Chapter 2

Author: Cutie Kitty
"I have to commit to the act, don’t I? I forgot to take it off. Rose, don't tell me my jealous girl is upset again?"

The truth was, I was not angry at all.

I had simply remembered the day he proposed to me at the dinner table. He had reached across the table and asked if I would marry him, yet he had not even brought an engagement ring.

He told me he had forgotten and that he did not like the feeling of being tied down by a ring. He promised he would make it up to me on our wedding day by buying me a custom ring from De Beers.

In the end, he slipped a custom ring perfectly onto Lucia Newton's finger.

The man who supposedly hated feeling tied down had happily worn his ‘fake’ wedding band ever since, as if he could not bear to take it off.

Was I angry?

I was not capable of being angry anymore.

For the past month, I had watched the news reports about Jim and Lucia honeymooning around the world. After seeing enough of them, I felt absolutely nothing.

I looked away without answering. I simply took the sweater back from him and said quietly, "My mom knitted that for me herself."

Jim's hands suddenly hung empty.

He was getting annoyed. His lips pressed together, but he still forced himself to keep his voice gentle.

"Right. How's your mom doing? After a month of rest, she should be feeling better by now, right?"

His eyes curved into a smile.

"I always thought our wedding venue was too small and that you deserved better. Why don't we pick a new date and have a big, beautiful wedding this time? Your mom would be happy, too."

I knew Jim was in a good mood. He thought he had given me more than enough chances to let this go. If I refused to play along, he would only lose his temper again.

What he had forgotten was that on the day we were supposed to register our marriage, he had shown up at the County Clerk's Office and claimed that bringing his identification had slipped his mind.

Then, he had turned around and gone with Lucia, whose fiancé had abandoned her, to try on wedding dresses.

We had never even gotten married. We did not need another wedding.

I came back to myself and gave him a faint, bitter smile.

"There's no need."

After being brushed off by me again and again, Jim's expression darkened. He was about to say something when his phone rang.

The moment he saw Lucia's name on the screen, his expression softened. His voice became unbelievably gentle.

"I just got home. Why are you calling?"

I had no idea what Lucia said on the other end.

Jim tucked the phone into the crook of his neck, picked up the black coat hanging by the door, and laughed.

"Lucia, you're getting greedy. I'm still trying to make it up to my girlfriend! This is the last time, okay?"

I watched as he casually slipped the ring back onto his finger.

He stood in front of the full-length mirror, straightened his collar, fixed his hair, grabbed his car keys, and headed for the door.

His hand was already on the doorknob when he finally seemed to remember that I was still standing there.

He hurried back, ruffled my hair with his big hand, and said indulgently, "Okay, Rose. Stop being difficult. I bought you a little gift. I'll give it to you tonight."

I watched him leave. Then I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window.

Down below, a bright pink sports car was parked by the curb, its low chassis almost scraping the ground. Lucia was leaning against the door, happily sipping a milk tea.

Jim had always been a germophobe, but he casually bent his head and took a sip through the same straw Lucia had just used. Then, he got into the driver's seat.

I looked away and pulled the curtains shut.

Turning around, I picked up the overseas assignment application from my desk. I had already filled out every detail.

...

I ran my fingers along the sharp edge of the application.

Then, without a moment's hesitation, I left the apartment and took a cab to the office.

By the time I finished packing up everything, it was already evening.

Two days earlier, I had submitted my application for an overseas assignment through the company system. It had already been approved. All I needed to do now was submit the paperwork for the company's records.

As I walked through the office, people kept glancing at me and whispering among themselves.

Lucia, who currently held the vice president position, twitched at the corner of her mouth. She was clearly unhappy. Before the standoff could go any further, a warm, gentle male voice came from behind us."Is this where Rose Smith works?"The moment I heard that voice, I rushed toward the entrance. It was my husband's voice.I hurried over, my face lighting up."Shane! What are you doing here so soon?"The moment Shane saw me rushing toward him, his heart seemed to jump into his throat. He quickly steadied me."Rose, slow down. Be careful with the baby!"The entire company fell silent, stunned by what they had just heard. Jim was no exception. He stood there in shock, while everyone around him struggled to process what had just happened. Some people recovered quickly and immediately started complimenting me."Ms. Smith, I had no idea you were already married and pregnant! You really have it all. I'm so jealous!""Seriously! And your husband is gorgeous. Ms. Smith, you real

It felt just like my mother's gentle touch. Then I heard footsteps approaching from behind. Jim came hurrying toward me, breathing hard. The moment he saw me, he slowed down. A proud smile tugged at his lips as he looked at me."I knew I'd find you here, Rose."He pulled out a handkerchief and carefully wiped the dust from my mother's headstone, as if he had done it countless times before.I stared at him."You've been taking care of my mom's grave all these years?"Jim lowered his eyes. His long, thick lashes hid his expression from me.He said quietly, "I heard what happened to your mom from people around town. I'm sorry. I know you went through a lot. I understand why you were so hurt that you wanted to get away from me."I answered calmly, "Thank you. But I didn't take the overseas assignment because of you. I did it for myself, for the sake of my rough childhood and for all those years I spent working hard."Jim suddenly pulled me into his arms. His hands tightened aroun

Shane sent a sticker of a little teddy bear making a heart with its paws, and I smiled as I sent him a heart in return. My mood instantly lifted, and I casually turned to Jim with a smile."Congratulations, Mr. Carter."The next second, Jim slammed on the brakes. I lurched forward, barely catching myself with my hands. Instinctively, I placed a hand over my stomach, gently soothing the baby. Before I could say anything, Jim stared at me, clearly furious.Lucia's eyes moved between the two of us before she spoke."Rose, why are you being so formal? Don't tell me you're still upset because Jim and I are close. Jim has missed you all these years. He even scheduled extra business trips overseas on purpose because he wanted to see you—""Lucia!"Jim cut her off. Then, he turned to me with an aggrieved expression."Why are you explaining all that to her? Some people are just too petty. It's been three years, and she is still hung up on that little incident. She's still jealous. It's

I could not help laughing and shaking my head. Once I officially started working overseas, I felt lighter than I had in years. No one was secretly working against me, and no one went out of their way to make things difficult for me. It felt amazing. Here, if I worked hard, I was rewarded for it.Just one month in, I was promoted into management. It was a position I had never been able to reach back home, even after ten years of working and submitting five separate promotion requests.Meanwhile, Jim kept appearing on the front pages of the news.Of course, he was always pictured with Lucia. The two of them attended parties and high-profile events as a married couple, showing off their affection everywhere they went. Everyone praised them as a perfect match, saying they came from equally powerful families and were meant to be together.I supposed Jim had finally figured things out, too. Maybe he had realized that Lucia was the person he had truly loved all along. If so, that wa

We were still standing there, locked in an impasse, when dozens of men in black suits suddenly stormed into the airport.Tate had brought Lucia with him to drag Jim back. The moment Jim saw his father standing there with a stern expression, fear flashed across his face. He instinctively released the handle of my suitcase.I almost laughed bitterly. That was the Jim I know. Forever a child who never learned how to grow up.Before Tate could say a word, Jim swallowed hard and automatically took several steps away from me.He looked back at me three times before suddenly calling out, "Rose, I'll wait for you! It's only three years. I'll be here, waiting for you!"...I found it almost laughable. I did not even bother looking back.Who needed him to wait?He had not even noticed that I had already removed everything that belonged to me from our home. There was no trace left of the life I had once lived there. My home had disappeared the day my mother passed away.I turned aroun

"Rose, don't leave. I’ll forget about becoming president. I don't want the position anymore. All I want is to marry you. I'll get my identification documents back from Dad right now, then we'll go register our marriage. Please?"...Jim was thirty, but because his family had protected him so well, he was still like a child. He seemed to believe that if he put on a wounded expression and apologized, the whole world would have to forgive him.Once, I had found that childish side of him endearing. I had wanted him to stay carefree forever. Now, I was completely disappointed. He had chased after me with that pleading look on his face, not because he loved me, but because he was afraid of losing the obedient, easygoing toy he had always been able to keep by his side. However, the world had never been built to give him everything he wanted. It was time for him to grow up.I looked at Jim, my expression completely calm."Go home. Stop joking around. You spent ten years working for tha
