Lyra's POV

I am at the verge of breaking down but I swallowed hard trying to maintain a calm composure. “Why the hell am I kept here against my will for freaking five hours? Without a word from anyone!” my hands clenched into a fist and my knuckles turned white.

“Mr Sawyer, we have the murderer in our custody now. What's the next step, Sir?” My heart suddenly felt like a hammer beating in my chest when those words rang in my ears.

I struggled to grasp for air and my skin prickled with fear.

What? Is that this scumbag's plan? After all the tribulations and pain he has made me go through, now this? He will definitely regret pulling this up with me this time around!

“Get me out of here now!” I yelled and banged the door loudly with much force just to create a scene.

“Better be calm or you will be forced to be!” One of the officers warned.

“Do your worst!” I said, confidently. I pitched my lips together and drew a loud breath as I ran my hand through my long hair.

Why am I shouting at this moment? I don't think I will leave here anymore, obviously not.

A few months ago, when Caleb's irresponsible behaviour got worse, even though he had never regarded our wedding vows. Why will he? When everyone in the whole of London perceived him as the richest and hottest bachelor. Our marriage has always been a secret.

On the day of our wedding anniversary, he never showed up, no texts, no call whatsoever. Yes, that has always been his attitude and I was getting used to it but last year's own seemed different.

Little did I know that was the saddest day of his life.

As usual, he returned the next morning, looking devastated, broken and soaked in alcohol.

But, the words he slurred during this time, made my heart skip rapidly.

“My mother can't go to jail. Never!” Those were some of his words. My mind couldn't shift from those words until it started making sense a few days later.

He made me believe that his mother had no hand in the accusations, and that made me do the unthinkable. And the most pathetic part was that, I never knew it was also a murder case just like the one I was accused of years ago.

Mrs Sawyer is the centre of Caleb's life. I had always known that. He will do everything in the world to make sure she's okay and anything that tampers with her automatically ruins him beyond recognition.

Unexpectedly, I didn't know his love for her was this deep until he stated to me, “I would have gone to jail for my mother if I was a lady,” it wasn't just the words, but it's sincerity was everything .

As my eyes remained fixed on him, I replied, at first I thought I was going insane but I really meant my words. “I will fulfil your wish, I mean I will go to jail in place of your mother since it's just an accusation, I will be vindicated soon I guess?” And now, that's what he's trying to use against me.

I should have known that he's nothing but an asshole, not worthy of my love, nor sacrifice. And his mother, I blinked my gaze on the officer, she will take her rightful place here soonest. Trust me!

I grit my teeth and my stomach churn as memories flooded my mind.

I have no doubts that that scumbag will do anything it takes to make his mother escape this.

I was beaten back to reality when confusion and surprise flit through me, making my body tense.

Anger, frustration and pain enveloped me. It was as if the ground should open up and swallow me. And the fueling rage bubbling in me increased.

How dare he show his disgustful face here after all he has caused me?! For a moment, my gaze travelled on his lips, and a sharp pang of longing rushes over me.

Caleb is devilishly handsome, in fact every contour of his face is so perfect.

As I drifted my gaze, my stomach sank when it settled on him and there was no kindness in his eyes. How can a beast be kind whatsoever?

“Lyra!” There's a way he calls my name that sends cold chills down my spine.

My mind is whirling in anger and bitterness as I stood in front of him with the bar in-between us. Frustration tugs me, and I felt like strangling him with my bare hands.

“How dare you, Caleb! You and your family did me dirty! And my baby…,” I thought I had gathered enough strength but tears streamed down my face just immediately.

He cleared his throat, the iciness in his eyes pierced through me. No empathy, no remorse and unapologetic.

“Your baby?” Then he broke into a brief laugh. “That bastard? He doesn't deserve to see this world. You shameless whore!”

At that point, the only thing stopping me from landing a dirty slap on this shithead’s face is the metallic bar separating us. “What! You had a hand in my miscarriage too? How dare you!” My voice came out like a whisper and my chest tightened.

“Your blood is what you referred to as a bastard, Caleb? Not just that, you're not bothered it's gone, huh? You're a beast!” I wiped my tears with the back of my hand.

I sniffed my nose, and I looked deep into his eyes. “You will leave to regret this, Caleb. You think you have succeeded in putting me behind bars for the crime of your useless mother, huh? You're a daydreamer!” I exclaimed, a tinge of confidence exuded in me instantly as I tried to fight back my tears.

“You're spilling crap, Lyra!” he yelled.

“You have already agreed to take my mother's place as the culprit, you can't go back on those words!”

For a moment, I felt like the universe was against me, for letting this bastard treat me like trash. “What do you have to say for yourself, Lyra? I have all evidence intact and you know I will do everything to make sure my mother is free.”

I tried to fight back my tears as I held the metallic bar firmly. My hands clenched into a fist and the burning sensation in my heart intensified.

“We shall see!” He dropped his last words, and strolled out without turning back

A few minutes later, as I was swimming in my thoughts, a loud voice echoed in my ears.“Where's the lady you arrested a while ago!”

“Where the hell is she!” The person added, this time around louder.

Lyra's POV “What!” I screamed, and my ears were as though I was just dreaming about his words as they seemed too scary to be true.“I understand that look, and it's hard to even believe it, and as it stands now, even though I need a presenter, he doesn't know I'm out of prison and doesn't watch the news. That's one thing about him that I'm so much aware of,” he managed to say and I still stared at him wordless. Then I tiptoed back to my seat and my eyes couldn't leave his face. It was as though I was anxiously searching his face to figure out his thoughts, which was obviously impossible. The moment I landed on my chair, he reached for my hand and murmured some words on his lips as we stared at each other without a word for a while.“I understand how badly you feel and so shattered down to earth. How the people you love most turn out to be more than enemies, and the only thing they can think of as a payment for your sacrifices towards them is pain, hurt and betrayal!”“It's so heartbr

Lyra's POV My eyes widened in astonishment, and I was amazed at the thrill his words gave me. I raised my eyelids, and my eyes met his glaring ones as the shock ran through me.“Yeah, I know you're confused, Lyra, but I'm the same person you knew back in the prison house,” he spoke as he nodded his head.“Really?!” I covered my mouth as I was barely able to control my grasp of surprise. As I voiced that, he nodded his head and stretched his hand towards my tensed ones, which were lying on my desk.“I don't know my real name, and I guess that caused the confusion, right? You don't have to worry about anything, Lyra, I'm with you on this mission, and there's nothing for you to be bothered about,” he revealed.“I know it has been hard for you all this while, and take my word if I tell you that you will get the justice you deserve,” he continued, and my eyes swept all over him.I cleared his throat, and he loosened his tie a bit as I relaxed on the swivel chair. “A lot is going through y

I stood there, blank and shaken.I parted my lips, but my voice broke miserably, and I was too surprised to accept his handshake. His hand remained in the air as he searched anxiously on my face as though he was trying to read what I had in mind.Is he really Tate Shark? Or am I hallucinating?I surveyed his face and the same fragments of images clouded my mind. There's nothing that seems to make me doubt what's going on in my mind.“You…you are? Tate Shark?” My voice cracked and I released my handbag to Sandra.“He was here for a while now ma'am,” she said as she stretched her hand for the bag.He nodded eagerly with a brief smile on his lips. “Yeah Miss Jenkins, it's a pleasure to be here,” his husky voice made my body tremble all of a sudden.I only stared speechless, as though I was deaf or dumb, and I couldn't help but wonder how this man who was released from prison was a news presenter.W

Lyra's POV Her eyes moved upwards to stare at my glaring ones and she surveyed me keenly. They were a pool of pity in them but behind that, the only thing I perceived was that evil old lady who stood against me in court years ago without a fucking care about anything.“I want to make it right now and stand by you through everything. I…,” she paused and stole a look at my red face.“I know I disappointed you Lyra. But I want to be the shoulder that you would lean on now on your hard days and the one that you will rejoice with on your happy days. I…,” she muttered under her breath and her voice was broken all of a sudden.I pulled the handbag from her cursed hands and my eyes flickered over her. “It's good you know that you disappointed me, and for your information, Mrs Jenkins. I don't know, you don't even deserve to be referred to as that.”“Guess what? It's too late for that now. A shoulder for me to lean on? Really?” I stood still as I tried to fight back the tears that had threate

Since you returned you have not asked about her and know why. But…”I dropped my handbag on the couch near her and I interrupted him vehemently. “Who the hell gave you that advice? Wait…oh God!” My voice cracked and I ran my hand through my long hair.“What even makes you think that I want to see this? This one? She's not my grandma anymore and will never be!” My voice was almost cold.I swallowed the lump that rose in my throat, and I stared at them with my eyes full of fury while she lowered her gaze to the floor. She picked up her support crutch, and tried to sit upright.
