My heartbeat slowed, then stopped, and my wolf form disappeared in an instant.

My spirit rose into the air, and I looked down at my body below.

My face was deathly pale, my hair was matted with blood, and my mouth was still open in a silent cry for help.

I tried to scream, but even in death, I couldn't make a sound.

Outside the door, Caius couldn't hear anything from the chamber or feel me through the mind-link. He frowned, his eyes filling with worry.

"Are you sure this is safe? I can't sense her at all.

"Elara's episodes are always bad. Could this be making things worse?"

Sage pushed her glasses up, a hint of malice flashing in her eyes.

"She's fine. The silence probably means she's realized that acting out won't get her anywhere.

"Plenty of Gammas exaggerate their conditions to make endless demands of their Alpha.

"I've known her since we were young. I know her better than most people do."

Sage's lips curved into a smile.

"Besides, didn't you follow my advice the other day and pretend the bathroom door was locked by accident? She barely reacted.

"That proves she's been faking some of her symptoms."

The worry in Caius's eyes faded, replaced by an irritation he'd kept buried for years.

"You're right. She could still talk that day. Maybe her condition really isn't that serious."

My spirit drifted toward them, following their voices.

I was dead, yet my nonexistent heart still ached when I heard those words.

Not long after Sage returned to the pack, I'd been mysteriously locked in the bathroom.

But the bathroom was well lit, so I didn't panic right away. I managed to call for Caius. He got me out in time.

Caius had been full of guilt afterward, blaming himself for not noticing the broken lock sooner.

Of course I hadn't doubted my mate.

But their conversation made me realize that Caius had been testing me all along.

I floated after them all the way back to the estate. As soon as we arrived, Sage began giving orders.

"Burn all the paper and pens. Don't give her anything to rely on.

"Make her understand that speaking is the only way anyone will respond to her."

Caius did as she said.

The notepads and pens Caius had so thoughtfully placed throughout the estate were burned to nothing because of a single careless command from Sage.

My heart seemed to turn to ash along with those papers.

When it was done, Sage nodded with satisfaction.

"Set up a guest room for me. That way, I can keep an eye on Elara."

Caius nodded and showed her to one of the rooms.

The mighty Alpha was following a human girl's every order.

Sage stepped into the room, then spoke again.

"Switch the curtains to blackout ones. You'll sleep better that way."

"Yeah. Taking care of Elara has cost me so many sleepless nights."

"Then maybe it's time you admit that Elara is a burden to you."

Caius was quiet for a few seconds, then nodded.

"If only she could be more like you."

Sage turned away without responding.

But I clearly saw the smile tugging at her lips as she turned.

"By the way, Elara's parents invited me over. Come with me."

"Sure. It's been a while since I last visited them anyway."

After I bonded with Caius, my parents had refused to let me come home, claiming that a Luna should remain with the Alpha.

Yet now they had gone out of their way to invite a human girl over.

It was the height of summer, but I felt cold to the bone.

I trailed behind them, watching as they walked away, talking and laughing.

No one remembered that my body was still lying alone in that dark, sweltering stone chamber.

Since I couldn't leave this world, I simply drifted from place to place.I'd visit the infirmary now and then to check on my parents. My father hadn't fully regained consciousness, but his fingers could move. His hand remained clutched tightly around the wolf fang.My mother's hair had gone gray, and from time to time she murmured my name. Most of the time, I followed Caius and watched him go through each day like a shell of his former self. Before long, it was my birthday. If Caius hadn't remembered, I might have forgotten it myself.Caius behaved strangely all day.He cleaned the entire estate from top to bottom, then went to the bedroom and laid all of my clothes beside his on the bed.He pulled our photo album from the nightstand and turned the pages one by one, handling each picture like a precious treasure. As he looked at each photo, he remembered exactly when it had been taken. He remembered what I'd worn that day and everything I'd said to him.Caius cried again. For the past

A little while later, Sage sent Caius a message."I'm sorry. As her friend, I underestimated how fragile she was. I wish I could have done more to help her."Healing from trauma is a difficult process. I hope you understand."Even in her carefully chosen words, Sage was still blaming me for what happened.Caius didn't reply. He hurled his phone at the wall, shattering it to pieces. The regret had come too late. If only he'd gone to check on me himself, even once, none of this would have happened. But he hadn't. He'd chosen to believe Sage.Bang. Bang.A loud pounding shook the front door.It was my parents.Caius knew they'd come, and he was ready.I watched them sob so hard they could barely speak. They shook their heads and beat their chests in grief."How did my daughter die? Alpha, please tell us what happened!""My Elara!""It's all my fault. I was stubborn and blind!"Caius said nothing. He simply helped them stay on their feet and let them vent their grief. The commotion was lou

Meanwhile, word of my death reached my parents."Are you Elara's parents?"At the sound of my name, they frowned, as always."What trouble has that damned girl caused this time!""Even as Luna, she can't stay out of trouble."The Gamma delivering the news ignored their complaints and got straight to the point."The Luna has passed away. We're investigating the cause of death. Please accept our condolences."He left after that brief announcement. My parents stared at each other. Only after going over his words several times did they accept that they had not misheard. That Gamma had indeed said that their daughter, the pack's Luna, was dead."That's impossible. She was perfectly healthy. How could she be dead? I don't believe it. Victor, come on. Let's go see for ourselves!"Mom, Dad. From now on, your ungrateful daughter will never bother you again.I followed them back to the estate. The medical examiner was there to ask them about my medical history."Our records show that Luna Elara

I heard the report and paused, startled. Then, to my own surprise, I felt a grim satisfaction. Was the truth finally coming out?Caius bolted from the hall and shifted into his wolf form, sprinting back toward the estate."What's going on... Did Elara pull some kind of stunt?""Must be. Sage said she was fine last night."I followed behind him with a mocking smile. You believe everything she says, Caius? You're an Alpha, yet you're so easy to fool.Whether you truly trusted Sage that much or simply didn't want to face the truth, only you knew the answer.Caius ran without stopping, cutting a twenty-minute trip down to ten.The moment he reached the estate gates, he found a crowd gathered outside, with the area already sealed off.He shifted back into human form, but his steps slowed as he approached. It was as if he couldn't bring himself to go any farther. Then a Gamma spotted him."Alpha Caius, please come and see for yourself."Before he even got close, the stench hit him.His hands

Caius slept soundly that night and ran into Sage in the bathroom the next morning. She was wearing an oversized shirt that made her look small and delicate.Caius froze for a moment when he saw her.But when he spoke, he only asked about me."How's Elara? Is she doing better?"Sage smiled."I checked on her last night. She seemed fine. She just refused to speak."Liar.You're lying. You never open the door to check on me."Figures. She's waiting for me to go comfort her again. But after so many times, I'm exhausted."Caius finally said what was really on his mind.Hearing Caius finally admit that he was tired of me, Sage could barely hide the delight in her eyes.Still, she put on a concerned mask."That's exactly why she needs to learn her lesson. We're helping her grow."There's a gathering today with some old friends Elara and I both know. Come with me. If you stay here, you'll only keep worrying about her."Caius nodded and went with Sage.I followed them to the banquet hall, where

The drive was short, and Caius and Sage soon arrived at my parents' house. The moment they stepped out of the car, my parents, Nora and Victor Vale, came out to greet them with warm smiles.Anyone would have thought they were one happy family. But every time I came home, all that greeted me was criticism and disapproval.I'd known since I was little that my parents preferred our neighbor's daughter, Sage. So I went out of my way to befriend her.I clumsily imitated everything she did, hoping my parents might like me more.My mother rushed forward."Sweetheart, you're back! Come in, come in. Was it too hot outside?"Sage smiled and linked her arm through my mother's."Not at all. Caius drove me here."My mother beamed at Sage and stroked her hair."It's been so long. You've gotten even prettier."And Caius, you've gotten even more handsome."Sage smiled brightly at my mother, the pack's Beta."Nora, you're the beautiful one. You haven't changed a bit. You're still gorgeous after all the
