Rain

Things were slowly getting back to normal.

Well as normal as things could get when you had a war with ancient dragons nipping at your heels as well as Lia trying to struggle with her growing power.

We were doing our best to be there for our mate. I was trying to be more cheerful than normal, knowing it was annoying Matt to no ends. He kept glaring at me during the day. Colby seemed all right with my cheerful attitude while Jesse was indifferent.

Matt was my friend, but I knew my cheerful attitude could be very annoying.

Right now we were sitting in the living room, just hanging out. It was important for us to have some semblance of normal even when nothing was.

If things were normal I would be on the rugby field playing the game I had grown up with and loved more than anything. To step away from the game I loved sucked but there was no choice.

These ancient dragons were going to be something difficult for us to handle. I was afraid, but at least we weren’t facing this alone!

LiaI was pacing. I couldn’t help it. Every few minutes, I’d glance toward the trial zone, hoping to see Matt emerging with that usual smirk of his, like it was all no big deal. I was almost praying to every god I could think of, even though I wasn’t much of a religious woman.Seriously, what was taking so long? I wish I knew. When we were waiting for the others, it didn’t seem to take so long. But he wasn’t back yet. I hadn’t even realized how much I was starting to get anxious until I caught myself checking my watch for the hundredth time. It had been longer than I expected.“Where’s Matt?” Rain muttered, his voice tight with the same unease I was feeling.“Don’t know,” Jesse said, eyes narrowed. “He’s taking longer than he should. Not sure if that’s good or bad.”I glanced around at the others. Colby was standing a little apart from the group, arms folded across his chest. His usual calm was there, but I could see the concern in his eyes, just barely hidden. We were dealing with th

MattWaiting for it to call me was driving me crazy. I groaned, running a hand through my thick curls.“Why is it taking so long? I’m the only one left.”Lia came up beside me, putting a gentle arm around my shoulders. “It’s probably just gathering its power or something. Notice it had to do this one-on-one, allowing itself to almost recharge. This is how it came off to me.”I huffed. “You could be right, but it just makes this entire thing feel like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”My eyes kept drifting back over towards the Spiritborn. It still hadn’t lit up. I sighed, glancing at the twins who kept falling in and out of sleep. They were doing good, keeping calm and being much better at this situation than the adults. How did they do it?I don’t know, but it was something tying them to Ashroot. This was why we were here in the first place, trying to find out what was reaching out to the twins. Had I been in their position, I would’ve been a fucking wreck, and I was saying th

JesseThe creature turned and looked at me. It didn’t say anything, but it was still staring at me.I knew it was going to say my name. This was obvious from the way it was staring at me.My mind was spinning, wondering what I might face when I was in there. Everyone had dealt with their version of hell. I was going to have to do the same. The creature still hadn’t spoken, and somehow, that made it worse. Like it was giving me time to unravel myself before it even opened its mouth. But bravery felt like a joke when your name was about to be carved into the air by a monster that saw straight into your soul. Then its mouth—or whatever passed for one—opened. And it began to speak.“Jesse Morelli. Step forward.”Great, it was me, but I always knew it was going to be me. Why was I even surprised at this point?I exhaled slowly, already halfway to my feet before the Spiritborn even finished saying my name.Matt clapped me on the shoulder as I passed. “Don’t make it look too easy, yeah?”I s

RainTime was passing slowly.I was pacing back and forth. No one was stopping me, probably lost in their thoughts.Who could blame them? The twins did wake up and were a little fussy, but the strange thing about all this was that they were very calm towards the Spiritborn. It was like that creature didn’t bother them at all.Meanwhile all of us were a fucking nervous wreck, afraid it was going to say our name like we were in the Hunger Games or something. In a way, this did feel like the Hunger Games! We were fighting these trials for someone’s enjoyment. Whose enjoyment? I don’t know, but it was probably the one the twins kept talking about. The one behind the veil. The one that watched us like pieces on a board. And worst of all, the one that seemed to know exactly what we feared most.I glanced around the area, catching the others' faces—pale, drawn, eyes darting to the Spiritborn like it might strike at any second.I hated this. The waiting. The not knowing. The feeling that we w

ColbyWhen the Spiritborn came back to life, we all tensed. I looked at it, feeling like it was about to call my name. And you know what? I wasn’t wrong. This was exactly what the damn thing did.The moment the Spiritborn called my name, the air shifted.“Colby McGrath. Step forward.”I blinked, staring up at them like maybe they’d gotten the name wrong.“Shit,” I muttered under my breath.Everyone turned to look at me.“Well,” I said, clapping my hands once, “guess that’s me.”“Try not to trip on your way up,” Rain called out, already grinning.Matt leaned against a post, arms folded. “Don’t cry in front of the ancient spirit. They’ll smell weakness.”Leave it to Matt to tell me this. I snorted, giving him a bit of a look.“Very funny,” I shot back. “You guys better wait for me.”“Obviously,” Rain said, like it wasn’t even a question.I looked at Lia, who stood just off to the side. Her arms were folded across her chest, but her eyes softened the second I looked her way.“You’ll wait

LiaThe ground beneath us pulsed like it had a heartbeat. Everything shimmered—air, light, even the trees, like the entire forest was holding its breath. Then the Spiritborn turned toward me.“Lia Brown. Your trial is first.”My stomach tightened, but I didn’t flinch. I just nodded. “Okay.”The guys all turned toward me at once—four matching looks of worry in very different flavors.Matt stepped forward. “Wait—first? Why her?”“I’m not surprised,” Jesse said quietly. “She’s the reason we’re here.”Rain made a noise like a kicked puppy. “Can we trade? I’d rather go first. Seriously. Please.”“No.” I stepped past all of them, heart pounding but feet steady. “It’s fine. It makes sense.”Colby looked at me, eyes a little too serious for his usual self. “You don’t have to act like you’re not freaked out.”I gave him a tight smile. “I am freaked out. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going.”Rain looked panicked. “What if it’s some creepy memory trial? Or like, you must fight a mirror version o

LiaThe air in Ashroot didn’t feel like air. It felt like breathing in the hum of electricity and ancient whispers at the same time. Not a fan.Everything here felt wrong, like the world had been painted and we just stepped into some kind of strange painting. I wasn’t sure how to wrap my mind around that one but this was how it felt. The guys were walking, following the twins. I had Gemma’s tiny hand clenched in my mind, trying not to act as if my daughter was leading me forward.“Come on, Mama. You need to meet the Spiritborn.”This Spiritborn again, being of balance. I still didn’t know what the fuck that meant. Did the twins even know what it meant? It didn’t feel like they did.Rain kept muttering to himself, and so did Matt. We were all lost in our thoughts, trying to figure this out. Or trying to make sense of what we were seeing with our own two eyes.I kept looking around at everything, afraid something was going to pop up from behind the trees. Or in the distance, attacking u

JesseShe found me in the garage. It was where I ended up going to clear my mind. After everything that happened tonight, I needed to just take a break. Besides, Matt’s car did need to be fixed. It had been making a strange rattling sound. Was it something that needed to be fixed, otherwise the car wouldn’t run at all? No, that was not the case. But it did need to be fixed because it was a very annoying sound. At least it was giving me something to do, something to think about right now.I was halfway under Matt’s car, trying to pretend I liked doing maintenance just to have an excuse to avoid everyone for ten minutes.“You busy?” Lia asked, a voice calm but laced with that edge she got when she was about to ruin my entire afternoon.I slid out from under the car slowly. “I’m always busy when you use that tone.”She crossed her arms. “I’m going to Ashroot.”And there it was, but there was never any doubt that this was going to happen. If Ashroot was where we had to go, this was where

RainWe were back home.I thought it would be nice to be home, but no. Everyone was a nervous fucking wreck, thinking about what we had learned from the Rosewater Coven. To make matters worse, there was a sudden Lunar Eclipse that was coming today. These things were usually discovered ahead of time. They didn’t come unexpected, so the fact that it was coming out of the blue made me nervous. The last time a lunar eclipse happened, I enjoyed watching it. But this time, I wanted to close the windows and hide in a darkened room where it couldn’t find us. It was the only way I would be able to make it out of this feeling safe.Everyone else was pretty on edge, too. We were all doing our best to keep our cool and go about our daily life, until this thing facing the twins showed its ugly head.I wasn’t even supposed to be in that hallway. I was looking for the stupid charging cable Jesse stole from me. Again.“Matt!” I called out, knocking on the bedroom door. “I know you have it!”No answer
