Sophia

The silence that followed was uncomfortable. There were glances exchanged between Bright and my father that I couldn't decipher. I felt like the tension would explode at any moment. I think I did a better job than Bright at hiding my displeasure. But, in reality, Bright wasn’t even trying to conceal it.

I shot Bright a look, silently telling him to behave. He and I could fight, but not now. Not in front of my parents. Did he want to draw their attention? Make me look like the guilty one?

Damn it, Bright.

Finally, my father set down his silverware and rested his elbows on the table, looking directly at Bright. He clasped his hands together and placed them under his chin. I knew Dad was about to question something. We had barely spoken all night. I wasn’t a quiet person, and my parents knew it.

“I know something is going on between you two,” he said firmly. “Is it something we should be worried about? Marital problems? Have you cheated on her, Bright?”

Dad was tough. His personal

SophiaBright closed the door gently, but it still marked the distance between us. He took with him the last bit of peace I had left. Watching him walk away hurt. He was simply going to lie down in the room next door, but every day, it felt like we were miles apart.I was left alone, my heart shattered on the floor, and a weight on my chest that made it hard to breathe. I sat on the edge of the bed and instinctively placed my hands on my belly as if trying to protect the baby from what I was feeling. I didn’t want my pain to reach them. I didn’t want them to feel what I was feeling. I wanted to shield them from what was happening between their parents. In front of the bed was an old mirror my mom had always insisted on keeping there. The reflection showed me a version of myself I barely recognized. A version that felt alone, but wasn't completely alone. There was still something worth fighting for, no matter how hopeless everything seemed. And that, I supposed, was reason enough to ga

SophiaI swallowed hard, silently begging my angels to calm the storm in my stomach. I didn’t want to feel nauseous. Not now. When Bright crossed the threshold of the room, an invisible wave ran mercilessly down my back. My whole body tensed immediately. I was terrified. I felt like I was under a spotlight as if I had committed a crime.I clenched my fingers into my palms, trying to keep my composure as he gently closed the door behind him and entered the room, moving slowly because of how affected he still was.My mom was still with us and had stayed on the sidelines but present, which made me even more nervous about what I had just told her. I could tell, just by the look on her face, that the news weighed heavily on her. She looked at us and headed for the door. But before leaving, she turned to Bright and gave him that calm, stern look she used when something bothered her. I guessed what she was about to say and braced myself. She stared at him like she was the head of the house.

SophiaI had made the decision that I would tell him. Yes, I couldn’t keep it to myself, and the right thing to do was to face him and speak openly. I wouldn’t hide it from him, but I needed to gather the courage to face him. After all, this was something we had done, not just me. He couldn’t be mad at me because Bright also bore responsibility for what happened.I pictured his face. Those eyes I knew so well. That furrowed brow whenever something upset him. That way he pressed his lips together when he was holding back. And then I remembered his smile. The way he looked at me when he thought I wasn’t noticing. His warm embrace. The way he had told me to forgive him for how he’d treated me.What if that wasn’t true anymore? What if this ruined the little we had left between us? To be honest, I didn’t even know what was left, but yesterday I thought I felt a glimmer of hope.I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling as if I might find answers there. But all I found were more doubts. Mor

Sophia My chest felt like it was carrying kilos of weight. It was hard to even breathe normally. Everything had changed. The possibility had always been right in front of me, but I never really believed it. It felt completely different when I saw the result. A result that didn’t feel real until I saw it.The test trembled between my fingers, as if it, too, was just as stunned as I was. One word that starts with a “p” changed my entire view of the world and everything that lay ahead. It was a push I hadn’t asked for, hadn’t needed or expected, but it had found me anyway.Pregnant. The question of how I let this happen was rooted in my head, and I had no intention of leaving anytime soon. We —his parents— weren’t in an ideal situation. We could barely take care of ourselves, and now we had to think about someone else. That word kept repeating in my head, echoing violently through every corner of my mind without a hint of stopping. No comfort could calm me down or silence the fear. Not

SophiaShe didn’t even knock on the door. She came in with hurried steps, her eyes shining and her energy completely clashing with the peace that had settled between Bright and me. She didn’t seem to see me. Her attention was entirely on him, and once again, I immediately felt out of place and uncomfortable. I didn’t want to feel like that, but she was there. She was part of him.“Bright!” she exclaimed, her voice choked with emotion. “You’re awake! I’m so glad you’re alive! I didn’t know if I’d ever see you again.”In a flash, she crossed the room faster than I thought possible and threw herself into his arms. Even though Bright had the tray on his lap, she didn’t knock it over, which made me think she had been careful despite her uncontrollable impulse. She was truly excited to see him alive, like everyone else. She was happy to see her beloved. And I... for the third time, was the extra in my own room.I stood up abruptly to leave them alone. The truth is, I didn’t want to leave th

SophiaI was still sitting in front of him, offering him my company while his parents rested in the dining room, enjoying dinner with mine. The pack, on the other hand, remained willing, happy, and committed to keeping watch over the house because they didn’t want anything bad to happen again to the alpha and his right hand. They also did it out of fear, to protect each other, not just out of loyalty to my brother.James, meanwhile, was still in the room with his wife, who hadn’t wanted to leave his side for even a second since he set foot in the house. Bright was still in the same spot, his back leaning against the headboard of the bed, chewing slowly as if each bite was harder than the last because he looked so exhausted. Still, he ate. He ate everything he hadn’t been able to eat in days. He was thinner, and a shower was waiting for him soon. I offered him my bathroom and to change his bedsheets so he could rest in a clean bed. The sheets he was using were stained with dried blood,
