âYour Majesty, the ring can't be removed,â Agnes respectfully told the Queen after she tried and failed to remove the ring herself.
âThen find a way to get it off,â she said sharply. With that, the Queen left the room at once.
With her departure, Agnes stared at me for a moment before saying to those around her, âTake her to the cell.â
With that, the two servants lifted me up like a doll and carried me to the backyard. I had no freedom whatsoever. For one entire day, I was imprisoned in the cold room. During this time, several people came to try to remove the ring, but each attempt was in vain. Every method had been exhausted, and my finger had become numb from all the fuss, yet the ring remained stuck on my finger.
Slowly, drowsiness overcame me once again, and I fell asleep.
A prickling sensation stirred me from my dreams, alerting me to the presence of someone drawing near. Gradually, I opened my eyes, but all that met my gaze was an impenetrable shroud of darkness.
âAwake?â Suddenly, a magnetic voice echoed through the dark. In the darkness, I could feel a pair of eyes staring at me intently. I sat up in bed, scanning left and right, until I noticed a tall man standing in front of me.
Although I couldn't see his face clearly, I could feel a cold and fierce aura coming toward meâone I remembered belonged to Ragnar. His alluring and unmistakable aura had left an undeniable impression on me, especially since we had engaged in a marathon of passion on our wedding night.
However⊠wasnât he sent to the hospital the previous night? When did he come back? I stared at him in horror, my mind racing with fear and confusion.
I donât want to be killed. No, I donât want to die.
âI have good news for you,â he said.
But I couldnât see his facial expression. I only heard him chuckle and add, âIâve decided to keep you here.â
âWhat⊠until the ring is taken off?â
Ragnar spat out the second half of the sentence. My hope was mercilessly shattered to pieces yet again.
I was fully aware that Ragnarâthe demon before meâwas not the benevolent type. His intent was to possess the ring adorning my finger.
If I managed to somehow take the ring off⊠would I still be sent to that place?
I narrowed my eyes at him in the darkness.
He shook his head. âNo. Youâll be set free as soon as you take off the ringâif you do as I say.â
The glimmer of hope that had almost disappeared now blazed up again within me.
âIs that true?â
âYou can choose not to believe me,â he replied.
âNo, I believe you,â I raised my voice. If I did not put my trust in him, then I would be filled with despair. Thus, I chose to have faith in his words.
âBut⊠I canât take the ring off,â I said, my voice barely above a whisper. âSo many people have tried, yet none could remove it. How could I possibly do it?â
âWell, then, you should put in some effort,â he replied, leaning down and lifting my chin with his hand. Then he kissed me on the lips.
I instinctively let out a muffled sound of protest. Ragnar tightened his grip on my chin and whispered into my ear, âOr do you want to live with them in that place far, far away?â
âNo⊠I definitely donât want to.â
âOr are you just like the othersâpetrified of me, hating my guts?â
His kiss grew more intense. I dared not struggle anymore and let him kiss me.
With a hint of derision, he declared, âYour father sold you to me, which means youâre mine now. You should feel honored that I even lay a finger on you. Got it?â
Despite being the one who had forced me into this marriage, Ragnar spoke as if I was the one to blame. Though I was seething with anger, I dared not show it.
Just as I thought he was going to push me down on the bed, he suddenly released me and walked away with a contemptuous sneer.
I breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that the night was going to pass peacefully.
In the morning, Agnes threw a folder in front of me and said expressionlessly, âYou should go through the contents of this folder carefully.â
âWhatâs in this?â I asked, taking the folder from her and flipping it open.
I scanned through its contentsâit listed a long series of restrictions. I was forbidden from going near the Nightfang familyâs ancestral hall, from divulging any secrets about the Nightfang family to outsiders, and from turning on the lights without Ragnarâs consent during our private moments at night.
It was a slew of restrictions that left me feeling even more trapped here.
But wait⊠I couldnât turn on the lights? Seriously? No wonder Ragnar didnât turn them on both times I saw him.
Why? Was it because he was so ugly that he didnât want to be seen? Or had he become so sick that he no longer had a human form?
Besides, I was expected to become pregnant with a child within two months. Ragnar was too occupied with work and hardly ever came home, yet they demanded that I conceive a child within two months.
âHow is that even possible?â I asked.
âMiss Calista,â the Queenâs voice cut sharply, âalthough itâs been proven that you are not destined to be with Ragnar, we canât take the ring off your finger. So the Nightfang family can only keep you around for one purposeâto bear a child of the family.â
âBut Ragnar said that he would set me free as soon as I take off the ring!â I stuttered.
âI will set you free once you give birth to a child. Miss Calista, understand that the Nightfang family is making a great concession by keeping you here. Donât push your luck,â warned the Queen, her tone growing impatient.
Concession? This was clearly just another way of torturing me. So I had to give birth to Ragnarâs child in order to gain my freedom.
How was this any less heinous than my father, who sold me off? Was there any difference between this and his despicable acts?
So it seemed that I not only had to take off the ring, but also had to carry a child for Ragnar just to be granted my freedom.

Lola pov Tossing and turning in bed, I caught sight of the clock on the wall, its hands pointing at the witching hour of 01:00 in the morning. At this moment, the mansion was so quiet that one could hear the sound of a needle falling on the ground. As a gust of wind blew by, the window screens fluttered and made a delicate sound. After what had happened in the prayer room, I couldn't help but feel a chill. I tightened the blanket around me at once. I thought about turning on the light, only to remember that it had been tampered with and wouldn't shine. At night, Agnes had said that I wasn't allowed to turn on the light when Ragnar was around. The next moment, scenes of Ethan and Calista being intimate, and Calista's vicious words replaced my thoughts. I shook my head and closed my eyes. I really couldn't think about any of these anymore. Suddenly, a knocking sound came from the door. I turned away from the door. Instead of getting up, I curled up under the blanket and wiped awa
Lola POV Two servants immediately came from the door and dragged me to the backyard. âWhat are you doing?â I was hauled to the prayer room on the west side of the building. The prayer room was more like a medium-sized church than an actual prayer room, and the absence of any religious items only accentuated the purity and nobility of the room with its snow-white walls and large, transparent windows. The center of the room held a massive, polygonal table with various objects adorning each cornerâpocket watches, rings, glasses, chains, and even withered roses stacked on one another, almost touching the ceiling. It was a solemn, dignified space filled with mystery. As I gazed in awe at the impressive table, the two maids brought me to my knees, forcing me to kneel on the floor. Agnes appeared before me with an emotionless face, stating, âMadam Calista, you will be here to reflect for a day and night.â With that, she turned on her heel and left. I was dumbstruck. A whole da
As he drove, Ethan's mind couldnât help but wander to Lola and the man from earlier. Despite being the one who asked for the breakup, the sight of Lola already getting cozy with another man stung him with humiliation. After all, they had been together for three years, and as a member of the most prestigious family in the city, Ethan expected Lola to feel the pain of their breakup for at least a few weeks, if not months. But what if Calista was right? What if Lola had already been seeing this man even while they were still dating, and had simply been waiting for Ethan to initiate the breakup so she wouldnât have to play the villain in the end? In the central tower of the Livingstone Army, Agnes, the person in charge of all the Nightfang family affairs, frowned. Her eyes were not as sharp as they used to be, and hence she could not make out the outline of the picture. Without hesitation, she turned to Taylor, who was sitting with the Queen and sipping tea. Taylor was Ragnarâs cousi
Lola P O.V I glared at him and asked through gritted teeth, âEthan, is this how you feel? Did you really fall in love with her a year ago?â Ethan looked at her and eventually nodded. âIâm sorry.â His apology broke my heart. No wonder when I cried to him a week ago about having to marry Ragnar, that pained expression of his seemed so fake. âMy little sister, now that you heard it yourself from Ethan, are you going to give up for good?â Calista smirked, intentionally leaning into his arms and kissing his lips. Even the most cowardly person on Earth knew that they shouldnât sit still and do nothing in the face of such a provocation. âNice try, Calista, but Iâm not about to let you and Ethan get away with this. You think Iâm just going to roll over and take it? No way. Even if it means going down together, Iâm going to do it.â âWhat do you mean? What are you going to do?â Calistaâs face darkened. âI will return to the Queen and reveal this deceitful scheme plotted by you and Etha
Lola P.O.V Jamie and my stepmother, Larissa, were both out, so the house was empty. When I arrived, the kitchen was buzzing with activity. I presumed that the servants were preparing lunch. I rushed upstairs to Calistaâs bedroom. I knocked on the door, but there was no answer. As I waited at the door of Calistaâs room, a strange noise caught my attention. My curiosity got the best of me, and I couldnât resist opening the door a little. There was no one in there, and the noise seemingly came from the bathroom. When I took a peek into the bathroom, I saw two people making out inside. I had to take a step back to catch my breath. Waitâhold up. Wasnât that my boyfriend, Ethan, whom I had dated for three years? And my half-sister, Calista? My mind seemed to have exploded and my body froze. Wasnât Calista disfigured after being burned in her apartment? But why was she at home without a scratch on her? And why were they together here? How long had the two of them been seeing each other?
RAGNAR P.O.V The first time I laid eyes on my newly wedded mate, Calista, I could immediately sense that my wolf, Lucas, had become more unstable. In fact, it had been silent for a long time due to the curse. This was an extremely rare phenomenon. âI heard you can cure my illness,â I said coldly, sizing up Calista in the darkness. âIâm talking to you.â I leaned in, using my fingers to lift her chin and force her to meet my gaze. As I looked into her eyes, something passed through my body. This feeling was the same as when I first saw her picture. For a moment, I saw something in Calistaâs eyes that reminded me of that specific woman. In truth, I already had the same feeling when I saw her picture, otherwise I wouldnât have agreed to my motherâs arrangement to marry her. Knowing full well that they two were not the same person, I still chose to marry this girl called Calista. Strangely enough, in the first second that I saw her, I felt an unexplainable impulse and desire burning
