Valtira

“Your hands were made for cooking, not for leading!”

“A woman’s purpose is to breed heirs for her mate, and politics? It’s a battlefield no woman of mine will ever tread!” My father’s Alpha voice snapped, shaking the very walls of the pack hall.

“Mother…”

I turned to my mother, desperate for help, but she avoided my eyes and looked back at him.

“Valtira, you heard your father,” she said, her voice betraying a tremble. “Women are not allowed to meddle in politics. He knows what is best for you.”

I scoffed. My blood, boiling at the words I have heard time and time again. “Do you even have the choice to object? You obey him like a puppet—”

My head swung to the side as my mother’s palm landed on my cheek. The impact knocked the breath out of me, leaving my ears ringing in its wake.

I snapped my head back. My head was heavy as I wiped

the blood from my nose with the back of my hand.

The pain burned through me, but I refused to show it.

“You can hit me all you want, but you can never change the truth,” I gritted out between my teeth. “I am right and you know it. He controls you!”

My mother’s expression flickered with something like pain, then hardened. She tilted her head, inhaling deeply before meeting my eyes. “You are more stubborn than I thought, Valtira. We made this decision for the pack, for its safety. You are still doing the pack a service…”

“Oh save that speech, mother.” I let out a bitter laugh.

“Save that silly excuse for yourself.”

“Why not use your favorite daughter, Martina? Why me?” My lips curled into a sneer. “Maybe it’s because beautiful Martina is special. She’s the daughter you truly love, isn’t she?”

“VALTIRA!” My mother’s voice trembled as she clutched the hem of her dress. “Do not speak to me in that manner!” she warned, jabbing a finger at me.

“Or what?!” I snapped back, taking a step forward in the challenge. “You already sold me to a cursed, ruthless Alpha in exchange for power. What could be worse than that?”

“Grrrrrrrr…” My wolf, Xia, growled softly in my head. Restless and ready to break free. We’ve both been wronged. But I am fighting for the two of us—and losing. Badly.

"It's okay,” I answered her through our mind link, trying to soothe her fury.

We expected that this day would come…just not so soon.

“You want to know what’s worse?” My father’s voice sliced through the air, low and dangerous. “It’s when your body is bound in silver chains.”

“You HAVE to be obedient to him, Valtira. Take it as an order, from your alpha.”

My spine stiffens. My heart, squeezing tight. Death is kinder than silver, at least you die and forget about it all. But silver? It tortures you, killing you slowly and dragging you through unbearable pain.

My parents’ decision was silver to me.

Not only did they steal my dream of ever leading the pack, but they also stopped me from meeting my mate, two weeks ago. On the night of the last full, red moon, when the goddess had made our scents stronger.

I swallowed hard, my throat burning. And all for what?!

To make sure nothing stands in the way of their bargain with the cursed alpha?

My throat closed up. My heartbeat quickened in fast succession. They can’t just sell me off like I’m some piece of trash.

“Was this… was this the reason you kept me from the trials after I trained day and night to lead?” My voice shook, but neither of them answered.

Mother bristled in her spot as she sent my father a look, and the latest episode of her wrongdoings to me hummed through my memory like a painful tornado.

On the day of the trials to pick the eligible warriors in the pack, my mother had prepared my favourite meal.

It was the first time she had ever taken it upon herself to do ‘anything’ for me. I should have seen it as suspicious, but my longing for motherly love had blinded my eyes, making me eat joyfully.

Minutes after that however, my eyelids had struggled to stay awake, and by the time I woke up, I was already locked deep in the pack cellar. Half a day had gloriously passed and the ceremony was long over.

With my brother winning the title that should have been rightfully mine.

They stripped everything from me and called it fate.

Every morning before dawn, I trained until my bones screamed. Every night while the pack slept, I pushed myself harder, believing one day I would stand beside my father. To lead. I earned the right to fight for this pack, but instead, they caged me—shoving me into darkness while my brother took the glory I bled for.

I turned to my mother, hatred clouding my eyes. “You don’t love me, do you? Are you even sure I’m your child?—“

“Enough of these useless questions. Your carriage will be here any moment, so save your words,” My father snapped, pulling my mother closer as if to protect her from me.

My eyes narrowed. My feet sank into the floor as my fingers curled into fists.

This wasn't new.

I’ve always been treated like an outcast, as though I were cursed.

My mother treasured her other two children more than me. She never fought for me, never showed me an ounce of motherly love. For years, I’ve been a prisoner in my own pack, stripped of everything, even what was rightfully mine as the Alpha’s firstborn!

Useless. My father’s words ignited rage in my chest.

“Do you know what’s truly useless? Being born into a disgusting pack like yours… and being your daughter.”

“VALTIRA!” my mother cries out.

In a swift movement, my father charged at me and clamped his hand around my jaw, his fingers dug cruelly into the joint.

I winced painfully. Panting as I struggled to pry him off.

“You bastard child,” he spat as he flung me to the side. I escaped hitting the wall by only a meter. “You were supposed to be dead. I gave you life even though you are nothing but a curse born of wedlock, and this is how you repay me?”

Ignoring the pain and the sharp pull in my jaw, I stood to my feet again and glared at him. “Repay you? For what? I owe you nothing, Father. It’s the other way around, you owe me for ruining my life.” Each word dripped with venom, and I saw his eyes widen.

Suddenly, he shoved me down again, and this time I did not miss the wall as he slammed me hard against the concrete.

My entire body ached like it's been set on fire, but what cuts deeper is my mother’s gaze, she doesn’t move to stop him. She only watches, satisfaction flickering in her brown eyes.

“One more word,” my father snarled. The veins in his head, jutted out as he spoke, “and I will kill you.”

I wiped the blood from my lips and met his glare. “You cannot kill me. I have already been bought. You sold me. Remember?” I broke into a hysterical laugh when his face hardened even more.

“Please, Nicholas, let her be,” My mother finally spoke, her voice calm and detached. “No matter how much she yaps, it doesn’t change the fact that she’s getting sold, and her younger brother will take over the pack.”

Her words shattered me, tearing my soul apart. There was no regret in them. Or shame. Who in the world decided that a woman cannot rule? The moon goddess herself is a woman!

I want to be Luna of this pack!

Before I rub that point in, a shadow grabbed my attention from the corner.

“Alpha Nicholas, her things are packed. She’s ready to depart,” one of the Moonfang Soldiers announced.

My father gave a small nod. “Good. They’ll be here any moment.”

I stared at them, betrayed and broken.

Becoming a Luna has always been my birthright for crying out loud. I haven't spent years cleaning up the pack’s shit and tackling every little problem simply because I wanted to…and now I’m being handed over like a slave to a cursed rogue Alpha.

I bit back my tears. I won’t give them the satisfaction of seeing me weak. Never. Not for this wretched family.

The distant rumble of hooves filled the air.

They’re here. My knuckles turned white as my heart hammered against my chest.

My father snapped his fingers, and at his gesture, the Moon Soldiers seized me. Yanking hard against their grip, I twisted toward my mother. Her eyes flickered, unsteady as she turned away, refusing to hold my gaze.

“You’ve failed as a mother,” I spat, my voice, sharp with hate. “I never want to see your face again.”

My gaze, sweeping over the towering walls below. Beyond, the forest stretched endlessly into a darkening horizon, silent and watchful. It was one of my favorite spots to retreat whenever I needed to think clearly.Lifting a goblet to my lips, I took a slow slip, letting the bitter tang of wine cut through my thoughts before I finally broke the silence. “She’s the one.”Zechariah smirked, surprise marring his brows as he perched against the window wall like a lazy cat. “For years you’ve been searching for her. Who would have thought it would turn out to be Nicholas’s child?”A dry laugh escaped him. “But I must admit, she’s stubborn.” He said casually.Indeed, she is. Stubborn to the bone. Stretching higher and wider than anything I’ve ever seen before. The walls towered above us as we rode in, dark and unyielding. A strange heaviness hung in the air, pressing down with urgent pressure on my chest, and making it hard to breathe. As we approached the gates which were tall and menacing like prison doors, I froze.Without warning, they creaked open, revealing two soldiers waiting on the other side. They weren't ordinary guards, but monstrous men, with broad shoulders and entirely fearsome.
