I watched the smile on my father’s face quickly morph into a grim as he shot up from his chair.

The movement caused his juice glass to tumble over ,spilled its contents on the floor.

“Salvatore!”,my mom stood from her chair.

My father’s body tensed and his face turned stone.

“Anya ,the television.Nowww!”he roared.

I quickly rushed and turned it on,my body buzzing at the tone of his voice. “CEO By Day,Mafia Boss By Night:Is Moretti Industries just a front?”

The news caption read.

I sucked in a breath as I turned to face the rest of my family.

Their faces mirrored mine and the voice of the newscaster faded as we regarded each other.

“Salvatore”,my mom whispered grabbing unto his arm.

“Fuck!”,Cassio my brother hissed.

“This is bullshit.”

This wasn’t the first time news about our family business had reached the public ear.

But never had it been so blatant ,never so damning.

It had always remained whispers and rumours in the shadows, even if people suspected it.

Fear, cold and sharp snaked its way down my spine.

Did this mean there was finally evidence to prove that our millions were not all that legitimate after all,a nagging voice in my head quizzed.

The air around us crackled with tension.

“This cannot be happening.”,my dad rasped his voice rough.

“Cassio,my office now!And get Stan.”,dad roared as he shook my mom’s hand off his.

Without a glance in both our directions they disappeared into the wing where his office was located.

“Mom”,I muttered as I walked to her.

I slowly watched her fix up her expression as she watched me.

“Your father is going fix this.”,she said with a smile but a tone that lack the conviction.

“Go to your room.”

Immediately I slipped into the comfort of my room I reached for my phone.

I needed to find out more.

The broadcast had been on the city’s largest news channel so definitely social media had heard of it.

“CEO by day,Mafia Boss By Night:Is Moretti Industries Just a Front?”

Alleged sources claim that the CEO of Moretti industries,Salvatore Moretti might be engaged in more that what meets the eye.The FBI says that an eye witness to the recent drug trafficking in Montenegro has mentioned that Salvatore Moretti is the brain behind crime...”

My fears returned with full force and I had to hold unto my bed for support. The news was on every news blog and I had been tagged to each freaking post.

Different renditions of the articles and the media space was buzzing with comments.

I knew without a doubt that this wasn’t good without anyone having to tell me. I wondered how dad was going to rectify this and silence the rumours.

This was far beyond any scrutiny our family had come under ever since I was born.

We had perfected our facade over the years and posed as a normal family to the outside world.Being part of the mafia required that one learn the act of composure and pretense.

And my mom had made sure that we honed our skills in that aspect.

Never once had we faltered or slipped in our act.

We always had rehearsed answers for every question that was posed at us and the media had bought the story of Moretti Industries being our source of wealth.

I wondered if father’s connections could save us this time with the FBI being involved and all.

My phone continued to buzz incessantly and it was almost impossible to ignore.Switching it off I crept out of my room to father’s office wing.

Almost halfway there,I saw Stan moving in that same direction.

I quickly ducked before he had the chance to see me.I wasn’t allowed in that wing of the house unless I had been summoned by dad.But I needed to break the rules today and find out what was happening.

“Come in.”,dad’s voice snapped at Stan’s knock.

“You sent for me,Mr Moretti.”

“Cut with the formalities,Stan.”,he bellowed shoving the newspaper across his desk.

“Have you seen this?”,he asked watching him intently.

Stan studied the headline, his brow furrowing slightly.

“Bullshit!”,his voice was tight and clipped.

“Yes ,bullshit!”

“But the damage’s been done. How did this slip past your notice? How did you not know this was going to be published?”

Dad approached him,his steps delibrate, eyes cold and unyielding.

I’d never seen dad like this.

My gaze quickly moved to Stan whose face remained an impassive mask. Dad stopped a few feet away from him and they locked gazes, which I could feel the intensity from where I peeped.

“Boss this is unsubstantiated.Likely an attempt to-“

“Do not patronize me Stan! This was your fucking job. Do I need to teach you how is done? This was never supposed to be published.”,Dad shoved him against the wall.

“The Montenegro operation was yours. And you left eye witnesses?”

“You have twenty four hours to find the bastard of a journalist who published this and bring him to me.And the so called eye witness the FBI have.I don’t care how you do it,Stan.

Turn the city upside down if you have to and spare no costs.I want the cunt squirming in his blood and begging as I wrangle his life out of him with my bare hands.”,dad’s voice had a dangerous edge to it.

I shivered at the tone of his voice. I knew what dad was out for...blood. Whoever was behind this had attacked Dad where it hurts the most and I was very sure of the fate that awaited him,if he was found.

Stories of dad’s brutality had drifted to my ears over the course of the years, and I wasn’t surprised.

“Yes Boss.”,Stan inclined his head in a curt nod.

“And while at it ,make those fucking articles disappear from the net! Take them down!”

I quickly left from where I peeped to my room.

Catching the glimpse of Stan’s expression I knew that in the next twenty four hours his hand were going to be covered in blood.

We were a mafia family after all.

CHAPTER 16ANYA“Why aren't you eating, Anya?” Dad's voice boomed across the table, making me grip the fork in my hands even tighter.Because I can't help but wonder why you had to throw me in the very mess that you created dad!“I'm not hungry…” I mumbled, trying to keep my voice steady but the crack at the end gave it away.“This is the third time today. What tantrum are you trying to throw, Anya?” He asked, his eyes narrowed down into a daring glare as I lifted my eyes to answer him.But mum was quick to beat me to it…like always.“I remember Anya doesn't like having meatballs in her meals.” Mum cuts in with a smile, drawing dad's awareness to the stabbed marks in the ones on my plate. He frowned, clearly not happy with my picky habits. “That will have to change this instant because the Silvas are known for their high tastes in Italian foods, especially ones like these. We wouldn't want to cause a stir for them now, would we?”A stir? Was that all I was to them?A scandal?“But the

Chapter 15KIAN“Are you alone right now?” He asked, his voice cold and tight with urgency. A complete contrast to what his annoying commanding tone sounded like.I scrunched my face into a frown and side glanced at Darryl who seemed to be interested in the suits in his hold more than I was.“Uh…no? I'm with Darryl. At the shop like you requested.” I pressed my lips into a thin line. “Is there a problem? Did you hear something?”“Okay, I need you to listen in closely, Kian.” He responded, stressing out my name like he needed my full attention to whatever he was about to say. This made me straighten up and lean in closer, a sense of dread creeping in my gut at where all this was going.“I'm listening.”“Have you seen appearances of men in matching suits lately?” He inquired, the sound of fingers drumming against a desk echoing through the call line. “Matching ties? Watches? Rings?”“What?” I immediately turned my head to peer around, frustration hitting when I realized that I was still

Chapter 14KIAN“I can't believe this old man set me up!” “Calm down, Kian. It's just a wedding store, not some minefield.” Daryl facepalmed with a sigh and whispered behind my ears, “You're scaring the poor shopkeepers. You might want to think twice about pulling this off in the public….you never know which camera is on.”The hell I cared about paparazzi or the media now.I'm pretty sure they didn't care about me either, so why should I!I frowned and turned around to see that a woman was hurdled up with two other women in the corner, her lips trembling as she tried to voice out what sounded like a plea.I let out a scoff under my breath and adjusted the touch of my suit as I walked to the counter. “Who’s the one in charge here?”“I-I am, sir.” The blondie that had her lips shaking rose her hands in the air and forced a smile that seemed like she really didn't want to be there.Well, I was glad that the feeling was somewhat mutual. At least someone knew when to keep her down and not

  • Broken SilverCode   Chapter 13

Anya’s POVI gently closed my door and leaned against it with a sigh. I did not bother to turn the lights on, preferring to stay in the darkness. The only light that trickled in was the faint glow of the moon. Finally I was alone. Alone with my thoughts and feelings.I was engaged. Engaged to be married to Kian DaSilver. There was no turning back now. Not that I would have anyway.I let myself feel the ring that sat heavily on my finger. It felt foreign. An intrusion. Which was what it was exactly. An intrusion into the perfect bubble I once had.It was a white gold ring with a big diamond in the center sandwiched between two smaller diamonds.Under the soft glow of the moonlight it sparkled.I had to admit that it was beautiful.I wondered if Kian had chosen it himself. I would be surprised if he had.He hadn’t looked like someone who would be interested in going ring shopping for a bride he didn’t even choose. If I ever doubted that my fiancé disliked me today was a perfect reminder.

  • Broken SilverCode   Chapter 12: Engagement Party

Kian I stood among my family, my posture rigid as I tried to maintain my composure. The engagement ceremony was in full swing. I could not believe that Grandfather’s idea was actually materializing. There was nothing I had not done to change his mind in the last two months. I had weeded out a majority of our opponents and secured more deals for us, all in the bid to make him change his mind. But he remained adamant on the engagement. Nothing was going to make him change his mind. I forced myself to smile as the guests flickered around to offer their congratulations to me. I had been in this game for far too long to know that half of them were not genuine. The was always a threat laced beneath each one of them. But the facade had to be kept on. I gulped down the remnants of my glass which I had lost count of in frustration. “Chill man.”, Darryl said eyeing my empty glass. “The ceremony hasn’t even started.” “I don’t give a damn about the ceremony.” “I know you don’t but at l

Even if I wanted to pretend as if I had forgotten about the engagement party, the immense decoration in the house wouldn’t have allowed me to.Mother was busy ordering the servants around, making sure the house was spotless and nothing went wrong. She paid no attention to me.I couldn’t tell if it was her own way of trying to lessen her guilt. The party was going to be a big celebration, a perfect statement to redeem ourselves as Father had put it.It was only right being that the The DaSilvers were a very respected and powerful family in our circles. The heads of other respectable families had also being invited. The thought of having to put up a fake smile and a show of excitement in the presence of all the many g
