80. Endearing Silence

last update Last Updated: 2025-06-12 21:46:37

Cali’s pov.

I wake to warmth.

Not just heat, but pressure. An arm heavy around my waist. A firm chest rising behind my back. My legs tangled with his. The covers tucked in tight around us like we haven’t moved in hours.

I don’t need to turn my head to know who it is.

Hale.

I expected to wake alone. Expected cold sheets. Expected to be locked in a different room with nothing but silence and the taste of my own regret.

Instead, I’m here. With him.

His breathing is deep. Controlled. One hand rests on my stomach, thumb brushing the bare skin just under my navel. He’s not asleep anymore. He’s waiting.

I stay still.

Because I don’t want this to end.

I don’t understand why I’m being allowed to have this moment—why he hasn’t shoved me away yet, forced me to my knees, reminded me of how much I’ve cost him.

But I’m not stupid enough to question it out loud.

He shifts slightly beneath me and pulls his arm back, like he’s preparing to get up.

My hand shoots out and grabs a fistful of his shirt.

Hale’s pov.I’m not even fully awake when the phone starts vibrating.I’m still in bed. Still holding her.Cali’s breathing is steady. Her body pressed into mine like she never intends to leave again. I stare at the crown of her head for a second longer than I should before reaching for the device on the nightstand. The screen flashes a name.Louis.One of mine.Quiet. Efficient. Been with me since Prague. He doesn’t call unless it matters.I slide out of bed carefully. Cali stirs but doesn’t wake. I pull on a shirt and step into the hall, shutting the door behind me.“Talk,” I say as I answer.“Got what you wanted on Killian Vale.”My jaw tightens.“And?”“Worse than we thought.”I walk down the hall toward the office, closing the door behind me once I’m in. “Be specific.”He doesn’t hesitate. “Sex trafficking—confirmed. Mostly Eastern European girls. Underage. Drugged. Kept in rotation across three clubs under different owners. But the network’s clean—shell companies, ghost director

  • Burn For Me : Bound By The Mafia King   79. MINE—Not Yours.

HaleShe’s still curled into me when I wake.Small, quiet, pressed so tightly against my chest it’s like she’s trying to disappear inside me.Not that I’d let her get any farther than that. Her breath is warm against my collarbone. Her fingers are balled into my shirt. My arm is numb beneath the weight of her body, but I don’t move. I stay there and let her have it. Let her have me. Just for this. For now.Sunlight bleeds through the blackout curtains I forgot to close properly last night. The clock on the nightstand blinks red—almost six p.m.We’ve been in this bed nearly a full day.The first full sleep I’ve had in weeks, and it had to come with her in my arms, after I pierced her as punishment and carried her broken body out of that room.I slowly untangle my arm from beneath her. Her brow twitches, but she doesn’t wake. Not fully.I ease back, careful not to jostle her, and try to sit up.Her hand clamps down on my shirt.I look down. She’s awake.Barely.Her eyes are heavy. Lips

Hale’s pov.She stays still. Not a flinch. Not a sob. Not even a breath too loud. She lets me do it.That needle goes through her skin, and she takes it. Every second of it. Because she thinks she deserves it.She’s not wrong. But it doesn’t feel like winning.I tell myself I won’t be fooled again. That I won’t give her an inch more than what the contract allows. That she made her choice the second she tried to run back to Burke, thinking he could somehow protect her.But looking at her now—arms pinned, legs spread, stripped bare and trembling—I don’t feel victorious. I feel something worse.I feel… hollow. And I hate it.She thought I killed her mother. That’s what this was about. That’s what pushed her to make another desperate, reckless grab for freedom. Not because she didn’t believe I’d protect her. But because she thought I was the one who took her mother from her.And still… she let me mark her.Not because she trusted me.Because she didn’t.Because she thought she didn’t have

I collapse to my knees, my palms scraping the floor to break my fall.My heart shatters—torn to bloody pieces.I’ve fucked up. Bad. So badly there’s no undoing it.As my body convulses with harsh sobs, the bitter truth sinks in: I should’ve watched that footage first. Before pulling this reckless stunt.I should’ve.But I was stupid—blinded by a fool’s trust in my father. If even a sliver of common sense had stayed with me, I would’ve seen it all. Felt the pain coming. At least then, I might’ve held on to the last shred of choice—to crawl back into Hale’s arms and pretend nothing had shifted. To drown in the heat of his touch—safety, comfort, a fragile illusion.I fall back with my spine pressing against the wall.My skin’s clammy. My limbs won’t stop shaking. I can’t get warm.I want to be angry—and I want to fight. But I can’t.All I feel is the ache in my chest where something important used to be.The truth swallowed me whole. My father murdered my mother. And I blamed the wrong m

The second the office door slams shut, I know I’m in trouble.Hale’s fury vibrates off the walls like static. He doesn’t speak. Doesn’t yell.Hell—that would’ve been much easier to digest. Instead, he moves with sharp, controlled aggression—grabbing the chair by the desk and dragging it across the floor with enough force to make the legs screech. He points. “Sit.”I hesitate, having no clue what he’s about to do—or why he brought me here. I do know without a doubt, it won’t be anything good.He grabs my arm. Not hard enough to bruise, but hard enough to remind me he could. Then he shoves me down into the chair with a force that makes my ribs jolt.“Hale—”“Shut up.” He’s already moving around the desk, yanking a USB from his pocket and jamming it into his laptop. My stomach drops.No.No, please.I know what this is.My chest tightens, lungs refusing to pull in air. I shoot up from the chair, heart hammering. “Don’t. Please—don’t do this.”He’s faster. He grabs me mid-panic, hands lik
