“Mom, please,” I begged, my voice trembling.
“I’m not ready to move in with them. Can’t we at least stay here until the rent expires?”
Mom sighed, running a hand through her hair like she was already exhausted.
“Rosalie, this is a good thing. David is offering us stability. A fresh start. The sooner the better! Don’t ruin this for us.”
““I’m not ruining anything,” I shot back,
“I know all these, but I need time to process it all! You can’t just ghost for three weeks and come back with a wedding ring and tell me to move in with them! This is psycho behavior!”
“Are you calling me a psycho?” My mom shot.
“I’m doing this for us Rosalie.”
“I know but do something for me. Please mom, do this to make up for when you forgot my birthday.”
My mom glared at me. She knew she couldn’t say no now.
“Fine, the rent expires in three weeks. But you have to promise you’ll be coming home for dinner.”
I nodded.
“And also you need to be nice to Noah.”
A lump grew in my throat.
“I am, it’s Noah who’s the asshole, not me.”
Mom’s eyes narrowed, and she pointed a finger at me. “You still will be nice to him, do you hear me? Asshole or not. This is our chance to finally have a better life. Don’t screw it up.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but before I could say anything, there was a sharp knock at the door. My face twisted in confusion.
“Oh Noah’s here.”
My stomach dropped.
Noah.
Mom practically skipped to the door, her mood shifting instantly. “Noah! Right on time. Rosalie’s just about ready.”
I wasn’t ready. Well I thought I was till Noah showed up. Now, I wasn’t even close to ready. But before I could protest, Mom was shoving my bag into my hands and pushing me toward the door.
“Have a great first day at your new school!” she chirped, like this was some kind of normal, happy moment.
I wanted to scream. Instead, I found myself standing in the driveway, clutching my bag like a lifeline, as Noah leaned against his car, his arms crossed and a scowl on his face.
“Get in,” he said, his voice flat.
I hesitated, my feet rooted to the ground.
“I can take the bus.”
Noah’s eyes narrowed, and he pushed off the car, taking a step toward me. “Get. In. The. Car.”
I swallowed hard and slid into the passenger seat. My hands trembled as I buckled my seatbelt. Noah got in beside me. His jaw was clenched so tight I could see the muscle twitching. He started the car, and the engine roared to life, but he didn’t pull out right away. He just sat there, his fingers drumming against the steering wheel. He continued to stare into thin air as his breathing uneven.
I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye. He looked off. Like he was panicking, but trying to hide it. Oh I know what’s eating him up alright. His knuckles were almost turning white where he gripped the wheel, and his leg was bouncing like he was seconds away from exploding.
“What are you staring at?” he snapped suddenly. His voice was sharp enough to make me jump.
“Nothing,” I dropped my gaze to the floor. “You just seem… uneasy.”
Noah’s head whipped toward me, his green eyes blazing. “Mind your da*m business, Rosalie.”
I flinched but didn’t back down. “Stop yelling at me!”
Noah’s hands tightened on the wheel. For a moment, I thought he might say something else. Instead, he slammed his foot on the gas, and the car shot forward so fast my head snapped back against the seat.
We drove in silence for a while. The tension was so thick I could barely breathe. Then, without warning, Noah swerved onto a lonely side road and slammed on the brakes.
My eyes widened as I took in a sharp breath.
Noah got out of the car, and before I could react, he yanked open my door.
“Get out.”
“What? No!” I protested, my voice shaking. “It’s about to rain!”
Noah didn’t care. He grabbed my bag and phone from the seat and threw them at me. “Hope you know how to use G****e Maps, because you’re walking to school.”
“Noah, please—” I started, but he was already getting back into the car.
“You are a psycho!” I yelled as he roared the engine to life.
“You better start walking or you’re gonna be late,” he said, before peeling out and leaving me standing there in the dust.
Tears were building up in my eyes. I blinked them back as I picked up my bag.
“You’re not going to cry for a filthy bastard.” I said to myself.
The rain started just as I pulled up the directions to the school on my phone. By the time I got there, I was soaked to the bone. My clothes were clinging to me like a second skin. I stood outside the building, shivering and unsure where to go. The school was massive, with rows of lockers and hallways that seemed to stretch on forever.
I finally found the office after asking a passing teacher, who gave me a sympathetic look but didn’t offer to help. The secretary handed me a timetable and a map, but the words and lines blurred together as I tried to make sense of them.
My first class was on the second floor, but I had no idea how to get there. I wandered the halls, my wet shoes squeaking against the floor, drawing stares from students who whispered and laughed as I passed.
My eyes finally landed on the classroom. I let out a shaky sigh of relief. I could feel my heart pounding. I took a deep breath and stepped inside. I felt everyone's eyes on me. I dropped my gaze to the floor, only to peel them away as a guy stretched out his foot. I stared at the brown eyed boy as he bit his bottom lip.
“Nice tits.”
“F*ck girl You just got out of a porno?” another added, followed by laughter.
I glanced down at my chest, my black bra was a little bit visible.
It’s not that bad, is it?
My face burned, but I kept my eyes on the ground and hurried to an empty seat. The teacher didn’t even look up from her desk, like this was just another day at this hellhole of a school.
I was just starting to relax when the door opened again, and the room fell silent.
Noah walked in with his head down. His knuckles look scraped and raw. My stomach dropped as his piercing green eyes locked onto mine.
“Babe!” a girl called from the corner. Oh he has a girlfriend? I shouldn’t be surprised. He’s hot after all. But he didn’t acknowledge her. He continued to walk to the back of the room with his gaze never leaving mine. He sat down directly behind me then stretched out his legs to either side of my chair. It’s like he’s trying to let his presence scare me, over power me. I closed my eyes then let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding in. I opened my eyes, then let a small smile plaster on my lips.
Oh he’s not going to intimidate me, I’m the one who knows his dirty secret.
I grabbed his hand, and he pulled me up to my feet. “What’s the time?” He asked as he walked over to the door.I pulled out my cellphone.“Nine thirty?! How did time run so fast? I have homework to do.” I began to walk faster towards the door.“Not so fast.” David said, pulling me back.“You still have lots of time to do your homework… and you might not even be in school tomorrow?”“Not be in school tomorrow? Why wouldn’t I be in school tomorrow?”“Because it’s your birthday.”I let out a sigh. “I told you I have no plans for my birthday. I’ve never celebrated my birthday again since I was seven.”“And why is that?” David asked casually as he continued to lead me to what I think is the other side of the house.“Well it was my dad that threw the parties or bought me cake or made me feel special… when he left, no one did that again.”“Hmm, I understand.” He continued to walk till we crossed over to the familiar other side of the house.“Have you ever been here?”The memories started t
I continued to stare at him as I hoped for him to say something. He should at least say something. He watched me, then his eyes would go back to Noah. I wondered how Noah was doing, because if it’s what I think is happening right here… He should have had a heart attack.David dug his hand into his suit pocket again, then threw his keys on the table. He then turned to face Noah who was incredibly quiet compared to the time my mom had something to say about us.“Go for a drive, son.” Noah did not look up, he just kept walking till he was out of sight. My gaze fell back to David, who still hadn’t removed his eyes from me. “So Rosalie… what was that that I just saw?”I swallowed the hard lump that grew in my throat.“Noah… Noah was being annoying as usual.”David let out a chuckle, and was about to sink on the couch before he got up back.“This seems like a conversation that should happen in my office, don’t you think?”I just looked at him as he glanced at me for a second, then began to
The words hung in the sterile air between us. It’s not for David.I took a sharp step back from the hospital bed, and my shoulder bumped into Noah’s chest. He didn’t move. He was like a solid wall behind me. He let out a small, low chuckle that vibrated through me, a sound that was part shock, part something else entirely.I couldn’t process this here. Not with my mom looking so broken, not with Noah’s knowing presence at my back.“I… I’m going to go,” I stammered, with my eyes still locked on my mother. “I’ll come see you tomorrow.”“No,” she whispered. She still wouldn’t look at me. “Don’t. There would be no need for that. Just… focus on school. I’ll be fine.”“No, I need to–”“I said no Rosalie. You don’t have to. I might even be home before you come home. Just relax and don’t worry about me, okay?”The dismissal stung, but it also gave me an escape route. I turned and practically fled the room, Noah following silently in my wake. We walked through the hospital corridors and out to
The hospital lights shine bright in my eye.The chairs in the waiting room were hard plastic, and I sat there numb. I was staring at a scuff mark on the floor. Noah’s arm was around me, but I couldn’t feel it. I just felt cold.Hours passed, and my head was heavy. My eyes burned and I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I knew, Noah was gently tapping my shoulder. He lifted my head from where it had slumped against his chest, and he turned my gaze to his.“Rosalie,” he said softly. “The doctor’s here.”I jerked upright. My heart was leaping into my throat. A doctor in a white coat stood in front of us with his face kind but tired.“Your mother is stable,” he said, and a wave of relief washed over me so strong it made me dizzy. I let out a deep sigh of relief.“She’s severely malnourished. Dehydrated. She’s pregnant, she needs to be eating for two, not for none.” He gave me a pointed look. “We’re hydrating her and we’ll get some nutrients into her. She needs rest.”“Can I s
The final bell rang, and I practically launched myself out of my seat. My backpack felt like it was filled with bricks. I’d woken up so drained, so tired, I almost didn’t come. I had no energy for anything.I didn’t look back as I shoved my way into the hallway. I didn’t have to. I could feel him. Noah’s presence was a constant, heavy shadow all day. We were almost at the exit when Nikki stepped in front of us, blocking the way.I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my own brain. A loud and frustrated groan tore out of me. This was the last thing I needed. The absolute last thing.“Whatever it is, the answer is no,” I snapped, not even breaking my stride as I tried to walk around her. “And you can forget about trying to talk shit to me because of the laptop. I'm not doing any of your bizarre shit."A smile crept on her lips, and she popped a bubble with the bubble gum she was chewing."I'm not here to negotiate, dork. I'm here to inform you." She leaned closer, and her voice dropped to a w
David stood in my doorway, with his tall frame blocking the light from the hall. My face fell as I let my gaze fall on him.“What are you doing here?” I asked. The anger and humiliation were still a hot coal in my chest.“I’m sorry,” he said, stepping inside and closing the door softly behind him. “I got caught up in something. I shouldn’t have made you wait.”A bitter laugh escaped me. “Yeah. Right. You would have also gotten caught up in something if I had rode with you?”He didn’t argue. Instead, he let out a deep sigh and his eyes drifted to the canvas on my easel. It was a violent storm of red and black. He let out a deep sigh again, then he did something that completely disarmed me. He walked over to me and picked up a clean brush. He dipped it in a smudge of crimson on my palette, and without asking, began to stroke the color onto the corner of my painting.I pulled back, ready to yell at him for touching my work, but the words died in my throat.I just watched him.His stroke
