pull me up from the floor.

"I didn't mean to. If you'd just apologized to Alice earlier, none of this would've happened."

I looked at him dully, my body shaking faintly. After a long time, my lips finally moved.

"Loki, that crystal was my grandmother's keepsake. She raised me. That was the last thing she left me."

Shock and regret surged through Loki's eyes.

He had lost his parents young, and his grandmother had raised him. He should've understood my pain better than anyone else.

"I…"

"Tell him to get lost!" Shadow howled.

I shoved Loki away and left, clutching the broken crystal.

Back in the storage room, I had just finished wrapping the fragments when I received a call from my father.

"I'm going to meet the envoy from the Goldlush Pack right now."

After hanging up, I grabbed my packed suitcase and stepped outside, only to run straight into Loki, who was waiting at the door. There was still a trace of guilt on his face.

"Who did you say you were meeting just now? Tomorrow is my bonding ceremony with Alice. She wants you there."

"I told a friend I'd stay with her for a couple of days. I won't bother you. I'll show up then."

I couldn't even be bothered to spare him a glance.

Only then did I truly understand what it meant to lose all hope.

Loki let out a sigh of relief. He wanted to say he would drive me, but before he could even grab his car keys, I was already gone.

At the agreed hotel, I met the envoys from the Goldlush Pack. They treated me with respect and warmth.

I got into their car. From the back seat, I blocked and deleted every way Loki could contact me, then tossed my SIM card away.

From this moment on, Loki and I had nothing to do with each other anymore.

Loki's eyes went wide."Your mate? No! Melissa is my mate!"Ethan stepped in front of me, his tone calm and detached."No. You never were. You were only given the chance once, and you rejected that bond yourself. Now, Melissa belongs to the Goldlush Pack. She chose me."I looked at Ethan's profile, my heart pounding wildly."He's the one," Shadow murmured in awe.He called me his mate. He said I chose him.Loki collapsed onto the floor, confusion filling his eyes."No… This isn't how it's supposed to be… Melissa, you said you loved me…"I spared him only a single glance and replied coolly, "Yes, I did love you once. But that love was worn down completely the moment you broke our bond in public, allowed Alice to humiliate me, and shattered the crystal my grandmother left me."I gave Loki one last look. The man I had loved for decades, and suffered over for decades, now looked like a broken doll.Yet, I felt no satisfaction. Only relief.I turned to my father and bowed my he

At noon the next day, Mark arrived right on time to pick me up.When he saw that Ethan was coming with me, he looked surprised but didn't say anything. The drive back to the Silvermoon Pack was quiet. I watched the scenery pass by outside the window and thought about the last time I had traveled this road.Back then, I was filled with despair. Now, I felt strangely calm. When we arrived at the Silvermoon Pack, my father was waiting at the entrance.I had thought retirement would allow him to enjoy his later years, but he looked much older than before. He pulled me into a tight embrace. "Melissa, you've lost weight."I hugged him back. "I'm doing well, Dad. The Goldlush Pack has treated me very kindly."My father glanced at Ethan and nodded. "Thank you for taking care of my daughter."Ethan bowed gracefully. "Melissa is a valued member of the Goldlush Pack and my future mate. We're honored that she's joined us."As we spoke, we walked into the estate.Everything looked the sa

On the night of the full moon, the Goldlush Pack held its celebration.A bonfire blazed in the center of the square, and werewolves danced in circles around it. A few young female werewolves grabbed my hands and pulled me in, and I followed along awkwardly. After a few dances, I stepped aside to catch my breath.Ethan walked over and handed me a glass of fruit juice."Having fun?""I am. Very much."Ethan suddenly asked, "Do you want to go see the Moonstone?"The Moonstone was a sacred site of the Goldlush Pack. It was said to glow on nights of the full moon.We left the square and followed a narrow path up the mountain.Halfway there, Ethan suddenly stopped."Someone's following us."He moved in front of me protectively. Three werewolves stepped out of the woods, all from the Silvermoon Pack. The one in front was Mark.Mark bowed politely. "Ms. Brewer, the Alpha would like to see you."Shadow growled low in my chest, and I replied coldly, "I don't want to see him.""The

When I returned from the market, I overheard news about the Silvermoon Pack.A werewolf was speaking in a hushed voice to someone beside her, clearly sharing gossip."Did you hear?" she said. "The Luna of the Silvermoon Pack ran off and left behind a complete mess!"The person next to her looked shocked. "What? Didn't they just hold their bonding ceremony not long ago? It was such a big deal that even our pack heard about it.""Exactly! No idea what really happened. But I heard the Luna had a fight with the Alpha and stormed off in a fit of anger."Shadow snickered with undisguised satisfaction. "Just wait and see, Melissa! I bet Loki's gonna regret choosing Alice. She's a walking disaster."I hurried past them, my heart pounding. When I got back to my residence, a maid confirmed the rumor."It's true, Ms. Brewer. The Luna of the Silvermoon Pack left three days ago. They say she went to another city. Alpha Loki sent people to search for her, but they haven't found her."I sat

The next day, Loki sent his people to the Goldlush Pack. The reply he received was simple."Ms. Brewer is currently a guest of the Goldlush Pack and is not receiving outside visitors."Loki was so furious that he smashed things in his study."A guest? She's my mate!"His Beta, Mark Schneider, lowered his voice and reminded him."Alpha, you never completed a bonding ceremony with Ms. Brewer, and you never marked her. Strictly speaking, she isn't your mate."Loki froze. That was right. In his previous life, just to prove his so-called loyalty to Alice, he hadn't even given me the most basic mark."Go find her. Bring her back, no matter what it takes!" he roared, his voice hoarse. However, the Goldlush Pack was heavily guarded. The envoys couldn't even get through the gates.Loki went himself, only to be stopped at the edge of Goldlush territory."The Alpha has given orders. Members of the Silvermoon Pack are not permitted to enter without authorization.""I'm the Alpha of t

An hour and a half later, the car pulled into the Goldlush Pack. The architecture here was completely different from Silvermoon. It felt older, more rustic, and far closer to nature. An envoy opened the car door for me, his tone respectful."Ms. Brewer, Alpha is waiting for you in the main hall."I took a deep breath and walked into the reception hall.A tall figure stood by the window. Hearing my footsteps, he turned around. The Alpha of the Goldlush Pack, Ethan Corbyn, was younger than I had expected. He looked to be under 30, his golden eyes calm and steady. He inclined his head politely, his voice low and composed."Welcome. Was your journey smooth?"My nerves eased quite a bit. I nodded and smiled."It went very well. Thanks for receiving me."He gestured for me to sit."You're welcome. I'm already aware of the circumstances surrounding this alliance. You can stay here for now. There's no need to feel pressured."I froze for a moment. This was nothing like what I had
