The weekend came faster than expected and soon enough it was Friday. Emma was in her room getting ready. She was nervous and excited at the same time. She has gone to parties before, but she has never gone to a party without Mila.
Emma put on a floral high-waisted skirt and styled it with a tight off-the-shoulder powder pink top. Her outfit was not showy, it was cute and nice. She applied some light make-up and put on pink lipstick that matched her outfit.
Ariana told Emma that she would pick her up. By 8:30 Ariana messaged Emma and told her that she was waiting for her.
“You live in a very nice neighbourhood, how do you manage to pay the rent girl?” Ariana asked Emma as she drove off to the party.“It’s not rented...my parents bought it for me,” Emma said quietly. She was not fond of telling people that the place was actually hers, but she did not see any point of lying and denying the truth.
“Oh wow! You’re rich! Lucky you.” Ariana grinned and played some music.
“You can say that.” Emma shrugged, not caring about being rich or not.
“So where are you originally from?” Ariana wondered.
“New Jersey, what about you?”
“Ohio.”
The two girls kept chatting till they reached the frat house where the party was held. Emma looked excited, wanting to try something new. Both of them could hear the loud sound of the music blasting from the inside. Emma and Ariana walked inside and were instantly met with sweaty bodies and red cups everywhere.
“This party is huge!” Emma told Ariana loudly, so she could hear her over the sound of the music.
“Oh honey, trust me this party is average.” Ariana chuckled as she took Emma to the kitchen. “Get yourself a drink.”
Emma looked around the kitchen then opened the fridge, she was about to get herself a can of Pepsi but Ariana stopped her.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Ariana asked her.
“Uhhh...getting a drink?” Emma said in a questioning tone.
“This is not elementary school, Emmy! Get yourself an alcoholic drink!” Ariana exclaimed. Emma was never a fan of drinking and she has always avoided drinking on any occasion. Ever since her older brother had an alcohol addiction she tried her best to avoid drinking, fearing that she might turn out like him.
“I don’t really like drinking,” Emma told her.
“Tonight is for trying new things. Here, take this,” Ariana said and gave Emma a red cup. Emma stared at the red cup in her hands for a couple of seconds, frowning.
“Come on Emmy, do it!” Ariana encouraged her. Emma sighed and took a sip of the drink. She cringed a bit because of how sour it was, making Ariana laugh.
“You’ll get used to it,” Ariana told her, then took her to the dance floor.
“Loosen up freshman!” Ariana shouted over the loud music. Emma was still a bit scared and taken aback by her new surroundings. She wanted to call Mila to pick her up, but she did not want to annoy her. Emma felt that she was an outcast, she did not belong to that place and partying was never and will never be her thing; at least not without her best friend.
However, she decided to do her best and mingle with the new world she was introduced to.Emma started to dance, swaying her body to the rhythm of the music. She finished the cup in her hand after thirty minutes and she could already feel the alcohol kicking in her system, making her a bit more comfortable with the party atmosphere.
“Take that!” Ariana gave her another drink and Emma found herself accepting the drink although she knew quite well that it was an alcoholic one.“See! You are actually having fun!” Ariana grinned. “Come on, let me introduce you to some of my friends.
Ariana took Emma to the backyard where some people were in the pool and others were playing beer pong. Emma was a lot less nervous than how she originally was when she first stepped her foot in the frat house.“My friends are the ones playing beer pong,” Ariana told her as they both walked to them.
“Hey, guys!” Ariana said, cheerfully.
“Ari, Hey! Who is your new friend?” a guy asked Ariana.
“This is Emma, Emma this is Colton.” Ariana introduced them to each other.
“Hey Emma, you can call me Cole. Have you played beer bong before?” he asked her and she shook her head. Colton was a tall and tanned guy. He had dark brown hair and blue eyes. He was the definition of ‘hot’ with his muscled body to almost every girl and Emma couldn’t help but admire his handsome figure.
“Let me show you how to play,” he told her and started to explain everything to her.
“That’s easy I guess.” Emma shrugged and took the small ball from another girl.
“Too much confidence, Emmy.” Ariana chuckled and watched Emma throw the ball. The ball fell into one of the cups and Emma earned a few cheers from the group.
“Damn girl! You’re a natural,” a guy named Will said in astonishment. Emma blushed a little, still not used to the attention she was receiving from the people around her.
By the end of the game, Emma was the winner and soon enough she was talking and laughing with everyone. She was very happy and loved the new experience she got to live for the night.
By 1 AM, Emma and Ariana were both too tired to even stand up. Ariana took Emma to one of the empty rooms, so they could sleep there, she also locked the door, so nobody would enter the room while they were asleep.
Once Emma saw the bed, she stumbled over till she reached it and quickly threw herself on it, falling into a deep sleep.
Emma woke up the next morning by the sunlight that entered through the window since the curtains were wide open. Her head was pounding and she could tell that her hair was a mess just by touching it. When she opened her eyes, she looked around the room and tried to acknowledge the unfamiliar surroundings. Suddenly, she jolted up from bed but ended up winning because of the strong headache since she had a hangover. She quickly reached for her phone and opened her new texts. She had more than twenty texts from Mila. Emma did not tell her that she was going to stay the night, so Mila was going out of her mind.‘Are you having fun?’
‘Em, you okay?’
‘Emma it’s 2 in the morning answer me!’
‘Emma are you okay?’
‘Want me to pick you up?’
‘Where are you!!!!?’
‘I’m worried sick here!’
Emma read some of the messages and quickly replied to them, apologizing for worrying her and not telling her that she was going to stay the night.
“Ari, Ari,... wake up, please! I need you to take me back home, please” Emma said as she shook Ariana up to wake her. Ariana groaned and opened her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” She croaked.
“Mila is worried sick! I need to get home. She is going to kill me,” Emma said quickly.
“She is your best friend, not your mother,” Ariana mumbled, rolling her eyes as she sat up in bed.
“No, you don’t understand. She is really protective of me.” Emma tried to explain, making Ariana scoff.
“She is so controlling over you, this is unhealthy.” Ariana shrugged and got up. “Anyway, let’s go.”
During the whole ride back home Emma kept thinking about what Ariana told her. Was Mila too controlling? Did she allow her to interfere in her life more than she should? Emma quickly brushed those thoughts away, knowing that nobody knew the kind of friendship they had except for the two of them.
When Emma walked inside the apartment she frowned and sighed heavily. She found Mila asleep on the couch, her head resting on its arm. She picked her phone from her purse and checked the messages; the last message Mila sent was around five in the morning and it was eight by the time she arrived.Emma walked towards Mila and gently shook her body. The tired sleepy girl opened her eyes slowly. On seeing Emma in front of her, Mila quickly jumped up from her position.“I’m so sorry! I was so drunk last night to message you and I only checked the messages this morning,” Emma said, worry was obvious in her voice. She felt guilty for making Mila that anxious.“Drunk? Since when do you like drinking?” Mila’s confusion was written all over her face. She knew quite well that Emma did not like drinking; not one bit.“I just wanted to try something new, it didn’t taste that bad,” Emma shrugged.Just one
It was Sunday and it was a lazy day for both of Mila and Emma. Mila finished all of her college assignments on Friday and Emma finished everything she was supposed to do on her weekdays since she had nothing else to do."Julie is coming over," Mila informed Emma as she drank her coffee."And Ariana too," Emma told Mila, checking her Instagram out of pure boredom."Great." Mila smiled and sat on the couch beside her.Mila was texting Julie a lot and she had a lot of classes with her. Julie was a nice girl and she was a lot like Mila, so she was comfortable with her and she did not feel pressured with the friendship she developed with her.Emma was also building a growing friendship with Ariana and she liked the friendship they were having. She loved how Ariana was making her experience new things. Mila was a little uncertain about Emma's friendship with Ariana and was concerned about how Ariana was pulling Emma into a whole new life, yet she kept he
"I honestly don't like her at all," Julie spoke as she sat beside Mila. The professor had not come yet to the lecture, so the girls used the opportunity to chitchat."Same, I don't know what Emma sees in her, this troubles me." Mila sighed, opening her notebook and writing the date."Are you still going to the party?" Julie asked her."Only to keep my eyes on Emma.""I don't know if I should come or not." Julie thought out loud."Come, I don't want to be alone at that party, I know Emma would be busy with her new friends.""I will think about it," Julie told Mila, earning a nod from her."I want you to meet Leila and Hannah. We share a flat together," Julie said with a smile on her face."Sounds good to me. I have a shift today from 4 to 10, if they are free after we finish our lectures today then we can meet," Mila suggested."Sounds like a plan," Julie agreed. After two lectures, Julie and Mila went to meet the
"Are you sure you want to come? You know I will be fine on my own," Emma told Mila, giving her a skeptical look. "Did Ariana tell you not to bring me? Too bad for her if she did because I'm going," Mila said the first part teasingly; however, she was serious about the second part. She did not want to leave Emma alone at that party; she had a bad feeling about it."She did not say anything else, we haven't really talked about you." Emma shrugged as she applied some lipstick. Emma was lying, Ariana would always make fun of Mila."Julie is coming, so I will most probably be with her all the time, and I'm sure you'll be with Cole, Ariana, and your new friends," Mila said, applying more mascara."That's not true." Emma frowned as her stomach twisted in guilt. "We will spend time together.""And even if we don't, it's okay. You're supposed to have new friends, I'm just worried about the kind of people you hang out with," Mila spoke. Ever since they starte
The next morning, Emma woke up around noon with a killer headache. She winced as she got out of bed. She walked slowly to the bathroom and took a hot shower, hoping it would ease her headache and relax her exhausted body.Once she was done she dried herself and put on clean clothes then went back to her room. Emma could not remember anything at all from the night before and that was annoying her. The more she pushed herself to remember, the more the pounding in her head intensified. When she was done brushing her hair and applying deodorant and body lotion she walked out of her room."Mil," she called out as she walked to the kitchen. Emma was a little surprised when she found Julie in front of her instead of Mila. She did not recall Julie staying the night with them, but she also failed to recall any other event."Good morning Julie, where is Mila?" she asked her, opening the fridge."Morning, I bet you have a strong headache, here." Julie handed her Ibupr
"Is this Emma? We've heard a lot about you," Leila hollered, gaining the attention of everyone around them. Leila, Julie, and Hannah were at the restaurant, sitting in a booth and they were soon joined by Emma and Mila."My death wish would probably be to see you quiet for an hour." Julie rolled her eyes at Leila."Hey," Emma said, smiling at the three girls in front of her then sat down and so did Mila."You already know Julie, I'm Leila and this is Hannah," Leila introduced herself and Hannah."You really look like princess Merida," Emma told Leila."I know, right? I've been told that a lot! Even Mila told me that the first time she saw me.""You two made up?" Julie whispered to Mila while Emma was engaging with the other two girls."We haven't talked about it yet... I honestly don't want to talk about it. I think I might ignore the whole thing," Mila told Julie quietly.Mila took a glance at Emma and saw her talking to Hannah
More than three weeks passed and Emma and Mila were slowly drifting apart. Mila noticed how their friendship was falling apart and she did not know if she should do anything or not. She tried to fix what had been unintentionally broken between her and her best friend— who did not realize how everything was going downhill between them —but all her tries went in vain.Emma was too caught up in partying, drinking, and even smoking to pay attention to anything else. She did not pay attention to her studies the way she was supposed to. She was falling into a deep hole and refused help from anyone. Mila tried to pull her away from that dark life she was getting herself into, but she always ended up pushing Mila away. Each girl decided to focus on her new life and everything they used to do together was kind of forgotten. How ironic? Emma was scared that Mila might forget about her and get busy with her new life and new friends, yet she was the one who forgot her
"I'm so excited and happy and nervous and overwhelmed! Oh god! I can't believe I agreed!" Mila exclaimed as she paced back and forth. She was at Leila, Hannah and Julie's place. The three girls, who were sitting right in front of her on the couch, looked at each other for a second before bursting out in laughter."Don't laugh at me," she whined as she threw herself on the chair placed beside the couch."Sorry, I just...I have never imagined seeing you like that," Julie laughed, making Mila glare at her."What do I even wear!?" Mila wondered."Just ask him," Hannah shrugged, looking at Mila."Okay," Mila nodded and texted Blake, who replied after five minutes."Something comfortable, yet nice." Mila read the message then looked at the girls."That's not something hard to find in any girl's wardrobe," Leila said and the others agreed with her."When you start getting ready tomorrow send us pictures of your outfits and we will help
