Chapter 4

Author: Cutie Kitty
I shook my head, trying to push the memories away.

In the fading sunlight, my shadow stretched long across the pavement, leaving me looking smaller and more alone than ever.

I had no family left in this world.

After walking a few more blocks, darkness had completely settled in.

I was just reaching for my phone to call a ride home when I heard a familiar voice nearby, full of laughter and affection.

"Lucia, hold on tight. If you fall, don't blame me!"

I turned around.

Outside a brightly lit bar, I saw Jim carrying Lucia in his arms like a princess, spinning her around like something straight out of a romantic movie.

Lucia had both arms wrapped tightly around his neck. Her dress fluttered around her legs as she laughed happily, looking every bit like a princess.

A crowd had gathered around them, cheering.

"Come on! Three more rounds! Keep going, Jim! And don't forget to come back and raise a glass with your wife afterward!"

"Lucia looks gorgeous! Remember when we used to play house as kids? Jim beat all of us up because he wanted to be the prince. Who would've thought the prince and princess from back then would actually end up together?"

Jim looked completely pleased with himself.

He gently set Lucia down when she started getting dizzy, handling her as carefully as if she were made of glass.

Then someone handed them two glasses.

Jim and Lucia crossed their arms and took a drink together with practiced ease.

The crowd immediately erupted into louder cheers.

"Kiss! Kiss!"

Jim froze.

He did not move.

Lucia smiled and came to his defense.

"Weren't we just told that was the last game? We've been at this wedding celebration for ages. Everyone should probably head home..."

However, in the next second, Jim wrapped an arm around Lucia's waist and lowered his head to kiss her.

His eyes remained open. There was nothing drunken or confused in them. They were clear, gentle, and filled with a deep possessiveness.

Then, just as quickly, he looked away. He slowly released Lucia and covered his head with one hand, pretending to be drunk.

"I want to go home... My head hurts..."

I saw everything: the way Jim cared about Lucia, the careful tenderness he showed her, and the way his expression softened whenever he looked at her. Then I watched as he swayed unsteadily, pulled out his phone, and made a call.

Then my own phone rang.

Several yards away, Jim heard the ringtone.

The moment our eyes met, he straightened up.

...

Everyone looked back and forth between us, clearly confused. One of them asked Jim, "Jim, who's the pretty girl?"

Jim's eyes flickered. He answered vaguely, "She's my housekeeper's daughter. My mom probably sent her to tell me to come home for dinner."

Lucia looked unbearably pleased. Putting on the sweet, dutiful manner of a wife, she deliberately emphasized every word.

"Oh, the housekeeper's daughter. Well, you'd better take good care of the heir."

If this had happened before, I would have cried and demanded to know who Jim really loved.

Now, I just found the whole thing boring.

I did not even bother giving them another glance. I turned around and got into the rideshare I had already called.

When I got home, I realized I had not eaten anything all afternoon. A sharp pain twisted through my stomach, so I made myself a simple bowl of noodles in clear broth.

I had barely taken two bites when I heard the sharp clicking of high heels outside.

The next second, Jim kicked the door open.

When he saw me eating, his brows furrowed. He reached over and yanked the utensils from my hands.

"Rose! Why did you walk away just now? Do you have any idea how embarrassed you made me?"

What surprised me even more was that Lucia had followed him home. She slipped her arm around Jim's and looked genuinely concerned as she spoke softly.

"Jim, Rose is just a girl. Didn't you say you were going to talk to her nicely?"

Then, she turned to me with a smile that barely concealed the satisfaction in her eyes.

"Rose, please don't be angry. Jim has always had a terrible temper. Ever since we were kids, he's only ever been patient with me. Still, you weren't completely right either. Jim was drunk. How could you just leave him there all by himself?"

Lucia, who currently held the vice president position, twitched at the corner of her mouth. She was clearly unhappy. Before the standoff could go any further, a warm, gentle male voice came from behind us."Is this where Rose Smith works?"The moment I heard that voice, I rushed toward the entrance. It was my husband's voice.I hurried over, my face lighting up."Shane! What are you doing here so soon?"The moment Shane saw me rushing toward him, his heart seemed to jump into his throat. He quickly steadied me."Rose, slow down. Be careful with the baby!"The entire company fell silent, stunned by what they had just heard. Jim was no exception. He stood there in shock, while everyone around him struggled to process what had just happened. Some people recovered quickly and immediately started complimenting me."Ms. Smith, I had no idea you were already married and pregnant! You really have it all. I'm so jealous!""Seriously! And your husband is gorgeous. Ms. Smith, you real

It felt just like my mother's gentle touch. Then I heard footsteps approaching from behind. Jim came hurrying toward me, breathing hard. The moment he saw me, he slowed down. A proud smile tugged at his lips as he looked at me."I knew I'd find you here, Rose."He pulled out a handkerchief and carefully wiped the dust from my mother's headstone, as if he had done it countless times before.I stared at him."You've been taking care of my mom's grave all these years?"Jim lowered his eyes. His long, thick lashes hid his expression from me.He said quietly, "I heard what happened to your mom from people around town. I'm sorry. I know you went through a lot. I understand why you were so hurt that you wanted to get away from me."I answered calmly, "Thank you. But I didn't take the overseas assignment because of you. I did it for myself, for the sake of my rough childhood and for all those years I spent working hard."Jim suddenly pulled me into his arms. His hands tightened aroun

Shane sent a sticker of a little teddy bear making a heart with its paws, and I smiled as I sent him a heart in return. My mood instantly lifted, and I casually turned to Jim with a smile."Congratulations, Mr. Carter."The next second, Jim slammed on the brakes. I lurched forward, barely catching myself with my hands. Instinctively, I placed a hand over my stomach, gently soothing the baby. Before I could say anything, Jim stared at me, clearly furious.Lucia's eyes moved between the two of us before she spoke."Rose, why are you being so formal? Don't tell me you're still upset because Jim and I are close. Jim has missed you all these years. He even scheduled extra business trips overseas on purpose because he wanted to see you—""Lucia!"Jim cut her off. Then, he turned to me with an aggrieved expression."Why are you explaining all that to her? Some people are just too petty. It's been three years, and she is still hung up on that little incident. She's still jealous. It's

I could not help laughing and shaking my head. Once I officially started working overseas, I felt lighter than I had in years. No one was secretly working against me, and no one went out of their way to make things difficult for me. It felt amazing. Here, if I worked hard, I was rewarded for it.Just one month in, I was promoted into management. It was a position I had never been able to reach back home, even after ten years of working and submitting five separate promotion requests.Meanwhile, Jim kept appearing on the front pages of the news.Of course, he was always pictured with Lucia. The two of them attended parties and high-profile events as a married couple, showing off their affection everywhere they went. Everyone praised them as a perfect match, saying they came from equally powerful families and were meant to be together.I supposed Jim had finally figured things out, too. Maybe he had realized that Lucia was the person he had truly loved all along. If so, that wa

We were still standing there, locked in an impasse, when dozens of men in black suits suddenly stormed into the airport.Tate had brought Lucia with him to drag Jim back. The moment Jim saw his father standing there with a stern expression, fear flashed across his face. He instinctively released the handle of my suitcase.I almost laughed bitterly. That was the Jim I know. Forever a child who never learned how to grow up.Before Tate could say a word, Jim swallowed hard and automatically took several steps away from me.He looked back at me three times before suddenly calling out, "Rose, I'll wait for you! It's only three years. I'll be here, waiting for you!"...I found it almost laughable. I did not even bother looking back.Who needed him to wait?He had not even noticed that I had already removed everything that belonged to me from our home. There was no trace left of the life I had once lived there. My home had disappeared the day my mother passed away.I turned aroun

"Rose, don't leave. I’ll forget about becoming president. I don't want the position anymore. All I want is to marry you. I'll get my identification documents back from Dad right now, then we'll go register our marriage. Please?"...Jim was thirty, but because his family had protected him so well, he was still like a child. He seemed to believe that if he put on a wounded expression and apologized, the whole world would have to forgive him.Once, I had found that childish side of him endearing. I had wanted him to stay carefree forever. Now, I was completely disappointed. He had chased after me with that pleading look on his face, not because he loved me, but because he was afraid of losing the obedient, easygoing toy he had always been able to keep by his side. However, the world had never been built to give him everything he wanted. It was time for him to grow up.I looked at Jim, my expression completely calm."Go home. Stop joking around. You spent ten years working for tha
