Chapter 4

Autor: Mimi Winterrest
I thought Dad was finally going to grieve for me. I thought he would rush over and hold me tight.

Excited, I drifted to his side, wanting to nuzzle his arm like a kitten.

But what happened next plunged me right back into an icy abyss.

After taking a deep breath, Dad screamed at my corpse with all his might, "You little brat! What kind of sick game are you playing up there? Get down here right now!"

My body just swayed gently in the freezing wind, unable to respond.

His chest heaved violentl

  • But Dad, I'm Already Dead   Chapter 8

Grandpa handled my funeral all by himself. In just a few short days, his hair turned entirely white and his back slouched, as if he had aged 20 years in an instant.I watched his trembling hands select a photo of me flashing my brightest smile and placing it onto the small, cold tombstone. In the picture, I was wearing a sweater Grandpa had knitted for me by hand. My hair was neatly trimmed, and my eyes were bright and sparkling. As Grandpa stroked my face in the photograph, his tears splashed down drop by drop onto the freezing stone."My sweet Ewan… I failed you… I never should have let you stay with him…"My heart ached terribly for him, and I told him over and over, "Grandpa, it's not your fault. I don't blame you…"…On a beautiful afternoon, Grandpa came to my grave carrying a large bag. He took the items out one by one and arranged them neatly before me.There was my favorite action figure, the toy race car I had saved up my allowance for a long time to buy, and the cro

Grandpa's slap was hard and heavy, snapping Dad's head to the side and drawing a thin line of blood from the corner of his mouth.Dad froze, utterly stunned that this usually gentle old man could unleash such raw power.Mom rushed forward to pull Grandpa back, pleading, "Sir, please don't do this. Theo didn't mean to do it. It really was just an accident—""An accident?" Grandpa flung her hand away, his bloodshot eyes glaring daggers at her."My grandson hung outside for three days while you two were inside laughing and talking, and you call that an accident? You heartless woman! If my daughter were still alive and saw how you treated her son, she would crawl out of her grave to settle the score with you!"Every word Grandpa spoke felt like a spike, driving deep into my heart and into theirs.I drifted to Grandpa's side and tried to wipe away the tears on his face with my ghostly hands."Grandpa, don't cry. I'm not in pain anymore…"My voice melted into the air, but Grandpa see

Just then, Mom ran downstairs after hearing the commotion. The moment she saw my corpse and Dad surrounded by police, she froze in her tracks, completely blindsided. She rushed forward, frantically explaining to the officers that they truly didn't know and that they honestly thought I had just run off in a huff. But it was far too late.Another team of officers had already retrieved the surveillance footage from the nearby street. Soon, a copy of the file was brought out in front of everyone. The police played the video right there in the living room. The footage was heartbreakingly clear, capturing that snowy afternoon three days ago.Everyone could see how Dad had furiously shoved me toward the balcony in a fit of rage and how I had slipped on the icy floor and plunged through the gaps in the railing. In the video, my brief, desperate cry could be heard. The moment that footage played, Dad shattered inside. He collapsed onto the floor, screaming like a lunatic, "I didn't mea

Early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking, the piercing blare of a siren shattered the morning quiet. Several police cars with flashing red and blue lights pulled up in front of our house.I drifted over and saw Mr. Gardner talking to an officer in the distance. His face was tight with worry.A wave of warmth rushed through me.Thank goodness Mr. Gardner hadn't believed Dad's words. Thank goodness he actually cared about me and was worried.Several officers walked briskly up to our front door and knocked loudly.Dad answered the door half-asleep, only to find the police standing outside, leaving him completely bewildered. An officer spoke with a grim expression. "We received a report of a possible fatality at this location."Dad immediately shook his head in denial. "No way, officers. There must be some mistake. Everything is fine here."With that, he repeated the same explanation he had given yesterday with a hint of nonchalance in his tone. "Oh, I get it. It must be m

When he turned back to Mr. Gardner, he forced an ugly smile and began to explain, "Oh, I'm so sorry about this. He's just throwing a tantrum because we didn't take him out for Halloween a couple of days ago. He's just pulling a prank to get back at us."I don't even know where he got that paint. Look at his face, all painted blue and purple. He's driving me insane!"Mr. Gardner remained skeptical. His gaze was full of confusion. "B-But his face is completely purple… It doesn't really look l

"What's wrong, sweetie? Shh, don't cry. Are you hungry?"Dad and Mom immediately rushed to Bella's side.Dad scooped her into his arms, holding her tight and trying desperately to soothe her.As he rocked her, he looked around the room in frustration and muttered angrily under his breath, "That brother of yours is nowhere to be found when we actually need him! He can't even help watch you. All he does is play outside. He really has zero sense of responsibility!"I froze, feeling as if an invisible hand was squeezing my heart so hard I couldn't breathe."Dad, I'm right here in the house, right in front of you! I'm not playing outside!"I reached out and tried to tug at Mom's sleeve, hoping she would look out the window and notice my body. But my hand passed through her body again and again, leaving behind nothing but a faint, unnoticeable chill.Bella kept wailing in Dad's arms. Her little finger pointed right at me as she babbled in sheer terror.Mom and Dad, however, just ass
