Jonathan had no idea how long he had been sitting in the darkness with only a small patch of light from the lamp. Maria had come and had gone; even she wasn’t able to bring Jonathan out of his room, as he sat there his body shaking with silent sobs. His heart was heavy and so was his soul. While his heart was aching for the pain he had put Liza through, his conscience was ripping him apart one piece at a time as it replayed all those times when he had lied to Liza to spend some time with Stacy. He had always claimed that he loved Liza more than she loved him, because to him, she was like his life source, always giving him the strength to move forward. But now it seemed to him that the amount of love he had for Liza didn’t even hold a candle to the love Liza had for him. She had known about his sins and had still stayed by his side. She had hoped that he would come back for her, she had faith in their love, and she believed that their love would bring him back on the right path but when it came to Liza he had jumped to conclusions, assuming the worst. He had let Liza down and had given her the divorce papers at the first chance he got. ‘Had he not loved Liza enough? ‘He thought, the thought sending a prick through his heart.
Jonathan was experiencing a tide of emotions, so violent that it was impossible for him to survive through it. He wanted to give in so that he could be numb but he couldn’t because somewhere in the back of his mind there was a hope that maybe if he repented enough if he was punished enough if he begged enough Liza would forgive him. But who would determine his punishment? He knew that even death wasn’t painful enough in comparison to what Liza had gone through.
He was lost; he didn’t know what to do. So he simply got up, picked up the box of letters, and without bothering to change out of his rumpled clothes, he drove to the hospital. On reaching the hospital he went straight to the room where Liza lay. He was clueless about what to say to Alice and as much as he was ashamed of himself, he was also frightened of Alice. He remembered how his own twin had threatened to hunt him down if even a tear slipped from Liza’s eyes. He had promised to take care of her best friend and he had not only betrayed Liza but had also broken his promise to Alice. He had hurt Liza in the worst possible way. With a sigh he opened the door to the room, praying to his guardian angel that Alice was not there.
It seemed that even his guardian angel had abandoned him because sitting in front of him was Alice. She was stroking Liza’s hair as she lay there still and emotionless. It came crashing down on him that he was the one that was responsible for Liza’s accident. He quietly walked to the other side of Liza, extending his hand to caress her cheeks. “Don’t touch her” Alice said in a low and cold voice. “Please Alice, I really need to” replied Jonathan his voice weak and broken. Alice looked up, shocked at the defeated tone of her brother. She had never heard him sound so weak.
Her brother who was never seen in anything else other than his crisp and professional attire was now wearing crumpled clothes. His always well-combed hair was a mess, his skin looked deathly pale and he had bags under his eyes. It seemed like her brother had aged several years in few hours. She was angry at him no scratch that she was so furious that she could rip him right now for what he had done to Liza but even her anger wasn’t enough to keep her from going to his side and hugging him. She had never seen him look so defeated and so broken.
“What should I do Alice?” he questioned as Alice hugged him.
“I don’t know Jonathan, You hurt her too much. I don’t even know if she will ever forgive you and I don’t think she should. Not after what you have done. If I were in her position, I would have left you in a second but no that stupid girl had to stay for you. I told her countless times to let me knock some sense into you, to leave you but she stuck to her decision claiming that you had just lost your path that you will come back to her. You don’t deserve her Jonathan and you definitely don’t deserve to be loved by someone like her” Alice sobbed. Her voice was hoarse and tears were running down her cheeks continuously, soaking Jonathan’s shirt. “Please Alice, you know I can’t live without her. I am nothing without her, just a shell. She is my heart and she is my soul.” Jonathan said his voice cracking.
“Think about how you felt when you saw that photo of Liza hugging someone and then multiply it by 100, then you might get some idea how she felt every single day. Maybe then you might feel a 1% of pain of what she felt every day and even then you might not be able to understand the pain she went through.” Alice said, wiping her tears and regaining her composure. Jonathan’s expression turned to one of pain as he remembered how he felt when he had thought that Liza had cheated on him. Alice got up and after giving one last glance to Liza she left.
Jonathan sat there, his fingers stroking Liza’s hair and his mind pondering upon Alice’s words. He had seen Liza only once, hugging some man and he had felt jealousy and rage so intense that it could have blown up a whole city; he couldn’t even imagine what Liza had gone through. The question here was did he want to? Was he brave enough to face the mistakes he had made and the pain he had caused to Liza? Could he live with himself after knowing the extent of the damage he had caused to the woman he loved?
It was still dark outside and the small bulb was the only source of light in the dreary hospital room. Even the deep green curtains were drawn close, blocking all the light coming from outside. Jonathan had now taken to holding Liza’s hand. He sat in the small chair beside her bed as he studied the shadow cast by the light on her pale face. Liza’s brown hair was matted and her cheeks had sunken in making her look weak. Jonathan sighed, thinking how much he wished to lay down beside her but the grey hospital bed was not big enough to fit them both and he was afraid of hurting Liza, so he stayed put in his place.Jonathan had been building up his courage to read the letters for hours now but he still seemed to be afraid to read them. The beautiful box that was lying in his lap felt heavy to him. He knew that if he truly wanted to earn Liza’s forgiveness, he was going to have to read them; he was going to have to understand the pain Liza went through. Gulping, he
Jonathan wiped the tears from Liza’s cheeks, the same tears which had taken form in his eyes but had dropped down on Liza’s cheeks just like his mistakes. The tears left a faint mark behind on Liza’s pale skin just like his betrayal had left scars on her heart. It was getting harder for Jonathan to live with himself, each letter he read brought on a new wave of pain and guilt. But he knew that his punishment was not over so he in the haze of his pain he picked up another letter not noticing that it was dated way back, it was dated back to the time when he was still loyal, still capable of being loved, and still happy.‘26th November 2012To JonathanDo you know that you are the best boyfriend ever? If not then I will make sure you do. I will chant it every day if that is what it takes for you to believe it. Though I am not sure if Boyfriend and girlfriend is even the correct word for what we are now. These terms seem
Stacy sat on a metal chair near the reception area. Her brown eyes were a bit red from all the crying she had done in the past few days. She had always taken pride in the fact that she never made wrong decisions in her life but now she could no longer claim that. She was wearing a fitted white skirt suit and her blonde hair was in a neat bun. She should have felt confident but as she sat there waiting for Jonathan to come she couldn’t help but feel nervous. She had joined Jonathan’s company only with one goal in her mind which was to create a place for herself; she didn’t have the intention of falling for Jonathan. But the more she saw him interacting with his employees, the more she began to like him. He genuinely cared for her welfare and at that time she didn’t realize that what she had was mere infatuation. Things accelerated quickly after their drunken kiss, she fell for him even more never realizing that he would never love her back. It didn&rsqu
Jonathan sat in Liza’s room, stroking her hair. It had been a week since Stacy had visited. Even though he had broken things off with Stacy he couldn’t help but cringe when he remembered. Stacy was definitely an attractive and intelligent woman, but she was nothing compared to his Liza. He wondered why he had ever started fooling around with Stacy when he had the woman he loved the most waiting for him at their home. He loved everything about her, her smile, the way she laughed when she found something funny, the way she blushed, her habit of sniffing him, or how she bit her lip when she was nervous. He was in love with every single trait of her. There was no part of Liza which he didn’t love. She consumed him completely. He couldn’t even remember a single reason why he did all those things with Stacy. He wondered if he could ever forgive himself for the mistake he made. ‘No’, he thought to himself ‘It wasn’t a mistake it was a sin tha
Jonathan had been right when he assumed that he wouldn’t be able to sleep even if he wanted to. The bed in his room was way more comfortable than the dingy hospital chair but still, he felt edgy while sleeping on it. It felt too wide and too empty without Liza beside him. He sighed and sat up, his back hitting the pillows arranged behind him. He glanced at the box of letters warily. He knew that once he started reading them, there will be no going back. It was true that he had read many of the letters before, but at that time he was trying to know how Liza felt but now reading those letters were a form of penance for him. A way to punish himself for hurting Liza. He picked up a random letter gingerly and opened it. Just by looking at the handwriting, he knew that it was from one of those times when Liza was really happy, from the time when he hadn’t messed up his life. There was a sway in her writing, he remembered how Liza’s handwriting changed with her moods. Whe
Jonathan folded the letter he was reading and picked up another one. It looked almost green in the golden light shining above him. He leaned back and rested his head on the Pillow as he shifted around to adjust himself. He had been reading the letters since the past three hours and yet he was not even close to finishing them. He discovered a new part of Liza every time he read a letter. He thought he knew Liza inside out but every time he read a letter he came to know something new about her. He wondered if she would have ever given him those letters if he hadn’t found them by mistake. He propped himself up on his elbows, making the mauve sheets crinkle beneath him, and started reading the letter,“24th February 2014To Jonathan,I am sorry Jonathan for being the way that I am. It’s been such a long time since we have gotten together and I am still not able to open up about my past. It’s difficult for me to talk abou
‘16th November 2015To JonathanYou are killing me, Jonathan. I can’t bear it any longer; I am at my breaking point. What have I done to deserve this? I have tried everything, done everything to bring you back to me but you distance yourself more with every effort I make. You rarely smile at me now, hell I rarely see you now. Either you are at the office or you are away on your ‘business trip’ and it kills me to know that every second that you are away from me you are getting closer to her.My nightmares have gotten worse now since you are never there to fend them away from me. I wake up to an empty bed and an empty house every day. I don’t even find any sign to know that whether you came back to home last night or not. I miss you, Jonathan. Where did that old Jonathan go? The one who used to love me endlessly, the one who used to hold me while I slept, or the one who kissed me awake. It’s been so long since I have slept in yo
Jonathan was sleeping on the small plastic chair beside Liza. His hand was still holding Liza’s hand as if she would somehow vanish in thin air. His shirt was rumpled and his hair was a mess. He had spent his whole day waiting for Liza to wake up. He had refused to move from his place beside Liza for even a moment. As the day passed and Liza made no sign of waking the light in his eyes began to dim little by little and his heart grew a little less hopeful. It was around the time when he was dreaming of holding Liza in his arms once again, that the heart rate monitor began to go crazy. All those green little lines which held Liza’s life began to go haywire. Jonathan jolted awake, his eyes flickering to the machine which gave him hope that Liza was still alive. He panicked as it beeped in frenzy and rushed to call the doctor. It is said that Light travels faster than sound, however, when Liza woke up she first heard the consistent beeping of the machine first, the k
