Tossing and turning in bed, I caught sight of the clock on the wall, its hands pointing at the witching hour of 01:00 in the morning. At this moment, the mansion was so quiet that one could hear the sound of a needle falling on the ground. As a gust of wind blew by, the window screens fluttered and made a delicate sound. After what had happened in the prayer room, I couldn't help but feel a chill. I tightened the blanket around me at once. I thought about turning on the light, only to remember that it had been tampered with and wouldn't shine. At night, Agnes had said that I wasn't allowed to turn on the light when Ragnar was around. The next moment, scenes of Ethan and Calista being intimate, and Calista's vicious words replaced my thoughts. I shook my head and closed my eyes. I really couldn't think about any of these anymore. Suddenly, a knocking sound came from the door. I turned away from the door. Instead of getting up, I curled up under the blanket and wiped away the tears in my eyes with the back of my hand. At this hour, who could it be other than Ragnar? Sure enough, it was Ragnar who came in in the darkness. I still couldn't see his face, but I could feel the domineering aura emanating from him. He walked straight over and pulled me out of the bed, grabbing my jaw with his callous hand. “I heard you were cheating on me with another man outside,” his voice was laced with thick displeasure. I was stupefied for a moment and instinctively shook my head. “I didn't.” “Miss Calista, don't forget that you are now my wife, my mate. If you want to cry, you can only cry for me. Stop those tears right now,” Ragnar asserted, showcasing his overpowering personality. I hurriedly wiped my tears with my sleeve and retorted, “I'm not crying for any man. And why are you crying?” I asked. Ragnar smirked and interjected, “Is it because of me? Are you blaming me for not bringing you back to your home today?” “No.” Before I could explain, he had already smashed his lips onto mine. I didn't know what came over me, but I had the audacity to push him away. I could feel his anger rising. So I quickly explained, “I'm sorry. I'm just not in the mood tonight.” That was the truth. I really didn't have any mood. Ragnar seemed somewhat triggered, and I could sense a hint of fury in his gaze toward me. Suddenly, he pushed me onto the bed and chuckled devilishly in my ear. “Not in the mood, but I am. Please—don't,” I said weakly. “I warn you, don't let me catch you crying for another man again. Or else I'll have plenty of ways to make you regret it.” Ragnar threatened as he ripped my clothes off with a hiss. I felt a chill on my skin. I knew that this time he was serious about it. An hour later, calm was restored to my bedroom. Ragnar left after completing his business, likely retreating to his own quarters. I had always assumed that Ragnar was too hideous to face me. But the secrets of the Nightfang family were not mine to know. Fearful, I spent the entire night in a restless haze, only managing to doze off as the dawn approached. But before I could truly fall asleep, there came a knock on the door. Agnes walked in with a stern face. She paid no regard to my groggy state. “Madam, good morning. Mr. Ragnar instructed me to bring you this pill,” she said, handing me a small packet. I took a glance at the packet. It turned out that it was a morning-after pill. Almost simultaneously, another servant entered, carrying a bowl of murky black medicine. “Madam, this is a tonic that the Queen had specially told the kitchen to prepare for you. She insists that you drink it before breakfast,” the maid said politely. If this tonic was prepared by Queen Evelyn herself, it was surely related to fertility. Looking at the morning-after pill in my hand and the tonic in the maid’s bowl, I suddenly found the situation absurd. The Queen and Ragnar were indeed an interesting pair: one wanted me to get pregnant, and the other was afraid of it. Whose advice should I follow in the end? To appease the ever-watchful maids, I decided to take both. To be honest, I never thought about having a child so soon. After all, I had no feelings for Ragnar, and I didn't even know what our future would be like. And if Ragnar really couldn't live past thirty, as rumors suggested, then whether or not I could take off the ring after that year, I would be free, and there would be no reason for me to give birth to a son for him before marrying into the Nightfang family. No one had told me who was part of this household. In the past few days after the wedding, I had only seen the Queen. At the dining table, there were two young girls beside the Queen. Agnes introduced them to me: Hazel, the fiancée of Ragnar’s cousin, who, too, was an alpha; and Miss Taylor, who was Ragnar’s cousin as well. The two appeared impressive and gorgeous, exuding an air of gentility and decorum. But I had no interest in them at all, hence I merely offered a cordial salutation. However, to my surprise, Taylor was fixated on my finger—more accurately, she was glaring at the ring on my ring finger. Her eyes glistened with greed, which caused me to feel uneasy and perplexed. Thus I refrained from engaging in any communication with her and instead maintained a composed stance. The Queen looked at me with a somber expression and uttered, “Had it not been for Ragnar’s intervention yesterday, you would still be kneeling in the prayer room at this moment.” I cast my gaze downward and let out a rueful chuckle in my heart. Ragnar was the one who saved me. He just needed my body, nothing more. I humbly bowed my head and whispered, “Your Majesty, please believe me, I have not committed any wrongdoing against the Nightfang family.” The Queen’s eyes immediately blazed with fury as she sharply retorted, “Oh, really. Your actions have left me too embarrassed to even speak of them. You shall return to your parents' house after breakfast and be taught the fundamental decorum befitting a future Queen Luna before you may set foot in this place again.” “Go back to my parents’ house? Why do I have to go?” I felt really troubled because I really didn't want to see them again. “Did you hear me?” The Queen’s patience was wearing thin. I nodded, knowing that I had no room to refuse her. Yes, I do. After breakfast, I went back to my own bedroom upstairs. I could vaguely hear people inside discussing. “I heard that Madam Calista saw a ghost last night and cried in fear.” “I heard that too. They say it was a female ghost crying and asking Madam Calista to return the ring to her. Could it be true? So scary,” said another maid, her voice trembling. “That’s entirely possible. Ragnar's fifth mate once claimed that she encountered a female ghost in the dead of night asking her for the same ring. The poor woman was so terrified that she passed away on the spot.” The maid made a gesture of silence to another maid. I stood at the door, dumbfounded. What were they just talking about? Did Ragnar’s fifth mate also see a female ghost at night? Did the ghost also demand the ring? And she was so terrified that she passed away on the spot? So everything I saw the previous night was real. Was there really a ghost haunting the Nightfang family?Lola pov Tossing and turning in bed, I caught sight of the clock on the wall, its hands pointing at the witching hour of 01:00 in the morning. Lola POV Two servants immediately came from the door and dragged me to the backyard. “What are you doing?” I was hauled to the prayer room on the west side of the building. The prayer room was more like a medium-sized church than an actual prayer room, and the absence of any religious items only accentuated the purity and nobility of the room with its snow-white walls and large, transparent windows. The center of the room held a massive, polygonal table with various objects adorning each corner—pocket watches, rings, glasses, chains, and even withered roses stacked on one another, almost touching the ceiling. It was a solemn, dignified space filled with mystery. As I gazed in awe at the impressive table, the two maids brought me to my knees, forcing me to kneel on the floor. Agnes appeared before me with an emotionless face, stating, “Madam Calista, you will be here to reflect for a day and night.” With that, she turned on her heel and left. I was dumbstruck. A whole da
As he drove, Ethan's mind couldn’t help but wander to Lola and the man from earlier. Despite being the one who asked for the breakup, the sight of Lola already getting cozy with another man stung him with humiliation. After all, they had been together for three years, and as a member of the most prestigious family in the city, Ethan expected Lola to feel the pain of their breakup for at least a few weeks, if not months. But what if Calista was right? What if Lola had already been seeing this man even while they were still dating, and had simply been waiting for Ethan to initiate the breakup so she wouldn’t have to play the villain in the end? In the central tower of the Livingstone Army, Agnes, the person in charge of all the Nightfang family affairs, frowned. Her eyes were not as sharp as they used to be, and hence she could not make out the outline of the picture. Without hesitation, she turned to Taylor, who was sitting with the Queen and sipping tea. Taylor was Ragnar’s cousi
Lola P O.V I glared at him and asked through gritted teeth, “Ethan, is this how you feel? Did you really fall in love with her a year ago?” Ethan looked at her and eventually nodded. “I’m sorry.” His apology broke my heart. No wonder when I cried to him a week ago about having to marry Ragnar, that pained expression of his seemed so fake. “My little sister, now that you heard it yourself from Ethan, are you going to give up for good?” Calista smirked, intentionally leaning into his arms and kissing his lips. Even the most cowardly person on Earth knew that they shouldn’t sit still and do nothing in the face of such a provocation. “Nice try, Calista, but I’m not about to let you and Ethan get away with this. You think I’m just going to roll over and take it? No way. Even if it means going down together, I’m going to do it.” “What do you mean? What are you going to do?” Calista’s face darkened. “I will return to the Queen and reveal this deceitful scheme plotted by you and Etha
Lola P.O.V Jamie and my stepmother, Larissa, were both out, so the house was empty. When I arrived, the kitchen was buzzing with activity. I presumed that the servants were preparing lunch. I rushed upstairs to Calista’s bedroom. I knocked on the door, but there was no answer. As I waited at the door of Calista’s room, a strange noise caught my attention. My curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn’t resist opening the door a little. There was no one in there, and the noise seemingly came from the bathroom. When I took a peek into the bathroom, I saw two people making out inside. I had to take a step back to catch my breath. Wait—hold up. Wasn’t that my boyfriend, Ethan, whom I had dated for three years? And my half-sister, Calista? My mind seemed to have exploded and my body froze. Wasn’t Calista disfigured after being burned in her apartment? But why was she at home without a scratch on her? And why were they together here? How long had the two of them been seeing each other?
RAGNAR P.O.V The first time I laid eyes on my newly wedded mate, Calista, I could immediately sense that my wolf, Lucas, had become more unstable. In fact, it had been silent for a long time due to the curse. This was an extremely rare phenomenon. “I heard you can cure my illness,” I said coldly, sizing up Calista in the darkness. “I’m talking to you.” I leaned in, using my fingers to lift her chin and force her to meet my gaze. As I looked into her eyes, something passed through my body. This feeling was the same as when I first saw her picture. For a moment, I saw something in Calista’s eyes that reminded me of that specific woman. In truth, I already had the same feeling when I saw her picture, otherwise I wouldn’t have agreed to my mother’s arrangement to marry her. Knowing full well that they two were not the same person, I still chose to marry this girl called Calista. Strangely enough, in the first second that I saw her, I felt an unexplainable impulse and desire burning
