CHAPTER 21

ZYLIAH'S POV

I pushed my cart slowly through the vegetable aisle, scanning shelves for parsley to use in tonight’s dinner. The boys were spending the day with Delia, and Natasha had gone along with them too.

I was still giving her the cold shoulder, so she was trying to soften me up by doting on my boys. I had no issues with whatever she wanted to do for them, but for now, I didn’t want to talk to her.

Finally seeing the last bunch of parsley, I hurried to go grab it before someone else did. Just as I got my fingers on it, another hand reached for the same bunch at the exact moment.

I tossed it into my cart in one fast motion, not giving them a chance to grab it first.

I lifted my head, my curiosity already buzzing, to see who I’d just beat to the parsley. My left brow twitched in surprise.

Suddenly remembering his attitude from a few days back, my expression morphed to something unfriendly.

I pivoted my cart sharply and steered it straight toward the checkout count

CHAPTER 24 SABRINA’S POV “Fynn, what is wrong with you? Your wife is in the hospital. You need to come see her.” A pause. “Why can’t you show some support? This is my daughter we’re talking about.” Another beat of silence. “No, she didn’t lose the baby.” A pause again. “Fine, I’ll be expecting you.” A tear slipped quietly from my eye and slid slowly across my cheek. “He didn’t want to come, right?” I turned my head to face my mother. “You’re awake. When did you wake up?” she asked, concern masking her expression. “Long enough to hear you lie just to get him to show up.” I sniffled, my heart breaking. “How did you know I lied? You didn’t lose the baby…” “Don’t lie to me, Mom. I bled right before I passed, and it’s always the same. That’s how it started with the first miscarriage. I know what it means by now.” Sadness blended into her concern as she held my hand, squeezing it comfortingly. “You’re not barren, that’s something. You can still get pregnant. You and your hu

CHAPTER 23 ZYLIAH’S POV “A visitor is here for Miss Zyliah.” One of Delia’s maids came in to inform us. “A visitor for me?” I blinked. Who even knew I was living here? Since I’d been back, I’d rarely associated with anyone except for Delia and Natasha, even though we still weren’t on talking terms. “Is it a man or a woman?” Delia tilted her head, suddenly interested. We were in the living room, playing indoor games. Natasha was there too, though her mood was hard to read. She’d only returned a few minutes ago from seeing her boyfriend in prison. “A woman,” the young girl said. “A woman?” I raised a brow, confused by the answer. “Let her in,” Delia ordered. “Yes, ma’am.” The maid went ahead to do as she’d been instructed. “Let her in? What if she’s got shady intentions?” I asked, eyeing Delia. “She obviously can’t overpower all three of us. And really, if she meant harm, she’d already be standing where the maid was a second ago, demanding what she wants, probably with

CHAPTER 22 SABRINA’S POV My eyes fluttered open and a huge smile blossomed—I felt like it was going to be a good day for me. I touched the other side of the bed and groaned. It was empty and cold. It had been a long while since Fynn suddenly changed. He no longer woke me with kisses, or brought me breakfast in bed. Waking me up with kisses ended after the third miscarriage, along with breakfast in bed. The fourth miscarriage ended the calls he used to make during work. By the fifth miscarriage, I was struggling to make my husband look at me. I’d smile and pretend all was well, but it really wasn’t. A sigh escaped me. Well, there was nothing I could do. But this one was a boy—the first boy. Others had been girls. So I should feel good about this particular one, at least. I’d recently stopped going out or engaging in activities that would stress me. I needed to give birth to this baby full term. I took my bath and was getting ready for breakfast when my phone rang. “Hel

CHAPTER 20 ZYLIAH’S POV “Your phone’s ringing.” Delia wheeled into the kitchen, my phone on her lap. “Fynn?” I asked without turning, more focused on the cake batter before me. I’d felt like cooking, even though it was late. It was one of my favorite hobbies, and I was proud to say I was exceptionally good at it. Delia and Natasha used to encourage me to start up my own restaurant, but back then, family’s business had been more important than branching out on my own. Maybe it was time to think about it. “Yes. How did you know?” she asked. I shrugged. “I told him I wanted to meet with him.” “But it’s late. Almost twelve, plus you’ve already gone to see him this evening.” “Do I look like I’m going?” I carefully poured the perfectly mixed batter into the star-shaped pan. “So why did you tell him you wanted to see him if you weren’t going to go?” Natasha walked in then to get a bottle of water from the fridge. I stepped aside, careful not to brush against her.

CHAPTER 19 SABRINA’S POV “Where have you been, Fynn? It’s past the usual time you come home from work.” I was already duly vexed. His face contorted in annoyance as impatience flickered in his eye. “I’m tired, Sabrina. Now is not the time for this.” He made to leave, but I stepped into his path. “For the past week, Fynn, this is the excuse you’ve been giving. Where were you?” “I was at work. Satisfied?” he snapped back. “You liar!” I spat in his face, on the verge of tears. “I called your secretary. She told me you left an hour before the usual closing time, which is 5 pm. It’s 11 pm now. Where have you been for the past 7 hours?” His eyes flashed with growing anger. “When did you start tracking my movements? And who gave you the right to call my secretary? How did you even get her number?” “You have no right throwing questions around, Fynn. I should be the one asking the questions. Where have you been? You have a pregnant wife at home, but you don’t care about that at all!
