Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Kitty June
Two hours later, Celeste opened the door and came out of her room. She was holding a teddy bear, and her eyes were all swollen.

The teddy bear was the only gift James had ever given her. Celeste treasured it more than any of her other possessions.

"Mom, I don't want this anymore." Celeste held out the bear, pretending to smile as she pushed it into Naomi's hands. "Mr. James only has two chances left."

"Okay." Naomi didn't know how to comfort her.

"I want to have a birthday party and invite my friends. Can I, Mom?" Celeste asked, looking at Naomi hopefully.

Naturally, Naomi couldn't bring herself to say no. Every year, Celeste celebrated her birthday at home with only her.

James had never shown up, as he had never cared.

Naomi agreed, knowing that Celeste was giving James another chance by doing this.

Celeste kept coughing. Naomi was worried about her health, so she decided to let Celeste take a few days off from kindergarten.

Over the weekend, Naomi brought Celeste to an amusement park. While Celeste played, Naomi sat nearby, looking at potential venues for the party.

Suddenly, she heard Celeste crying.

She looked up and saw Liam trying to snatch something from Celeste. Liam was aggressive and spoiled. He insisted on taking the toy from Celeste's hands. When she wouldn't give it to him, he shoved her hard to the ground.

Naomi rushed over and picked Celeste up. "Apologize!" she demanded, glaring at Liam.

Liam turned his head away and lied, "Why should I apologize? She fell by herself!"

"I saw you push my daughter. You must apologize," Naomi insisted.

Liam looked defiant and ready to argue. But when he saw someone who was approaching from behind them, he suddenly dropped to the floor and burst into loud sobs.

"Liam!" James hurried over to check on him.

He had never before looked at Celeste with such urgency and concern.

Naomi let out a bitter laugh.

Liam clung to James' arm and complained, "Daddy, they bullied me. They stole my toy and hit me."

James' expression darkened in anger. He turned around to confront the party that had offended Liam.

But when he saw that it was Naomi and Celeste, he briefly froze. His gaze instantly shifted from concern to coldness.

"What happened?" he demanded.

"Mr. James, he pushed me," Celeste said earnestly. "Mom and I didn't bully him. Mom just wanted him to say sorry."

She stopped crying when she saw James, hoping to get his attention.

James frowned and said, "I see. Are you hurt?"

"No." Celeste shook her head, smiling slightly, thinking that James was showing some concern. To her disappointment, he merely nodded indifferently and left with Liam.

Celeste's eyes dimmed.

A deep sorrow filled Naomi's heart. James' favoritism toward Liam had gone too far. He didn't have to love them, but Naomi thought that it was unfair of him to keep hurting Celeste.

"Stop right there," Naomi said through gritted teeth, stepping in front of them. "He needs to apologize."

James' expression soured. Her behavior, which he deemed unreasonable, irked him.

He sternly warned, "Don't make a scene. He's just a child."

Naomi's heart sank, but she didn't back down. "Mr. Hudson, a child should still answer for his or her actions. He pushed Celeste, so he should apologize. The store has security cameras. We can take a look at the footage if it's necessary."

It was the first time she had ever gone up against James. He looked at her in disbelief, his irritation deepening.

But Naomi stood firm. Celeste had already endured too much. She had to stand up for her daughter this time.

Even if James didn't care, she did. She wouldn't let him side with someone else's child at Celeste's expense.

"I'll apologize on his behalf," James said coldly when Liam refused to say sorry. "He didn't do it on purpose."

"Why, you…" Naomi felt her blood run cold. Was James seriously protecting another woman's child to such an unreasonable extent?

"It's okay. I forgive you. Let's go, Mom." Celeste tugged at Naomi's hand, forcing a smile. But as she turned around, tears fell silently down her face.

Naomi felt the same piercing pain that Celeste was feeling in her heart. She croaked, "Okay."

Naomi stayed by James' side the entire time, and Celeste also refused to leave. In the blink of an eye, seven days had passed. Yet, James showed no signs of waking up."Mom, why isn't Dad waking up?" Celeste had been crying the past few days. Her voice was hoarse, and her eyes were red and swollen.Naomi's heart ached for her. She placed a cold towel on Celeste's eyes and said, "He will wake up.""Mom, I'm scared. I don't want Dad to die."Naomi grew choked up. "James, if you don't wake up, we'll never forgive you!"As he lay in bed, James' fingers twitched. His eyes began to move, and he finally opened them with difficulty. He croaked, "Naomi, Celeste…""Mom, Dad's awake!" Growing emotional, Celeste ran toward James. With a surprised yet overjoyed expression, she looked at him and called, "Dad!""I'm sorry for making you worry.""No, we should be thanking you instead. Thank you for saving us," Naomi said with tears in her eyes, suppressing her emotions.James smiled but found

Naomi hugged Celeste tightly, panicking. Her heart felt like it was going to leap out of her chest."Let us go, or else we'll kill the mother, then the child," threatened one of the robbers.Naomi felt a chill against her neck as the knife sliced her skin. She winced in pain."Let them go, and take me as the hostage instead!" James roared angrily as he walked over. He stood behind them and said, "I am the CEO of Hudson Group. I can bring you out of here."The robbers weren't fools. It was difficult to subdue an adult man, so they rejected James' offer.James picked up a stone and smashed it against his right hand. There was an audible sound of bone shattering, and his face instantly paled."My right hand is broken, so I won't be able to fight back. If you still feel uneasy, I can break my left arm too. Let them go, and take me as a hostage.""Mr. James…" Celeste muttered quietly, tears spilling from her eyes. "Mr. James is hurt."When Naomi saw James break his hand, her heart a

"What are you thinking about, Naomi?" When James turned around, he found Naomi staring blankly at him. "Did I do something wrong?""No. Thank you for today. Celeste was very happy." Shaking her head, Naomi walked him to the door. "It's getting late. Be careful on your way home."James stopped the door from closing. "Naomi, I am Celeste's father. I should be taking care of her. I know I was an asshole before, but I'm trying very hard to change.""I know," Naomi replied indifferently. She could see that James was really doing his best to treat Celeste well."Naomi, won't you give me one more chance?" James' smoldering gaze was fixed on her. There was a loving look in his teary eyes.Besides the day he became paralyzed after the car accident, she had never seen him cry before. The way he looked right now moved her.Unfortunately, what had happened couldn't be undone."Mr. Hudson, I don't need this chance. I won't stop you from being nice to Celeste, but whatever was between us is a

Holding the doll, Celeste pretended she hadn't heard James' request. She simply said, "Let's go, Mom.""I'll drive you home," James said."No, thanks. We'll call a taxi," Naomi said, refusing his offer.James didn't force the matter. He merely watched as they walked out the door. The next morning, James appeared in the hotel lobby. He was holding a bouquet of flowers and some pastries, waiting for Naomi and Celeste."Good morning. Do you have some time today? Let's go out for a meal.""Sorry, we're busy," Naomi said, turning him down. Taking Celeste's hand, she walked away.Still, James didn't force them into agreeing. He simply stood there, gazing at their retreating backs. He knew very well that Naomi wouldn't forgive him so easily.Yet, he didn't lose hope, nor did he give up.Every day, he would wait for Naomi and Celeste at their hotel. Each day, he brought something different. He firmly believed that there was something that they were bound to like.Naomi would reject

"Naomi, why don't you keep Celeste company? The food will be ready soon," James said giddily. He had dreamed of this moment countless times, and it had finally become reality.Celeste unwrapped the presents happily. There were all kinds of gifts—dolls, books, blocks, and even virtual pets.As Naomi watched Celeste, a wave of bitterness washed over her. Why did he only appreciate them after he lost them?"It's time to eat." After James placed the final plate down, he took off his apron and called Celeste to the table.Celeste was drenched in sweat, and her hands were stained with a variety of colors. He first took her to wash her hands, then helped her to dry them. Afterward, he held her hand and brought her back to the table."I'm such an inadequate husband and father. I don't even know what you two like to eat, so I just made a simple meal." Overcome with regret, James shot Naomi a careful glance. He had grilled some black pepper pork and chicken wings. To complement those dishe

"Sorry, I need to go on stage soon." Without giving an answer, Naomi walked around James and walked onto the stage. As the representative of her company, she introduced their new product. Her movements were graceful and polished, and she spoke professionally and confidently.A wave of regret washed over James as he watched Naomi shine brightly. She had been so brilliant all along. His heart, which had been silent for so long, pounded wildly. His eyes trailed after Naomi, unwilling to look away from her for even a moment. He wasn't going to give up. He was going to get his wife and daughter back."Thank you, everyone. If you have any questions, you can reach out to me in private." With that, Naomi ended her presentation. Then, she left the stage.Celeste ran toward her. Naomi took Celeste's hand as she engaged in small talk with the people who approached her.James stood off to the side quietly, not daring to go up and bother her.
