Chapter 3

Author: Cutie Kitty
"Is that the woman from the video who caused a scene at Mr. Carter's wedding at headquarters? Seriously? She took bereavement leave and disappeared for a while. How does she even have the nerve to come back?"

"I bet she's here to resign. She's been with the company for ten years, yet she's still only a minor team leader. I heard she applied for a promotion five times and got rejected every time. Some people really are hopeless."

Those cutting remarks used to leave me miserable. Now, they barely registered. After all, I had heard plenty of comments like that while arranging my mother's funeral.

I kept my eyes straight ahead and knocked on the door of my supervisor's office.

"Come in."

Tessa Wallace glanced at the forms in my hands and nodded with approval.

"Rose, I couldn't believe you when you told me a couple of days ago that you wanted an overseas assignment. Every time I asked you to take one before, you said you wanted to stay close to your boyfriend and couldn't handle a long-distance relationship.

“This time, you made the decision pretty quickly.

"Someone from headquarters is coming tomorrow to inspect the overseas assignments. Come in one more time tomorrow so they can see you, then you're free to go."

She paused, then smiled.

"Come to think of it, we started as interns at the same time. You were always better than me, and you helped me more times than I can count. I'm glad you've finally figured out what you want."

I lowered my eyes.

She was right.

Maybe I had just been unlucky. Every other intern who started with me had climbed into management. I was the only one who had stayed in the same place all those years.

When I walked out of the building, I turned around and looked up at the skyscraper where I had spent ten years of my life.

Over those ten years, Jim's family's company had grown stronger and stronger. Even the branch office now occupied a towering skyscraper.

Why had my relationship with Jim come crashing down?

Jim and I were the classic rich-boy-meets-Cinderella story.

My father died when I was young, and my mother raised me on her own.

Back then, I squeezed work into every spare minute I had outside of class. I took tutoring jobs and filled in for other teachers whenever I could.

One day, one girl not only refused to pay me for tutoring her, but also brought her roommates to corner me and demanded that I hand over all the money I had.

I was terrified and completely helpless. That was when Jim showed up with his bodyguards. He pulled me up from the ground and offered to buy me dinner.

With a red face, he told me his grades were terrible and he was afraid he was going to fail his finals. He asked me to help him cram.

I knew perfectly well that his grades were actually excellent. He was only using that as an excuse to help me.

I was drawn to the bright, carefree warmth he carried with him, as if life had never given him a reason to be afraid of anything.

The day I accepted his confession, he took my hand and announced to everyone on campus, "This is my genius, beautiful girlfriend!"

When we graduated, I gave up a government-sponsored opportunity to study abroad.

When I started working, I turned down a management position at a major overseas company that would have paid me an enormous salary.

All I wanted was to stay by Jim's side.

I had simple dreams: I wanted to marry him, have children, and grow old together.

Everything changed the day Lucia, Jim's childhood sweetheart, came home after studying abroad a year ago.

That day, Jim left me alone for the first time while I was sick because he wanted to pick Lucia up at the airport.

That night, he got completely drunk at her return party. He grabbed Lucia's hand and refused to leave with me. His eyes were red as he looked at her and asked, "Lucia, promise me you won't leave me again, okay?"

After that, Lucia became the reason Jim and I fought constantly.

I wanted him to understand boundaries. He accused me of being controlling and said I was trying to stop him from having friends.

Once, he even looked at me sarcastically and pointed out that he and Lucia had known each other since childhood.

I was the one who came later.

Then, two months ago, Lucia sent him a wedding invitation.

The same man who had rejected my hints about marriage ninety-nine times suddenly placed a piece of meatloaf on my plate.

He stared down at his food and asked quietly, "Rose, how about we get married too?"

Lucia, who currently held the vice president position, twitched at the corner of her mouth. She was clearly unhappy. Before the standoff could go any further, a warm, gentle male voice came from behind us."Is this where Rose Smith works?"The moment I heard that voice, I rushed toward the entrance. It was my husband's voice.I hurried over, my face lighting up."Shane! What are you doing here so soon?"The moment Shane saw me rushing toward him, his heart seemed to jump into his throat. He quickly steadied me."Rose, slow down. Be careful with the baby!"The entire company fell silent, stunned by what they had just heard. Jim was no exception. He stood there in shock, while everyone around him struggled to process what had just happened. Some people recovered quickly and immediately started complimenting me."Ms. Smith, I had no idea you were already married and pregnant! You really have it all. I'm so jealous!""Seriously! And your husband is gorgeous. Ms. Smith, you real

It felt just like my mother's gentle touch. Then I heard footsteps approaching from behind. Jim came hurrying toward me, breathing hard. The moment he saw me, he slowed down. A proud smile tugged at his lips as he looked at me."I knew I'd find you here, Rose."He pulled out a handkerchief and carefully wiped the dust from my mother's headstone, as if he had done it countless times before.I stared at him."You've been taking care of my mom's grave all these years?"Jim lowered his eyes. His long, thick lashes hid his expression from me.He said quietly, "I heard what happened to your mom from people around town. I'm sorry. I know you went through a lot. I understand why you were so hurt that you wanted to get away from me."I answered calmly, "Thank you. But I didn't take the overseas assignment because of you. I did it for myself, for the sake of my rough childhood and for all those years I spent working hard."Jim suddenly pulled me into his arms. His hands tightened aroun

Shane sent a sticker of a little teddy bear making a heart with its paws, and I smiled as I sent him a heart in return. My mood instantly lifted, and I casually turned to Jim with a smile."Congratulations, Mr. Carter."The next second, Jim slammed on the brakes. I lurched forward, barely catching myself with my hands. Instinctively, I placed a hand over my stomach, gently soothing the baby. Before I could say anything, Jim stared at me, clearly furious.Lucia's eyes moved between the two of us before she spoke."Rose, why are you being so formal? Don't tell me you're still upset because Jim and I are close. Jim has missed you all these years. He even scheduled extra business trips overseas on purpose because he wanted to see you—""Lucia!"Jim cut her off. Then, he turned to me with an aggrieved expression."Why are you explaining all that to her? Some people are just too petty. It's been three years, and she is still hung up on that little incident. She's still jealous. It's

I could not help laughing and shaking my head. Once I officially started working overseas, I felt lighter than I had in years. No one was secretly working against me, and no one went out of their way to make things difficult for me. It felt amazing. Here, if I worked hard, I was rewarded for it.Just one month in, I was promoted into management. It was a position I had never been able to reach back home, even after ten years of working and submitting five separate promotion requests.Meanwhile, Jim kept appearing on the front pages of the news.Of course, he was always pictured with Lucia. The two of them attended parties and high-profile events as a married couple, showing off their affection everywhere they went. Everyone praised them as a perfect match, saying they came from equally powerful families and were meant to be together.I supposed Jim had finally figured things out, too. Maybe he had realized that Lucia was the person he had truly loved all along. If so, that wa

We were still standing there, locked in an impasse, when dozens of men in black suits suddenly stormed into the airport.Tate had brought Lucia with him to drag Jim back. The moment Jim saw his father standing there with a stern expression, fear flashed across his face. He instinctively released the handle of my suitcase.I almost laughed bitterly. That was the Jim I know. Forever a child who never learned how to grow up.Before Tate could say a word, Jim swallowed hard and automatically took several steps away from me.He looked back at me three times before suddenly calling out, "Rose, I'll wait for you! It's only three years. I'll be here, waiting for you!"...I found it almost laughable. I did not even bother looking back.Who needed him to wait?He had not even noticed that I had already removed everything that belonged to me from our home. There was no trace left of the life I had once lived there. My home had disappeared the day my mother passed away.I turned aroun

"Rose, don't leave. I’ll forget about becoming president. I don't want the position anymore. All I want is to marry you. I'll get my identification documents back from Dad right now, then we'll go register our marriage. Please?"...Jim was thirty, but because his family had protected him so well, he was still like a child. He seemed to believe that if he put on a wounded expression and apologized, the whole world would have to forgive him.Once, I had found that childish side of him endearing. I had wanted him to stay carefree forever. Now, I was completely disappointed. He had chased after me with that pleading look on his face, not because he loved me, but because he was afraid of losing the obedient, easygoing toy he had always been able to keep by his side. However, the world had never been built to give him everything he wanted. It was time for him to grow up.I looked at Jim, my expression completely calm."Go home. Stop joking around. You spent ten years working for tha
