The door slammed shut, and I turned to face Shannon. “You did this?” The disbelief in my voice surprised even me.

Shannon laughed. “Of course I did.” She walked closer and crouched over me. “Don’t you understand what is happening yet?” I kept my face blank and waited. Shannon always enjoyed boasting. The grin that spread across her face made me want to puke. “You took something that was mine. So, I took it back.”

“Brandon was never yours. He was my Goddess-given mate.” I gritted out. The pain was still wrecking my body. The blood pooled under me.

“So what? He was mine first.” She pushed up from the ground. “He was mine in high school, until your eighteenth birthday, and then, like a light switch, he was yours.” She walked away. “And that just couldn’t happen. I loved him, and I knew he loved me.”

“Shannon, you fucked everyone.” I called out the truth, and she whirled.

“HE WAS MINE.” She slung the whip over her shoulder. “And then you stole him with your fucking bond.”

“You are my sister.” I spat out, watching the whip, waiting for the strike.

She laughed again, this one a little more hysterical. “You are acting like my hatred of you is fucking new. Amy, we hated each other for your entire life.”

“But that changed.” I thought back over these past six years. “We grew up.”

Shannon threw back her head and laughed. Then she crouched and leaned over my broken body. Her voice dropped low enough that the guard wouldn’t overhear her. “I played you. Don’t you get that yet? I needed you to trust me so I could get close enough to take Brandon back. He would trust me more if I were your best friend struggling with my loyalty to you and telling him the truth about your affairs.” She turned back. “And he did. He ate it out of my fucking palm.” She stood back up and struck out with the whip, but this time she didn’t stop after the first stroke. She hit me over and over. The pool of blood grew faster with every strike. And I knew she was bent on killing me.

I held out my hands in surrender. I choked on the blood pooling in my mouth, but I coughed to clear my throat to offer one last plea. “Kill me if you must, but save my child.” I crawled closer, begging on my knees as I did the only thing I could to protect my son. “I’ll say whatever you want if you save my son.”

I saw a new light enter Shannon’s eyes. But the door slammed open, and Brandon came storming back in, with guards following him. Shannon gave a tiny growl as she stepped aside. “Grab her.”

Shannon reached for Brandon. “Where are you taking her?”

Brandon shook her off. “I’m going to end this fucking farce once and for all.” The guards grabbed me and ripped me off the floor. I screamed, and my vision faded to black. I hung there between the men in an awkward, painful display. “Take her to the med building.” Shannon gasped.

“But why?” Shannon stepped in front of the guard. “We can’t parade her through the pack. She still has supporters.”

Brandon laughed. “Like who? Her maids, her friends, her parents — they are all dead.”

His words slapped me in my face. “How?”

Brandon bent down and smiled, his eyes cold. “I already told you I wiped out your father's pack yesterday. Your mother must have felt her true mate dying, because she lost control. She went into labour.”

“So why would that kill her?”

Brandon laughed, but it was dark. “Because I’ve been slipping tiny amounts of wolfsbane and silver into her since Shannon told me the truth.” He reached out a hand and cupped my face. “Did you think I would allow anyone with your bloodline to live after you fucking betrayed me?” His thumb dug into the slice on my cheek, earning another screech from me. “She died on the table with her pup.” Shannon's face paled.

“How is my father?”

Brandon rolled his eyes. “He’s fine.” He turned his attention back to me. “But Shannon was right about not taking you through the pack.” He grinned. “I built a room especially for you.” He leaned back. “Take her to the white room.” He turned his back on me, but I heard a mild link that he sent out. Doctor, meet us in the white room. Now. He turned back to face me. And bring your surgical kit.

Shannon turned back to me, and a new sly smile broke across her face. She nodded towards the door, and the guards filed out, twisting out of the way of the silver bars to miss them. But they pressed my shredded back against the bars to protect their skin as they carried me through. The pain made everything go black, and my consciousness floated away.

“Ugh.” A groan from behind the chair had me slapping my hand over my mouth. “Are you trying to kill me, pup?”“I’m sorry.” I looked at my dad, but he was currently bent over, dying of laughter. “Dad?”“Did you see how far he fell back?” Tears were trailing down his cheeks as he cackled. “Rude.” Ronnie stood and dusted off his shirt. “The both of you are rude.”“I really didn’t mean it to do it.” I turned to my dad. “What did I do wrong?”“Well, for one thing, you definitely weren’t thinking about the size of the wisp. All your power rushed to fulfil your wish, and it was as big as it could get.” My dad wiped his eyes and his laughter finally trailed off. “But Ronnie, you know it doesn’t cause harm.”“I know, but I have never seen one that big, and it scared the shit out of me. Sue me.” Ronnie settled back into the chair. “Try to picture it the size of a softball.” My dad motioned me to try again. I closed my eyes. “Iccas lumin torcanta.” I pictured the light a lot smaller than befo

“A Lycan?” I traced my finger over the picture. “I thought they were extinct.”“Most are. Only one left is the king.” My dad pulled the book away from me and switched back to the page he had originally settled on. “Lycans have two forms. A wolf, much bigger than a normal werewolf. And a half human half wolf form, like the ones you see in the movies. Weres can partially shift, but nothing that comes close to the wolfman form.” He pushed the book back in front of me. “Now I want you to focus on this spell and try to create a wisp without losing the change in your scent.”“A wisp?” I looked at the page and skimmed it. It was a step to step spell on how to create a wisp of light. A spell useful for seeing in the dark and one that doesn’t create heat so you can hold it for long periods of time without being burned. “Yeah, this was the first spell I learned from my grandmother. She said it is the safest option as a wisp has no way to ‘burn down the village’.” He smirked as his eyes took on

“Grandma.” My dad stood and went to grab for her but she held up her hand. “I’m not here, boy-o. Not really here. She pulled me to you with that.” She pointed to the book.“Your book of shadows. I thought it was lost.” He turned back to the book and hovered his hands over it. “It wasn’t lost, it was hidden.” She looked over at me and smiled. “It was found by who it was meant to be found by.” She walked over and hovered her hands around my father’s face, almost cupping it. “I’ve missed you. But I can’t stay. Watch out for the darkness.”“I love you.” His whisper was soft.“And I you.” She leaned down to kiss his forehead, and then she was gone.He looked over at me and I could see the devastation there. “You met her?”I nodded. “She helped me find myself, my inner self, anyway, so that I could find my power. Even then, the Moon Goddess had to give me a push.”“You met the moon goddess?” Ronnie lept up and rushed over.“I don’t actually know.” I lifted a shoulder and looked back at my

“Okay. Now let’s try removing your scent all together.” My father tossed out and I had to think. What removes a smell from the air, other than air fresheners or candles?“I know this will sound stupid…” Ronnie started, but I just scoffed.“I’m picturing a scented candle in my mind to protect me from my shitty mate. Something that shouldn’t work, and it’s just ridiculous. I don’t think we can get any worse.” He pointed at me and smiled. “True. I was just thinking, a vacuum. It sucks everything in.” I debated the idea.“It doesn’t have to be a perfect idea. Just something you can focus on while your power does the thing you need.” My dad stood and walked over to me. “It’s more about an outlet for your power to flow through. Your power will flow the way you intend it, but you need something to start it.”I closed my eyes again and pictured a vacuum in my clearing. I angled the hose up and plugged the vacuum into an outlet that appeared on the pot, and clicked it on. The noise was deafen

“Close you eyes.” I had barely wiped the sleep from my eyes when my dad sat me down in his office with Uncle Ronnie. I settled deeper into the chair and closed my eyes. “Now I want you to pull Nix closer to the surface until your eyes shift.“The wolfs bane?”“Won’t interfere. We waited the last two days to clear it from your system.” My father settled behind his desk. That made sense. I have been shut in my room for the last few days, doing my best not to shift. And staying clear of other wolves has been my saving grace. “Close your eyes Amy.” I nodded. “Once Nix is close to the surface, I am going to have Ronnie scent you. Once your scent has shifted, we can work on the next step.”“If Uncle Ronnie can scent me, won’t that screw me over?” I peeked out of one eye and my dad shook his head. “We won’t be shifting fully, just bringing Nix forward enough so we can tell when you manage cloaking yourself.” I closed my eye again and shook myself. “Nix, I need you to come closer.” I whispe

We made our way back to the house and into my father’s office before I saw anyone else. An omega brought in plates of rare steak. “Dad?” My stomach clenched looking at the meat. I couldn’t tell if I wanted it, or my body was rejecting the idea of eating it.“You need a lot of meat. You wolf is begging you to shift. It’s her time to shine now that the power portion has been handled. But you have things to worry about other than shifting, and this will help keep Nix under wraps.” He nudged the plate in front of me. “Try it. I know it probably doesn’t look appetizing, but I promise you, you will enjoy it.”I reached for a fork and knife, but my nails shifted to claws before I could wrap my fingers around the utensils. I snatched up the meat and tore into it, blood dripping from the meat. It was still so rare. Nix settled farther back into the forest in my mind’s eye, and Megan settled next to her. I’m sorry Amy. I seem to be losing control. Nix started to pace as I continued to tear int
