Murielle’s POV

Rook stood.

He didn't hurry into it, didn't raise his voice to be heard over the murmur.

He simply stood, whitewash still dripping down one side of his face, his eyes catching the lantern light wrong for a second, brighter than amber had any right to be.

The lawn went quiet around him before he said a single word, a quiet that only settles around someone used to being obeyed without needing to ask twice.

"She tripped." His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. "I caught her

Dorian’s POV I opened my mouth to give it to him.My hand found the inside of my coat instead, some old habit reaching for a button that wasn't there, and closed around something small and carved, worn smooth from three years of my own thumb running over it without meaning to.I hadn't touched it on purpose since the trial.A wooden bird. Two notches for wings, a beak that was little more than a nick gone crooked. She carved it the summer before everything happened, the same week one of the boys she trained gave up twice in one afternoon trying to learn whittling from his father. He was ready to hand the knife back and call himself hopeless at it.She took the wood from him instead and made this, badly, right in front of him."See," she told him, holding it up. "Worse than yours. Keep going anyway."Then she turned around and pressed it into my palm instead of his, laughing, and told me it was the worst bird anyone had ever made and I wasn't allowed to laugh at it.I hadn't laughed.

Dorian’s POV The laborer turned around and walked back to Elle.Just as he got close to her, he pulled her into his arms like he had every right to, and she let him.I clenched my fist, staring hard at them, heat crawling up the back of my neck. She looked at peace in his arms, content like I hadn’t seen since before the trial. She didn’t deserve that. After everything she’d done, she didn’t deserve peace. Someone as evil as she was needed to be miserable for the rest of her life.I kept watching them as he held her face and whispered something to her before walking off.I used to hold her face exactly like that, back when I still believed the version of her worth loving still existed. My brother’s dead because of her, and watching some laborer get looked at the way I used to get looked at made my jaw ache from clenching it so hard. It felt less like grief and more like being robbed twice by the same woman.Three years in a cell hadn’t taught her anything. She’d found someone new foo

It didn't need to be. "I caught her arm and knocked over a bucket of paint doing it. That's the whole incident, and I'll say it as many times as anyone here needs to hear it before they believe it."Nobody laughed at how he looked. Nobody moved either.I stood there with my mouth slightly open, too stunned to close it. I had never once, in three years, watched anyone speak to Colette like that, calm and certain, like her name carried no weight at all.A small, vicious part of me wanted to cheer. Wanted to watch her flounder in fro

Murielle’s POVTwo days passed without Colette saying a single word about whatever she'd seen, or hadn't seen, in that courtyard.I'd thought the scene she'd staged was all she had in store for me. But with each passing day, dread built anyway, quiet and impossible to shake.I kept waiting for the rest of it to land, and it never did.Today was the delegation's farewell gathering. Lanterns went up between the trees on the east lawn that evening, and every hand in the house got pulled into service, whether they'd been cleared for it or not.Colette found me before a steward could. "Just this," she said, holding out a folded stack of table linens no heavier than a blanket. "Nothing your ribs can't manage. The delegation's steward asked for extra settings at the head table."I didn't trust the smile that came with it, but I took the linens anyway. Refusing a direct order from anyone in that family had never once worked out for me.Until I got my papers from Rook, I needed to lay low. Onc

Murielle’s POV Ten days since the beating, and I still wasn’t back to full strength.Alizeh had moved me out of the infirmary and back into my own room three days before, insisting a familiar bed would do more for me than four more walls that smelled like sickness.Alizeh came by early, before the house was fully awake, and unwound the bandages around my ribs with the same care she always used.“Better,” she said, pressing careful fingers along one side. “Not fully healed, but better.”“How much longer?”“As long as it takes. You’re not going anywhere near heavy work until I say so, and I mean that this time.” She caught the look on my face before I could hide it. “I know you. You’ll be back out at that well or doing some hard labor the second nobody’s looking, telling yourself you’re fine because being useless scares you more than pain does.”She wasn’t wrong, which was worse than if she’d been wrong.“I’ll talk to Alpha Callum myself,” she said, packing her things. “Get you somethi

Beta Soren’s POVHerta's handwriting slanted the same way across the whole page, steady, like she'd decided what to say before she ever picked up the pen and hadn't needed to think past that.I'd read enough false statements to know what one looked like on paper. The letters usually shrank toward the end. Or the ink pressed harder in the spots where someone was working to convince themselves along with everyone else.Hers didn't do either.I set it beside the other three, in the order I'd taken them, and read through all four again anyway. Not because I doubted them. A King was about to stake something on this, and I wasn't in the habit of handing him anything I hadn't checked twice myself."My King. It's done.""Good." Cassian's voice came back short, distracted by something else entirely. "Keep it somewhere safe until I say otherwise."I'd known him long enough to hear what wasn't in that sentence."Luna Murielle's healing. Every day this waits is a day closer to someone finding a r
