Stella's POV

At the party to celebrate my first wedding anniversary with Bryan Sable, Roxy Upton ended up spilling red wine all over her dress.

Bryan, who'd been chatting with a few guests, heard the commotion. He immediately set down his wine glass and walked over to Roxy.

"What happened?"

Clutching the hem of her dress, she kept her head low as she said weakly, "I stained my dress…"

Bryan glanced down at it before saying nonchalantly, "Since it's stained now, just change into another one."

He turned to our butler, Edgar Grady, and instructed, "Bring over one of Stella's evening gowns."

Edgar had just acknowledged the order when Roxy tugged on Bryan's sleeve and said even more softly, "But… I don't want to wear a gown that someone else has already worn before."

Bryan paused for a moment before recalling something. He turned to Edgar and said, "Stella prepared a second evening gown to wear for the latter half of the party, right? Bring that one. It hasn't been worn before."

However, Edgar hesitated and instinctively glanced in my direction. "But Mr. Sable, that evening gown was custom-made for Mrs. Sable. Besides, if you give it… to Ms. Upton, what will Mrs. Sable wear later?"

Bryan frowned, and his tone grew impatient. "Just prepare another one for her. She has more gowns than she has space in the closet for. It's not like she'll suffer without this one gown."

The moment he finished speaking, the crowd couldn't help but look at me, as if sympathizing with me for marrying the wrong man.

Some even frowned, knowing full well how improper Bryan's actions were. There were also a few others who were smirking—waiting to see me lose my temper and assert my position as the lady of the house.

I was just about to speak when, through the crowd, Bryan silently mouthed a few words at me.

"I'll use one of the free passes."

Out of nowhere, I let out a chuckle. Turning to Edgar, I said in an even tone, "Go ahead and get it. She can have it."

When Bryan and I first met, he'd only been the owner of a small company. Yet, to pursue me, he'd willingly spend far more than what he earned on me. Even so, I refused to go out with him, thinking he was just playing the long game.

That only changed when I got abducted by a business rival.

Bryan had charged in alone to rescue me, taking the stabs and blows in my place. He'd risked his life to save mine.

Even as he lay in bed at the ICU ward, he gripped my hand tightly and said, "Even if you're not the Ludlow family heiress, Stella, I still won't regret the choice I made."

That truly moved me beyond all else. Ignoring my family's protests, I stubbornly insisted on marrying Bryan.

Given our wildly different social standings, I knew he'd have to endure certain remarks and attitudes from my family. Therefore, the day we got married, I gave him 99 free passes.

"If you ever upset me, you can use one of the free passes to cancel it out. But once you've used up all 99 of them, this marriage ends."

Upon hearing that, Bryan swiftly locked the free passes away in a drawer on the spot, swearing he wouldn't use even one.

But not long after we got married, he unlocked that drawer for the sake of his newly hired secretary, Roxy. And in less than a year, he'd used up 95 of them.

The gown was canceled out with the 96th free pass.

Roxy quickly changed into my evening gown. It was studded with gemstones, making her sparkle brilliantly in the light. With her hanging off his arm, Bryan moved through the crowd, exchanging more pleasantries with the guests.

It was as if Roxy were his wife—that they were the couple celebrating their wedding anniversary.

As I stood nearby, watching this scene, I stayed silent and took a sip of wine.

At that moment, Edgar came up to me and asked tentatively, "Mrs. Sable, shall I contact the brand and have them send over another gown at once? There's still time."

I shook my head. "It's fine. This wedding anniversary no longer means anything to me anyway."

Omniscient POVBefore Bryan even made it home, a new email popped up in his inbox. As soon as he read it, his face darkened. It was a series of legal documents for the divorce petition I'd filed, including the court summons, the agreement for Star Tower, and the evidence that proved his infidelity. That was the moment when he realized why Stella had left the hospital so quickly the other day. She hadn't been acting out of anger. She'd gone off to prepare for the divorce. He stared at the screen for a long time, feeling like his heart was being squeezed. But even so, he didn't want to sign the divorce agreement. He couldn't accept that things were turning out like this. He refused to believe that she would really be this ruthless toward him.Bryan hired a lawyer to apply for mediation, hoping that he could secure another chance to meet Stella in person. However, his lawyer didn't receive any response to that request. Simon also maintained a firm attitude, and the only reply he ga

Stella's POVI was caught off guard by the state Bryan was in. In just one night, he'd grown a messy stubble, his suit was drenched, and his eyes were bloodshot. Honestly, he looked pathetic. He jumped to his feet the moment he saw me, looking like he was about to rush over and hug me. However, I raised my hand before he could reach me and held out a document in front of him."Sign this."Bryan's steps came to an abrupt halt. His face paled when he saw the words "Divorce Agreement" printed in bold on top.He swallowed hard, as if he had a lot of things to say. But in the end, he simply asked me in a hoarse voice, "How are you feeling right now?"I didn't even bother looking him in the eye as I repeated myself. "Sign it.""Stella, let's just talk first, okay?" Bryan's hands were clenched, and his voice was tight. "It's not like we can't resolve this situation. We—""Other than the divorce, there's nothing left for us to talk about," I interrupted. "I gave you 99 chances, Bryan.

Omniscient POVBryan frowned. He didn't think Roxy would have the audacity to spend the night at the villa. She was even brazenly showing up at the front door in a nightgown to greet him, acting like she really was the lady of the house.Seeing his expression, Roxy immediately came closer. "What's wrong, Mr. Sable? Did Mrs. Sable throw another tantrum?"When he didn't respond, she assumed she was right and quickly tried to console him, "Well, pampered heiresses like her are bound to be all delicate and easily upset. Mr. Sable, you—""That's enough." Bryan cut her off. "It's late. You should leave."Roxy froze. She'd never seen Bryan being this cold before. Her eyes immediately welled with tears, but her reaction only irritated him even further.Despite having grown up in the lap of luxury, Stella would never tear up over something as insignificant as this. She would never use her tears to force others into letting her have her way. Instead, she'd try to find a way to resolve wh

  • Burning Through 99 Chances in a Year   Chapter 5

Omniscient POVAfter Stella ended the call, Bryan tried calling her again. But this time, he heard a robotic voice saying, "Sorry, the number you have dialed is unavailable…"He stared at his phone screen, his heart clenching tightly. He immediately sent Stella a message."How could I have used up all of the free passes already? You gave me so many, and it hasn't been long since we got married!"Then he sent another one."Where are you? Send me your location. I'll come over and talk to you right away."And when no reply came, he sent yet another. "Don't be so impulsive, Stella. Answer me."Alas, all of his messages went unanswered. At last, Bryan was well and truly panicked. He swiftly called up his assistant and said in a tight voice, "Find out which hospital Stella is at. Do it now."After ending the call, he sat in Stella's office, letting the darkness surround him. The gloominess of the night sky matched the heavy feeling in his heart.Only then did he notice the state of

Stella's POVEarly the next morning, I was woken up by Roxy's arrival. She stood on the doorstep, having brought with her the evening gown she wore yesterday. In a timid voice, she said, "I had the gown dry-cleaned, Mrs. Sable. I'm returning it to you now."Before I could respond, Bryan took the gown and tossed it over to Edgar. "It's just a gown. You didn't need to come by just for that. But since you're already here, join us for lunch."He draped his arm across Roxy's shoulders and escorted her in without a pause, as if I weren't standing right there—as if I didn't exist at all.My hand tightened around the doorknob, and my gaze turned icy.At the dining table, Bryan and Roxy kept talking about work, seemingly behaving perfectly appropriately.I didn't know if Roxy did it on purpose, but under the table, her heel kept brushing against my calf. All of a sudden, she raised her wine glass in my direction, but Bryan quickly pressed her hand down."You had more than enough to drink

  • Burning Through 99 Chances in a Year   Chapter 3

Stella's POVI ended my call with Simon, then turned to Bryan with an impassive expression. "It's nothing. Someone has been causing trouble for me. If he crosses me three more times, I'll bankrupt him for good."Bryan came over. He couldn't resist pinching my cheek as he remarked, "As expected of you, the Ludlow family heiress. You always speak with such imposing authority. If I were in his shoes, I'd be begging for mercy right about now." Startled, I looked at him. "Is that so? But he doesn't seem the least bit inclined to beg for mercy.""Then you should let him suffer for a bit. He'll fall in line then."Bryan was right about that. People only behaved themselves after they were made to suffer.Meanwhile, Bryan changed the subject by bringing out a gift box. Before even opening it, I already knew what was inside. Back when he was pursuing me, he loved giving me jewelry. Since I was in the habit of collecting jewelry, even when he had no money, he would still do everything he
