Anya’s pov
My hands clammed in shock as the import of my father’s words hit me. A feeling of dread settled in my belly as I tried to wrap my head around the sudden turn of events.
Some few hours ago we had all been on the edge following the scandal and impending investigation.
My mind raced fast trying to piece events of the day together.
Nothing of interest happened except Don Silver’s visit.
My eyes widened upon remembrance and the feeling of dread intensified in my belly.
“Who?”, I gasped my question a mere whisper against the deafening silence at the table.
Father avoided my gaze, his jaw clenching.
“Kian DaSilver, Don Silver’s grandson.”
My mouth dropped open.
The name DaSilver had been making rounds ever since Kian DaSilver took over his father’s position as Capo after his gruesome murder.
Rumors churned that he was irrevocably cruel, pitiless and built like a bull.
My frequent eavesdropping at father’s office had made me hear father curse at him for drug routes he had lost to him.
Father hated him, that I knew, and so it meant something was definitely amiss.
“Why do I have to marry him?”
Father slid his phone across the table landing right in front of me.
“INVESTIGATION INTO MORETTI INDUSTRIES HALTED;Feds announce…”
I gasped in surprise at the headline for the afternoon news I had missed.
“The investigation, the rumors-they we’re going to destroy us.Don Silver offered a solution.”,father said his voice laced with a desperation I rarely witnessed.
“This alliance is a strategic one,Anya. It’s going to cement our standing in our world. Our enemies are going to think twice before they make any move on us”,he added.
I looked at Father, but he was staring at his wine glass.
And mom was so focused on a stain on the cloth that covered the table.
It dawned on me that this had already been discussed and agreed on,but that didn’t mean I couldn’t try to change my fate.
“Can I refuse?”,I found myself asking, looking at the faces of the only people I considered family.
Mom’s head shot up at my question, her look almost imploring me not to provoke Father.
“You cannot refuse,Anya. This is the only way to save our family. And you know that double crossing the Silvers, will be more scandalous than that article fiasco.”,Father replied standing up.
“This is the only way child. To save our name. And our business. You will marry Kian DaSilver.”, he added firmly.
I nodded lightly in response.
“Come on,” Mom said, standing. “Let’s take a walk in the garden.”
I followed her. The air outside was warm and humid.
I glanced at my mother, her face a mixture of concern and a distant look I couldn’t place.
“Anya”,she began softly facing me.
“I know that you must have envisioned things in a different way. To fall in love and get married in a fairytale dress right?”,she chuckled nervously.
“And I understand how hard this might be for you to watch all your dreams taken away by a single decision. But dear, loyalty in our world is everything. It is what keeps us and our families together.”
I swallowed hard, unsure of what to say.
“Your father has fought hard to bring our family and business to this height, and right now you are the only one who can keep it together. Double crossing Don Silver will be the most foolish thing to do,Anya.”
“You’re the saviour of this family. This alliance will send ripples across the entire terrain”, she continued clinging desperate unto my hands.
“What about my happiness,Ma?.What about love?”,I sounded my protest with a trembling voice.
I was torn between my love for my family and my own desires.
I knew what it will mean to my family if I accepted this marriage.
“ Love doesn’t come first in our lives,Anya. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the greater good of others around us. Love eventually finds us when we least expect it,child.”
I caught on the distant look of comfort on her face which made my little protest bubble die.
Mom had once shared her own experience when her parents arranged for her to marry dad to seal a business agreement between their families.
Cassio and I were the result of their union. And I couldn’t tell if they had eventually found love, but I knew dad regarded mom with a level of understanding.
It was all I could hope for myself.
“I will do it.”, I whispered.
“My child. I knew you would understand.”
“I should find your father and tell him about your response.”, a look of relief was present on her face.
“You are stronger than you think Anya. You can do this”,squeezing my arm reassuringly she stepped back into the house to find my father.
I fought my hardest to keep the tears that threatened to fall.
I had to do this for my family. To save us.To save our business.
“Anya?”
“Hi ,brother”, I quickly dabbed my eyes and turned to face him with a half smile.
“You don’t have to pretend with me,you know.”he said taking my hands.
“Anya you can still say no to this.”
“Say no”, I scoffed.
“And then what? Be at the mercy of Don Silver?”
“I was working on something. I just needed more time. But dad had to agree to this messed up arrangement.”
“Time was the one thing that wasn’t on our side Cassio. You should have worked faster.Done something!” ,I shouted.
A flicker of pain flashed on his face.
“Ca-ssio, I’m sorry I didn’t mean it like that.”
“No you are actually right. I should have don something sooner. I’m sorry little sis.”
“It is fine Cassio. This is what needs to be done.”
“I may not have done anything to avert this, but I’m definitely not going to leave things as they are.”, Cassio said as he entangled me from his embrace.
“What are you going to do?”, I asked in fear.
“It’s time to pay Kian DaSilver a visit.”
“Cassio ,no don’t. Don’t do anything stupid”
My plea fell on deaf ears as he stomped out of the garden.
CHAPTER 16ANYA“Why aren't you eating, Anya?” Dad's voice boomed across the table, making me grip the fork in my hands even tighter.Because I can't help but wonder why you had to throw me in the very mess that you created dad!“I'm not hungry…” I mumbled, trying to keep my voice steady but the crack at the end gave it away.“This is the third time today. What tantrum are you trying to throw, Anya?” He asked, his eyes narrowed down into a daring glare as I lifted my eyes to answer him.But mum was quick to beat me to it…like always.“I remember Anya doesn't like having meatballs in her meals.” Mum cuts in with a smile, drawing dad's awareness to the stabbed marks in the ones on my plate. He frowned, clearly not happy with my picky habits. “That will have to change this instant because the Silvas are known for their high tastes in Italian foods, especially ones like these. We wouldn't want to cause a stir for them now, would we?”A stir? Was that all I was to them?A scandal?“But the
Chapter 15KIAN“Are you alone right now?” He asked, his voice cold and tight with urgency. A complete contrast to what his annoying commanding tone sounded like.I scrunched my face into a frown and side glanced at Darryl who seemed to be interested in the suits in his hold more than I was.“Uh…no? I'm with Darryl. At the shop like you requested.” I pressed my lips into a thin line. “Is there a problem? Did you hear something?”“Okay, I need you to listen in closely, Kian.” He responded, stressing out my name like he needed my full attention to whatever he was about to say. This made me straighten up and lean in closer, a sense of dread creeping in my gut at where all this was going.“I'm listening.”“Have you seen appearances of men in matching suits lately?” He inquired, the sound of fingers drumming against a desk echoing through the call line. “Matching ties? Watches? Rings?”“What?” I immediately turned my head to peer around, frustration hitting when I realized that I was still
Chapter 14KIAN“I can't believe this old man set me up!” “Calm down, Kian. It's just a wedding store, not some minefield.” Daryl facepalmed with a sigh and whispered behind my ears, “You're scaring the poor shopkeepers. You might want to think twice about pulling this off in the public….you never know which camera is on.”The hell I cared about paparazzi or the media now.I'm pretty sure they didn't care about me either, so why should I!I frowned and turned around to see that a woman was hurdled up with two other women in the corner, her lips trembling as she tried to voice out what sounded like a plea.I let out a scoff under my breath and adjusted the touch of my suit as I walked to the counter. “Who’s the one in charge here?”“I-I am, sir.” The blondie that had her lips shaking rose her hands in the air and forced a smile that seemed like she really didn't want to be there.Well, I was glad that the feeling was somewhat mutual. At least someone knew when to keep her down and not
Anya’s POVI gently closed my door and leaned against it with a sigh. I did not bother to turn the lights on, preferring to stay in the darkness. The only light that trickled in was the faint glow of the moon. Finally I was alone. Alone with my thoughts and feelings.I was engaged. Engaged to be married to Kian DaSilver. There was no turning back now. Not that I would have anyway.I let myself feel the ring that sat heavily on my finger. It felt foreign. An intrusion. Which was what it was exactly. An intrusion into the perfect bubble I once had.It was a white gold ring with a big diamond in the center sandwiched between two smaller diamonds.Under the soft glow of the moonlight it sparkled.I had to admit that it was beautiful.I wondered if Kian had chosen it himself. I would be surprised if he had.He hadn’t looked like someone who would be interested in going ring shopping for a bride he didn’t even choose. If I ever doubted that my fiancé disliked me today was a perfect reminder.
Kian I stood among my family, my posture rigid as I tried to maintain my composure. The engagement ceremony was in full swing. I could not believe that Grandfather’s idea was actually materializing. There was nothing I had not done to change his mind in the last two months. I had weeded out a majority of our opponents and secured more deals for us, all in the bid to make him change his mind. But he remained adamant on the engagement. Nothing was going to make him change his mind. I forced myself to smile as the guests flickered around to offer their congratulations to me. I had been in this game for far too long to know that half of them were not genuine. The was always a threat laced beneath each one of them. But the facade had to be kept on. I gulped down the remnants of my glass which I had lost count of in frustration. “Chill man.”, Darryl said eyeing my empty glass. “The ceremony hasn’t even started.” “I don’t give a damn about the ceremony.” “I know you don’t but at l
Chapter 11 : Engagement PartyAnya’s POVNo matter how much I wanted time to slow down,so I have more time to prepare, the two months came by two fast.It felt like the universe in itself was against me.It was the day of the engagement party. Even if I wanted to pretend as if I had forgotten about the engagement party, the immense decoration in the house wouldn’t have allowed me to.Mother was busy ordering the servants around, making sure the house was spotless and nothing went wrong. She paid no attention to me.I couldn’t tell if it was her own way of trying to lessen her guilt. The party was going to be a big celebration, a perfect statement to redeem ourselves as Father had put it.It was only right being that the The DaSilvers were a very respected and powerful family in our circles. The heads of other respectable families had also being invited. The thought of having to put up a fake smile and a show of excitement in the presence of all the many g
