'Gabby can I see you for a moment?'
Lot looked up from typing the mails on her laptop before sending them out to clients.
This was her work, her life and her illustrations were her soul. If the illustration was flawed she had to start all over. She wanted less than perfection when it comes to whatever she was doing.
"I'll be right there", she said to Laila her partner and also the Co. CEO to their company. Company was too big of a word if people asked because they were only four working at there presently. But to Gabby, if you wanted something you had to manifest it and work towards it, nothing was going to be handed over to you on a platter of gold if you don't work for it.
"Give me a minute to finish up, I need to get this mails delivered before the end of the day".
Laila was her roommate back in college and since then they've developed a deep bond. Laila and Gabby had a thing for fashion and Gabby was good with the illustrations. So it was not a surprise when they decided to team up to start their own company. And though their company GALA enjoyed popularity and success, amongst fashion brands, they couldn't afford to slack. It will ruin all their hard work and they didn't want that.
She had given up everything to start this company, she had no intention of ruining her hard work. All Gabby wanted now was to expand her business to employ more workers because things were becoming too much for the employees present to handle alone.
As she sent the last mail she thought of everything that happened, the hurdles she had to go through, it seemed only fair she became successful she had no time to Reminisce on past mistakes if anything she had to forget them.
Smothering a sigh, She made sure all the mails were sent. satisfied she briskly shut down her laptop.
Rotating her chair Gabby turned towards Laila, smiling as she caught Laila looking at Tom's photo on her phone, Tom is Laila's boyfriend, they had been together for a long time now. Gabby always wanted what they had but after a heartbreak, she completely gave up on love or so she thought.
Laila looked up to catch Gabby staring at her phone.
"Why are you smiling?" Laila asked
"I couldn't help but notice your beautiful lock screen" Laila laughed. Gabby always teased her on how she bagged a handsome boyfriend not like Laila wasn't beautiful, they were both beautiful and they were a match made in heaven.
" on a serious note, I got a mail from Lee's Conglomerates"
"Ignore it".
"Why? If I may ask LEE is one big brand and working with their fashion line would help with boosting our business more"
"You know why, and you know I don't want to talk about it"
"Whatever your reasons are Gabby, please put this company first"
"Fine" Gabby said crossing her arms. Laila snickered, then grinned. As she had won in the argument.
Gabby needed Laila to get off her back and she was right, this would be a great boost for the company.
"I have another good news" Laila said.
"Spill already"
"I just got a mail from Forbes, they wanted to feature us on Forbes 30 under 30"
Astonishment vibrated through Gabby
"Tell me you are joking, the fucking Forbes. This is really good Laila"
Forbes was a magazine famous for features of articles on finance, industry, investing and marketing topics.
For Gabby and Laila this was like their first Oscar or Grammy, it would not only help their career but also help in publicizing their company.
"I know right, imagine the surprise on my face when I saw it" Laila said and several moments later they sat face to face grinning at each other like two giddy fools.
"It's our time Laila" she whispered
"Damn right it is" Gabby whispered back.
An article about them would really help GALA a lot. Their company would be tagged one of the most successful business ever known and so far they were on the right track.
"I need to go for lunch, since Andrew wasn't available to go get lunch for me"
Andrew is Gabby personal assistant, who took the day of for a health check up. So she had to do everything herself today, which included getting her lunch herself.
"Alright" Laila muttered.
Sliding into her blazer, Gabby headed out to the restaurant that was close to her office building.
"Oh Andrew look what you made me do" she grumbled.
She knew she was insensitive towards Andrew, but he always came through for Gabby, he did all his work as a PA. Andrew was a cancer survivor so he usually did a six month interval check up to make sure his cancer didn't resurface. It still made her angry though, she had to get lunch herself because she hated having to talk to strangers.
As she exited her office building, Gabby couldn't help surveying her surroundings for anyone she might know. It was a habit of hers that started after she was chased away from home by her parent, for not following their dream of becoming a doctor. She wanted something different for herself but their selfishness didn't make them see past that. it was always about them and how she brought disgrace to them. She didn't hate them but she didn't want to see them either.
She didn't want to get involved with anything that had to do with her past, including her parents.
She walked into the restaurant towards the far corner that housed one of the best tables because of its generous view. Which meant one thing VIP.
The fuck
Gabby stood transfixed in her tracks. Startled stares swept over her like ants marching over a picnic blanket. But she couldn't move. She couldn't stop herself from gazing at a major version of her past life, the one who got away.
Her heart beat, pumping pain and rage at the same time.
She couldn't do this again, four years had passed and this man, the man she gave her heart to still had the same effect on her.
Gabby stared at the numbers on the elevator as they contend, tapping her foot impatiently. It took forever until the elevator finally gave a ting and let her out. She felt so anxious and needed to keep her mind off anything that concerned the Lees; including Tan. She got a call from Laila earlier about the Lees contract though so she didn't have much of a choice but to think about it. It wouldn't come as a surprise though, if they wanted to call off the deal after what happened. She expected it and if she was being honest, she couldn't care less. It was a great deal and she would gain a lot by it but LEE wasn't the only company there was. She would take her business elsewhere. Even as she tries not to think of him, she hoped she wouldn't have to meet him today. It's been days and she had no idea how she would react. No she wasn't prepared at all. But who's to say? It wasn't like Tan needed to to be here by himself. She'd gone days without seeing him, hearing his voice, breathing in h
Tan stared down into the glass of whiskey he had in his hand. No matter how deep or how long he stared into the brown liquid, he couldn't get the image of Gabby's face, the last time he saw her, out of his mind. He really messed this one up big time. The memory of Gabby flipping free his hand was engraved in his mind. At what point would the alcohol stop the memories from intruding his thoughts, he often wondered and even after downing shot after shot. Even if he ever survived this phase of his life where he felt like his heart was ripped out of his cage whenever he was sober, his liver might have a hard time catching up.He hurt her. He failed to protect her from his world. He made excuses instead of fixing his problems and in the end, she let go of his hand. He didn't blame her one bit. If he were her, he'd shut him out of his life too. Tan didn't think he would ever be able to get the look of hurt he saw on her face out of his mind. God, she hated him and she had every right to too
Gabby was trying to make some toast for breakfast when she heard the doorbell ring. It was Sunday morning and she was hoping to sit in and rest. It didn't matter that she'd been doing that all weekend, what mattered was that she wasn't expecting anyone this morning. She was supposed to meet up with Laila later in the afternoon and it was too early for her to be here. Besides, she expected that they'll meet each other in a café for some coffee. It could be Tan too. She hadn't seen him since the dinner on Friday where she felt like they were saying goodbye to their relationship. For someone to disturb her blissful moment, it had to be very important she hoped. She dropped the bottle of jam she had in her hand and went to get the door. Maybe Tan finally came to have that important discussion he kept running away from. She could admit that the possibility of it being him caused a warm feeling to swirl in her chest that both excited and scared her. She knew she had fallen in love with Tan
Going to his parents' millions of dollars 10 bedrooms and 11 bath extravagant house on a Saturday night was many items below the list of what Tan has hoped to do with his evening. He didn't know what he might have done in his past life but someone up there seemed to be having a good laugh in his regard. Even as he really could be anywhere else, he was here, parked in front of their house, dreading what he will meet if he were to go in. He would go inside eventually. For Gabby, he reminded himself as he reached for the flowers he threw carelessly at the back of the chair. White roses. Gabby loved those. It wanted to turn his car around and take them to her. He wouldn't do that though, instead he would pick them up and go in through the front door and be polite. He'd do that to protect her. When his mother called him earlier in the day, he'd known within him that she was calling to warn him. "I assume your father mentioned the dinner with the Parks to you?" more like threatened but who
Chapter 16.Gabby and Tan were going out to dinner tonight.Tan stood at the entrance to her apartment looking dapper as always. He needs this night to forget all the drama with his family.“We should go.” She needlessly announced running her palms to smoothen the invisible crease on her dress. She didn’t know why she suddenly felt nervous around him. She’d known him almost all her adult life. She raised her gaze to meet Tan’s. He looked as handsome as ever. There was however a hint of trouble in his eyes. Maybe that’s why she felt so nervous or maybe she was reading into things that were not there. She let her eyes dip down to his chest accentuated by a pale blue shirt. The two buttons on the top were undone and sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. “You look gorgeous.” He said his voiced rough and husky. His eyes met hers and held the hot gaze she imagined hers held as well. She watched him as his eyes travelled over her, taking her in. her choice of outfit was a black satin dress
Tan was in his office the next morning. His had his chair turned to face the huge floor to ceiling windows in his office while basking in the warm sunlight enjoying the what-should-not-be-considered-soothing-but-is noise from the city. He had a lot of thing to do but he couldn’t help but indulge in musing over the night he had with Gabby. Waking up with her in his arms, he felt like he had just discovered a new kind of heaven. The way their bodies molded against each other creating the illusion that what they were feeling for each other was set in stone. Their relationship wasn’t defined yet, he wasn’t even sure if he could call it one, but Tan knew there was something that they shared and he wanted to enjoy this experience with her as long as he could have it because knowing his luck in life, their current situation might just end when he least expects it and shock them both. It wasn’t that he was trying to jinx himself; lord knows he already has enough share of bad luck, but it was
