Five

When Emma walked inside the apartment she frowned and sighed heavily. She found Mila asleep on the couch, her head resting on its arm. She picked her phone from her purse and checked the messages; the last message Mila sent was around five in the morning and it was eight by the time she arrived.

Emma walked towards Mila and gently shook her body. The tired sleepy girl opened her eyes slowly. On seeing Emma in front of her, Mila quickly jumped up from her position.

“I’m so sorry! I was so drunk last night to message you and I only checked the messages this morning,” Emma said, worry was obvious in her voice. She felt guilty for making Mila that anxious.

“Drunk? Since when do you like drinking?” Mila’s confusion was written all over her face. She knew quite well that Emma did not like drinking; not one bit.

“I just wanted to try something new, it didn’t taste that bad,” Emma shrugged.

Just one night out and it was enough to make Emma change her mind about something she had always despised ever since she knew what drinking was. “It’s fine...I was just worried about you, good thing you’re okay. I’m going to sleep, I barely slept last night,” Mila mumbled tiredly. She did not want to appear so uptight and prevent Emma from doing anything or try something different, she knew that she had no right to prevent her and a one-time thing could never turn into an addiction.

“Are you mad at me? I’m really sorry.”

“Chill, Emma, I’m not mad at you,” Mila told her.

“You look like you are.” Emma frowned. Mila sighed and pulled Emma into a hug; hugs were always the thing that comforted Emma whenever she was nervous.

“I was just worried, I promise. I’m glad you’re okay.” Mila assured her best friend, making Emma sigh in relief and hug her back.

“I wish you were at the party, it was amazing,” Emma said as she pulled away from the hug.

“It’s college, parties are endless. I’m sure I’m going to attend a lot of parties!” Mila grinned.

“Go to bed, you look like...you have been hit by a train.” Emma giggled.

“Says the girl with mascara stains on her face.” Mila teased her and walked to her room. Emma quickly went to look at her face in the mirror and gasped.

“I have been hit by a train too!” Emma squealed, making Mila laugh.

Emma was relieved that Mila was not mad at her. She was, in fact, astonished by her reaction. She expected Mila to yell and scream at her for not telling her where she was, but all that Mila cared about was Emma’s safety and happiness and when she made sure she was all good, she did not care about her almost sleepless night or the worrying state she was in.

Emma heard her phone ring with a notification so she checked it; it was a message from Ariana.

‘Did the scary mama kill you?’ Emma did not like how Ariana was making fun of Mila.

‘Don’t call her that! She didn’t do anything actually.’

‘Chill! I was joking.’

‘She was just worried about me, she didn’t even scold me for keeping her up.’

‘That’s good, I need to go get my beauty sleep.’

‘Me too! I’m dead tired! Sweet dreams’

Emma went to her room and took a shower in the bathroom that was attached to her room. Once she was done she quickly dried herself and changed then went straight to bed.

Around noon, Emma was awakened by somebody shaking her. She opened her eyes and saw Mila lying down beside her.

“How long have you been here?” Emma asked her sleepily.

“Just for five minutes. I want to go shopping,” Mila told her.

“I want to buy a few things too.” Emma yawned as she stretched her arms.

“Should we get ready now?” Mila wondered, she was just as sleepy as Emma.

“Or maybe the next eternity,” Emma murmured and closed her eyes.

“Good point, let’s continue sleeping, shopping can wait,” Mila yawned, covering herself with Emma’s duvet and closed her eyes.

“Aren’t we friendship goals?” Emma laughed, making Mila giggle, and they both ended up falling asleep.

Three hours later, Emma woke up again and looked at Mila, only to find her still asleep.

“Mila... wake up, we are not going to continue the rest of our lives sleeping.” she woke her up.

“Why can’t we do that? Sleeping is awesome,” Mila whispered in a sleepy voice.

“Because we both want to go shopping,” Emma said as a matter of fact and sat up. “I want you to meet Ariana.”

“I don’t mind.” Mila sat up too and stretched her arms.

“Let's get ready, we can eat out,” Emma said and got out of bed.

Mila went to her room to get ready, she took a quick shower then blow-dried her hair and put on some jeans and a tank top along with black sandals. She threw her hair into a messy bun and applied some light make-up then went to the living room.

“Ready?” Emma asked her. Mila nodded and they both left the apartment.

“My car or yours?” Emma questioned.

“Mine, you’ve been using yours a lot,” Mila told her. The whole ride to the mall was fun. It was filled with singing and laughing which was something usual when both of them were in a good mood.

“What do you want to buy?” Mila asked Emma as she parked the car and both of them walked inside the mall.

“Eyeliner, highlighter, body lotion, body splash, nude colour lipstick and some new jeans,” Emma responded.

“Are you planning on wasting all of your pocket money today?” Mila laughed.

“No, I’ve barely bought anything with last month’s pocket money and I’ve been saving for a while,” Emma told her and she nodded. Emma might be wealthy, but she did not like spending all of her money on meaningless stuff. Although her parents never asked her to do that, she felt that there was no point in being a spendthrift.

“I need to buy mascara, three or four tops and maybe a skirt if I found something suitable,” Mila said as they walked to the food court first.

“I’m going to get Asian food,” Emma informed Mila.

“Count me in, I’m going to look for a table while you get the food,” Mila said and went to search for a table in the crowded food court.
